If you’ve primarily used your Netflix account to keep up with AMC’s The Walking Dead all these years, odds are you are getting one particular show in your recommendations. That show is Netflix’s own take on the zombie apocalypse drama, a series called Black Summer starring Jaime King. The series is actually intended as a prequel series to Syfy’s Z Nation, but set way, way before the events of that series in the early days of the zombie apocalypse. Z Nation wrapped up in 2018, and now Black Summer lives on.

But Black Summer is not a dark comedy like Z Nation. It’s a full-on, horrific zombie drama about one mother’s harrowing struggle. Curious to know more about the new Netflix show? We’ve got the info!

What is Black Summer about?

If you think the summer heat is bad, just imagine enduring it during the fresh new hell of a zombie apocalypse! Set just over a month after the breakout of zombies, Black Summer follows one mother’s journey as she stops at nothing to reunite with her lost daughter. There are just a whole bunch of walking undead complications standing between her and her loved one. Will she survive the summer?

Who is in the Black Summer cast?

Jaime King stars as Rose, a midwestern mom trying desperately to find her lost kid. King previously appeared in the films Pearl Harbor and Sin City and starred in the TV drama Hart of Dixie. She is not, in fact, Jaime Pressly from My Name Is Earl, despite both of them being named Jaime (spelled J-A-I-M-E) and looking exactly alike.

The show also stars Justin Chu Cary (Lucifer), Kelsey Flower (The Unauthorized Full House Story), Gwynyth Walsh (The Man in the High Castle, B’Etor on Star Trek: The Next Generation), Christine Lee (Travelers), newcomer Mustafa Alabssi, and Sal Velez Jr. (Hand of God).

Where is a Black Summer review?

You can find a bunch of reviews for Black Summer on Rotten Tomatoes, where the show currently holds a 60% freshness. Many of the critics have favorably compared Black Summer to The Walking Dead, saying the Netflix show has all the horror and suspense of the AMC zombie show and also moves at a much brisker pace. On the negative side, a couple of critics knock the show for not having much in the way of gripping storytelling. But at 60% and only 5 reviews in, this really seems to be your call!
