Day of the Dumpster

Revisiting Power Rangers compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking visual differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Rita’s planetoid rises behind the Moon. A space shuttle flies toward a celestial object. Astronauts walk on the surface of the celestial object, with landed space shuttle, Earth & Moon behind them.

Original: Celestial object is Rita’s planetoid.

Reversion: Initial shot of Rita’s planetoid is completely cut. Celestial object is the Moon. Background of shot of space shuttle flying is now filled with stars. Shots of astronauts walking on Moon’s surface is darkened, with stars added to the sky. Space shuttle flying shot starts later and astronauts walking shot ends earlier.

Squatt, with hands over mouth, turns to look up toward Rita, then fumbles in satchel as Baboo walks up and smacks him on the head.

With her minions standing behind her and the astronauts still visible in the distance, Rita uses her wand to blast and destroy the space dumpster, causing the monsters to briefly cheer.

Reversion: Additional commercial break inserted - as Jason nods, scene freezes and he is cut-out of background, which features vector art of various landscape items as three static bird shapes fly behind him. Remainder of scene is cut. Camera fades to black in and out of commercial break.

Reversion: Saturation of sky is increased, creating a slight halo effect around the Command Center.

As they stand in the Youth Center during the earthquake, each of the five teens is enveloped in teleportation energy and teleported away.

Reversion: A bright wisp of light quickly flows between the teens from left-to-right. Trini appears enveloped in teleportation energy earlier than the others.

Goldar responds to Rita (off-screen). An open torch with flame in a cave. Rita motions wand and fires blast from wand at camera, near statue and flaming torch.

Reversion: Middle scene is completely cut from the reversion, along with last frame of first scene and first frame of last scene.

Three Putties flip onto the scene.

Reversion: Scene is darkened.

Close on Kimberly as she sidesteps into view, looking to sides. Cut to panning left-and-right shot of two Putties approaching. Medium on Kimberly as a Putty does a backflip off a rock behind her and then proceeds to grab her arm, causing her to scream as the scene slows. Camera fades to black in to commercial break.

Reversion: Shot of backflipping Putty is pushed back behind a replay of the previous two scenes played again and is cut mid-backflip (before Putty grabs Kimberly’s arm and she screams). Scene freezes as Kimberly is replaced with a shot of the Pink Ranger mid-pose, cut-out from the background amidst expanding pink-and-white waves. Underlay appears in upper center of screen, showing Kimberly doing a forward flip on the balance beam in the Youth Center. Underlay appears in lower left of screen, showing Kimberly doing a backflip while restrained and then kicking a Putty in the rear. Underlay appears in lower right of screen, showing the Pink Ranger battling Putties on a rooftop and then kicking forward. Pink-and-white waves emit from center again as scene fades to black for commercial.

Kimberly, with arms restrained by two Putties, kicks a third Putty in the rear, causing him to fall forward, and then kicks one of the restraining Putties in the side.

Reversion: As Kimberly connects with the first Putty, a comic-style “OOF!” in pink lettering grows and then shrinks in the middle of the screen.

While surrounded by three Putties, Zack performs some Hip Hopkido, extending a fist to his right before following up with a kick to the abdomen of a Putty.

Reversion: As Zack extends his fist, a comic-style “Snap!” in black lettering in a black starburst grows and then shrinks in the middle of the screen, disappearing before the kick connects.

Billy bumps chests with a Putty to his right, then staggers backward and bumps back-first into a Putty to his left, then rights himself and ducks down as both Putties try to grab him but end up embracing.

Reversion: As Billy bumps chests with the Putty, a comic-style “BONK!” in blue lettering in a yellow starburst grows and then shrinks in the middle of the screen.

A stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle once it hits its final destination.

The Rangers stand upon the roof of a building, and strike their signature one-stage poses.

Reversion: Gray cloud appears in sky above Rangers. Scene freezes as background is removed and white beams of light radiate from the ground behind them. Ground itself also has pink and black stylized textures.

Goldar lands on the rooftop as camera zooms out. Putties appear and lunge forth.

Reversion: Lightning bolt strikes rooftop and rain beings to fall just before Goldar lands. Heavy storm clouds and orb (Moon?) appear in the sky, partially obscuring Goldar’s sword in some frames as he swings it about. Some frames are removed, resulting in the end being cut and the scene appearing partially in slow-motion.

Bladehand Putty strikes screen.

Reversion: This scene is completely cut from the reversion.

Red Ranger poses, two-stage, Zord-summoning style.

Reversion: Upon completing pose, scene freezes with Red Ranger cut-out from background. Red-and-black pinwheel-overlay with obscured, right-facing Q-Rex appearing in background as camera zooms in slightly on Ranger. Runs 30 frames longer at end.

Black Ranger poses, two-stage, Zord-summoning style.

Reversion: After first stage of pose, scene freezes with Black Ranger cut-out from background. Spinning black-and-blue pinwheel-overlay with white dotted texture appears in background as camera zooms in slightly on Ranger. Runs 31 frames longer due to cut-out.

Blue Ranger poses, two-stage, Zord-summoning style.

Reversion: Upon completing pose, scene freezes with Blue Ranger cut-out from background. Spinning blue-and-black pinwheel-overlay appears in background as camera zooms in slightly on Ranger and two blue star shapes shoot toward upper corners from center. Runs 31 frames longer at end.

Yellow Ranger poses, two-stage, Zord-summoning style.

Reversion: Upon completing pose, scene freezes with Yellow Ranger cut-out from background. Slight yellow starburst pattern with red dotted texture appears in background as four darker yellow arrows shoot toward upper right from lower left. White arrow shoots clockwise around Ranger from behind head to front right side. Runs 30 frames longer at end.

Pink Ranger poses, two-stage, Zord-summoning style.

Reversion: Upon completing pose, scene freezes with Pink Ranger cut-out from background. Large red heart appears behind Ranger as two smaller pink hearts shoot out to either side in front of dark pink, heart-textured background. Runs 30 frames longer at end.

Giant Goldar raises sword.

Original: First frame is a blended frame of the first frame of this shot and the last frame of the previous shot from Zyuranger, featuring the unused Battle Bikes.

Reversion: First frame is a duplicate of the second frame, remedying the Battle Bikes issue. Saturation of sky is increased (except in first frame), creating a halo-effect around Goldar.

Tyrannosaurus Dinozord’s head rises from fiery pit. Tyrannosaurus Dinozord rises straight up amid flames and smoke.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Red Ranger Tyrannosaurus!”. Begins one frame later and ends four frames earlier.

Mastodon Dinozord surfaces from its icy domain. Mastodon Dinozord exhales its icy breath. Close on Mastodon Dinozord’s feet as it begins to walk. Mastodon Dinozord stomps along the snowy surface.

Mastodon Dinozord connects with Tyrannosaurus Dinozord, causing a pulse of energy throughout. Close-on Triceratops Dinozord’s wheels passing through the desert sands. Megazord Tank Mode rumbles forth.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Megazord Tank Mode!”.

Teens react to Kimberly’s joke as Alpha 5 begins smoking and convulsing. Medium on Alpha continuing to react. Back to all teens as Kimberly walks over to Alpha, apologizing for the joke, joining Jason in trying to wave away smoke. Alpha ceases convulsing, grabs head, then tilts head. Long shot on Rangers reassured at Alpha’s recovery. Close on Jason’s extended fist as other Rangers pile on hands.

Reversion: End credits run over bottom half of frame during final scenes of the episode, rather than the :30 second outro.

Long shot of teens standing in a circle with hands extended toward center, stacked, with Alpha 5 looking on. They push their hands down, and then upward while jumping up and shouting “Power Rangers!” Freeze frame. Fade to black.
