The most cinematic sequence in Fincher’s Filmography

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) is my favorite David Fincher film. I’m not saying it’s his best, although that is my opinion, but it is my favorite.

I love this movie and Fincher’s interpretation of the source novel for many many reasons. However, this sequence really nicely demonstrates why I think it is somewhat unique within his catalog:

  1. Fincher isn’t afraid to be cinematic in his depiction of larger than life action

  2. Lisbeth Salanders growth/triumph over evil is very nicely reenforced with her confidence of facing Martin Vanger head on

  3. Previous to this sequence, we see Fincher do James Bond better than any Bond film before or after with the very actor who was currently occupying that role. This sequence extends that even further but we have a strong, wounded, triumphant female lead capping it off.

I’m sure I’m not the first person to point this out, nor praise this sequence. I also acknowledge this is all opinion and subject to debate/critique. Please do so in the comments if you have thoughts! I love this movie and this book series (only read the first three authored by Stieg Larsson) and I love Finchers interpretation so so much.

I wish he'd gotten to do the whole series.

I’m very much OK with the fact that he only did one. I’m not saying books 2 & 3 wouldn’t also have been awesome with Fincher directing…but outside of House of Cards and Mindhunter, it seems to me he likes to work on projects in a more singular sense even if they are part of a larger story. I don’t know. I’m sure they would’ve been great but I really like this as a standalone.

But he was really ready to do a sequel. But the studio intervened.

His most criminally under appreciated film*

*some nerd asking me if I have watched the superior foreign language film. No, no I have not. Im currently talking about the Fincher Film.

That’s super funny. I definitely enjoy the 2009 film with Noomi Rapace. That said, it really does not come close in terms of quality IMO but it’s a very strong performance.

Feel the same. I respect the original but the remake is by far superior.

i agree, but the taxi scene in The Game still has me in awe at the technical brilliance behind it. Especially when it hits water.

but without a doubt, Girl With The Dragon… is my favorite from him.

The best part of the movie for sure. I still, to this day, overlook the cinematography of The Game just because I have it in lower tier Fincher.

The cgi fire ruined this almost perfect scene imo

u/coffee-and-machines avatar

Really?

I guess you only hated it after you have seen BTS, because there is no way you knew it was CGI in the moment of watching it ;)

No sorry but there is nothing natural in this fire and this is the case of every fire in movies now.
