This exquisite photography exhibit juxtaposes vintage cameras and photographs from the late 1880s by unknown photographers with contemporary work created in 2020s by Leverett photographer James Gehrt.

At its core, our artistic practice is an act of total submission to the collective and individual subconscious. By subverting intellect and intent we create pieces which, upon completion, are baffling even to ourselves. This action tears us apart and bares all from the Sublime, Divine, and Beautiful, to the ignorant, Dark, and shameful. Each piece serves as a visual language for that which cannot be otherwise described, implying varying degrees of narrative, allegory, or personal theology.

Their artistic approach is so different, yet they are so much alike. The Elusie Gallery has brought them together for this unique exhibit.

Her combinations of painting, printmaking and words move us along a journey to explore our own feelings and journeys. Doris was deeply influenced by the words of Refaat Alareer, Palestinian poet, killed Dec. 6, 2023; "If I must die, you must live, to tell my story...If I must die, let it bring hope, let it be a tale."

Drawing from the work of Alice Neel and Frida Kahlo in particular, these explorations of portraiture in oil investigate acts of witnessing and representation. Neel and Kahlo's work resonates for their use of observation, expressiveness, and sensitivity to color. In this ongoing portrait series, I am similarly more interested in capturing a person's presence than in realism. Temperature, light, and gesture are all concerns here. Also: the temporary, the fleeting, the ephemeral.

Their bodies are a lot like ours, and their range of emotions so relatable. I am expressing my own feelings as much as theirs (chimpanzees). My still lifes are painted on copper which is cut to shape. In eliminating the frame, the window which separates the painted image from the "real" world, the paintings themselves become less a view into space than something more like an object in its own right. I do not have any literal narrative underlying the compositions but think of the still lifes simply as collections in which, I hope, the juxtaposition of objects might suggest interrelationships that are evocative in some manner.

It seems each day we are feeling our equilibrium askew with a continuing barrage from outside sources that affect much more than we ever imagined. My way of responding is to find a way to try and live my life to its fullest and appreciate how beautiful it can be by doing my art. Nature and what it brings to our daily lives is the ultimate healer. These monotype, dry points, intaglio etchings, a few oils and watercolors center on this experience and hopefully bring a sense of stillness and quietude to the viewer.

Painting the Persianate World introduces a view of cultures in flux through migration and contact. The movement of people from regions that comprise today's Iran and Afghanistan to present-day Pakistan, India and Bangladesh--and with them the Persian language-- formed what has come to be known as the Persianate world. Manuscript illustrations, dye-painted textiles, and decorated ceramics played an important role in binding these regions together.

Abstract art is like breaking the rules of traditional art--it doesn't try to show things as they are in real life. Instead, it uses colors, shapes, and lines in wild and creative ways to express feelings or ideas, often leaving interpretation open to the viewer. It's a celebration of artistic freedom and imagination. Show us /'ab,strak(t)/ from your perspective.
