Mr. Door

Question

If Tim Breaker is supposed to be another version of Jack Joyce then isn’t Warlin Door supposed to be another version of Martian Hatch?

I wonder why they casted David Harewood and didn’t get Lance Reddick back. R.I.P. Lance Reddick, but he was still alive to film for AW2 when they were making it. I do think David Harewood is perfect for the role regardless I just miss Lance Reddick in general. I guess he might’ve been held up filming for John Wick 4 at the time AW2 would’ve needed him.

You're correct but they are IP limited by Microsoft and can't use Quantum Break beyond allusions to it

u/RogueShadowUnit avatar

Yeah, unfortunately. But I was more wondering was Lance Reddick didn’t take the Mr. Door role.

He sadly passed away in 2023.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lance_Reddick

From what I understand they filmed all of the live action sections of Alan Wake 2 right at the end of production.

u/RogueShadowUnit avatar

Yes, I’m sadly quite aware he passed.

But I did not know they filmed most everything towards the end of production. But I thought they started Alan Wake 2 in 2020 or 2021.

They did but from what I recall from some interviews they had a lot of slow downs due to COVID. It also appears that they did changed the story a fair bit as they were working through so I suppose it makes sense to keep the live action stuff as late as possible as it had to have been expensive, and getting everyone back to record things again would have been hard.

Lance Reddick is mentioned in the credits of Alan Wake 2 and it was confirmed in interviews that he was the original cast for Mr Door and that David Harewood was brought in very last minute to fill in.

And he nailed it.

u/RogueShadowUnit avatar

Oh yeah he’s the perfect person for that role.

It pains me to say I’d give up David Harewood as Mr. Door if that means Lance Reddick was still with us. But I think having someone stay alive over a perfect casting pretty easily wins for most.

Oh shoot I didn’t know David Harewood was that of a last minute pickup. It kind of sucks because David Harewood is the perfect casting for that role and I’m so stoked he’s in Remedy projects now. But on the other hand I love Lance Reddick and I still wish he was here.

They shot the live action stuff late in development. Lance had passed by then.

u/RogueShadowUnit avatar

Wow I hadn’t realized they film all that stuff like what months or at least half a year before release.

u/AlaskanMedicineMan avatar

I'd say it's pretty standard but nothing about Remedy's process is standard, but what I can tell you is the story is often reworked at the end of development due to cutting room floor stuff or last minute changes driven by actors or gameplay, so it's wise to not put in a bunch of story work early only for it to get cut or changed

u/RogueShadowUnit avatar

Yeah that makes sense. I do remember reading some article that said Remedy’s game making process is very different from others. Something about they don’t make test model in low quality or something like that.

They did cast him, there’s a poster mockup in the game files of Lance as Door, they just didn’t have the chance to film his parts before he passed. He might not even be a variant of Hatch, he might just be Hatch.

He is a variant, he's just every variant at the same time. Maybe in some world he's Alan.

iirc in Quantum Break Hatch is revealedto be one of the creatures that exist simultaneously in all time and thrive in the End of Time. So maybe Hatch, existing forever in all of time, was brought to another universe by Alan and now exists simultaneously in every universe, all the time, and now is called Door

I think maybe the concept of timelines here is more broad and encompasses universes as well, and there was no point for Hatch to elaborate on his nature in that detail so he didn't.

I also think it may be more fluid - imagine it as an ever-shifting ocean, and normal people with their constrains can only see a fraction of it, so for example maybe it can be changed but there would be no way of knowing it as memory is also rewritten. Though "Rewritten" may not be the best word - more like swimming to a different part of that ocean

And all of it culminates in the idea that Alan can kinda write things into existence - by pulling elements of other timelines into his own, so they were always there. In the end it would appear no different from prophesy/clairvoyance

u/RogueShadowUnit avatar

I think that’s why Door/Hatch was messing with Tim Breaker because Tim either is some version of Jack Joyce after the end of time in Quantum Break or Tim is an alternate version and Door’s trying to lead him to “remember” what his variant did in QB.

Exactly. They also teased this with Breaker's whiteboard where he literally describes remembering a red haired woman. With the caveat being if he meant Betty or Jesse

Ohhh yeah I forgot about that place holder poster. And yeah, I didn’t realize they filmed all the live action stuff that late in the production process. Yeah, I think Door and Tim Breaker are supposed to be the same characters from Quantum Break. Well as same as Remedy can legally do right now.

Hopefully we’ll get Quantum Break 2 next decade or 2.

He is.

Only just realised Hatch=Door

u/RogueShadowUnit avatar

Ohh yeah, that’s 1 of the main things I noticed when playing Alan Wake 2. But I didn’t realize that the name Tim Breaker is 1 word off of being Time Breaker lol. And Breaker also playing into the title of Quantum Break.

Okay, but "Martian" Hatch is such a brilliant typo considering David Harewood played Martian Manhunter in Supergirl 😆

This was Hatch, if he had been born on Mars. /s

u/RogueShadowUnit avatar

Omg I didn’t even notice that typo haha. That actually is perfect, I won’t edit my post. Most people should get what I meant.

Also yeah Martian Manhunter is really the only other thing I’ve seen David Harewood in and I loved him in that. So I guess that made me excited to see him in Alan Wake 2.

No disrespect to Lance, but I'm glad they cast Harewood in the role. Lance was a great actor for a certain kind of character, but I think Harewood brought some real life to Door.

Both Lance and Harewood were excellent in their roles because you just know they hide a lot of stuff. Lance were excellent as Hatch because he was creepy and mysterious, in a way where you just knew he was the one pulling the strings.

Harewood as Door is excellent because behind his goofy and carefree attitude you know that he knows more about what's happening than even Alan, and his goofy attitude is just him being "alright, let's entertain this dude a little"

u/CageAndBale avatar

Imagine Lance would have had his own version of the dance scene and I'm sure it would have been glorious

u/badlybrave avatar

I kinda felt like it was so obvious the role was written with Lance in mind. It seemed so perfect for him, and when he first showed up I wasn't 100% that Harewood would be able to fill those shoes, mostly because of how unique of an actor Lance was.

Harewood completely proved me wrong though and blew it out of the water. I'd love to have seen the alternative, but I'm glad we got what we got. Can't picture anyone else now.

u/RogueShadowUnit avatar

Yeah, I remembered people saying they wanted David Harewood to play Martian Hatch in a Quantum Break 2 if that ever happens. And well I guess Remedy thought the same thing.

Insanely sad to not have Lance Reddick with us anymore. I just hope he knows David Harewood was able to match his special acting in his own way.

Oh yeah 100% David Harewood is perfect for the role and I loved him in it. But as I’ve said before I’d trade that if that meant Lance Reddick was still with us.

yes

David Harewood said in an interview that the role was gonna go for Lance Riddick before he sadly passed away.

The interview that I saw, he didn't mention the name. He specifically danced around the name and made it seem like he wasn't allowed to say it.

...But all evidence points to Lance being the original actor for the role.

u/RogueShadowUnit avatar

Oh, could you link me the interview please?

https://youtu.be/TdmFiF8kdxE?si=dEKGdJJfKIlrVpqe&t=714

The timestamp is at the relevant bit as he begins talking about him being cast for the role at last minute.

Fun detail is that he had been a huge fan of Remedy games and had played all the Max Payne games and Control. ...But not Alan Wake 1, because he didn't have the console it came out on.

u/RogueShadowUnit avatar

Thank you so much!😁

Ohhh that’s awesome! Does he talk about that in a different interview? And well if he didn’t play Alan Wake 1 is Alan Wake’s American Nightmare I take it he didn’t play Quantum Break either then. Kind of funny since Mr. Door is basically Martin Hatch.

And I’m ashamed to admit I still need to play the Max Payne trilogy so he’s got me beat there lol. I did buy them I just need to get around to playing them. So at least remedy has taken my money for them.

I just opened the link and ohhhh yeah that interview! I’ve been mean to watch it. I still have a tab open on it. I’ve only watch the Ilkka Villi interview but I saw he did 1 with Sam Lake and Mathew Porretta.
