Punk icons Dead Kennedys raise eyebrows as they commend Republican Senator Mitt Romney for his rebuke of Donald Trump amid chaos in the US capitol

  • The San Francisco-founded band is known for skewering both the left and the right with songs like Holiday In Cambodia, Kill The Poor and California Über Alles
  • Punk fans were surprised by the Dead Kennedys' celebration of Romney, who is a staunch conservative but also vocal critic of President Trump
  • The band also gave South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham credit for 'trying to do the right thing'
  • Washington DC became the center of tumult on Wednesday after the president held a rally where he continued to push unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud
  • The rally came while Congress met to certify President-elect Joe Biden's win in a joint session

Their politically-charged lyrics and brash sound made them punk icons.

But the Dead Kennedys proved even they could find middle ground as they celebrated Republican Senator Mitt Romney after a chaotic Wednesday in Washington DC.

The California Über Alles performers - who originally made a name for themselves with their snide left-wing commentary and provocative album artwork - commended the conservative Utah congressman after he denounced President Donald Trump for encouraging disorder at the nation's capital amid his unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud.

The San Francisco-founded band - which no longer includes famous frontman Jello Biafra - took to Twitter to celebrate the 2012 Republican presidential candidate, sharing a photo of the salt-and-pepper-tressed legislator and writing: 'Thank you @SenatorRomney.'

They also tagged Evan McMullin, a former CIA operations officer and 2016 independent presidential candidate who has been a vocal critic of Trump throughout his tenure as POTUS.

'Mitt cares about the the USA,' the tweet went on.

Though by no means a progressive darling, having voted with Trump 78.8% of the time in the past two years according to FiveThirtyEight - the devoutly Mormon politician has earned minor cachet from some liberals for marking himself as one of the only prominent Republicans willing to condemn President Trump.

And he made history in January 2019 after he became the first and only senator in US history to vote to impeach the leader of their own party.

But few punk fans were impressed by DK's gesture of across-the-aisle solidarity, with many taking to the thread to roast the Holiday In Cambodia band, which was founded in 1978.

'Sucks. bad. bad post that sucks,' wrote one fan. 'lol you can remove "legendary US punk band" from the bio now,' quipped another.

Referencing one of the Dead Kennedy's most famous songs, the Inside Out band added: 'i guess kill the poor wasnt satirical.'

Former lead singer Jello Biafra even tweeted about it, making it clear he had nothing to do with the tone-deaf message.

'As if today couldn't get any weirder, look who posted this!! How dumb and clueless can you get?? Was it scab singer Skip, who recently denied DK's are a political band, just, "a social satire band"?? Ea$t Bay Ray?? It sure as hell wasn't me... - Jello'
