Horror film directors should see this film and take notes on how it's done. Today people seem to think that the more gore and blood you have the more frightening your horror film is, no, blood and gore just makes the kills more violent, believable, and sometimes there is so much gore that it's used just to shock you. Let's get on with the show shall we.

The Story: Bubba an intellectually disabled man, is friends with a young girl named Marylee. One day Marylee is attacked and mauled to death. 4 not so intelligent men believe that Bubba killed Marylee. After a chase Bubba is shot to death while hiding in a scarecrow. Now in court the 4 men lie and say that Bubba attacked them with a pitchfork which is a lie. One of the 4 men also kill Bubba's mother. Each man who has committed the deed begin to die off. Who is killing them off? Is it Marylee, Bubba's mother, or the scarecrow? Well, watch the film and find out.

The Good: Very suspenseful, atmospheric, well acted, well written, well filmed, everything about it is good.

The Bad: This film is underrated.

Fun Facts: Larry Drake plays Bubba, he would go on to play Dr.Giggles and Durrant in the first 2 Darkman films. Dark Night of the Scarecrow started the killer scarecrow sub genre.

*SPOILER WARNING* *SPOILER WARNING* *SPOILER WARNING* *SPOILER WARNING*

Creepy Moments: The film over all has a creepy tone, especially in the end scene. When Marylee says hello to the scarecrow (possessed by Bubba you could say), the scarecrow sort of turns it's head and it's very inhuman something that adds to the effect, it's a quick head turn and inside the mouth hole and eye holes of the scarecrow it's just pitch black. The scene is also heart warming as the scarecrow gives Marylee a flower.

The film is very emotional and does have an affect on the viewer. Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a treat to watch especially during the Halloween season which it aired on TV in 1981 on October 24th.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a very solid film and so I give it 5/5 stars.

Very pleased to finally own this movie. I saw this when it aired on T.V. in the fall of 1981. Loved it then, and I still do. The restoration is great, both the audio and picture. This movie proves that a simple story can be very good. The setting for the movie was great - somewhere in the south, though we don't know exactly where. The scenery suggests a peaceful, safe place to be, but tragedy and violence still occur. Larry Drake was perfect as Bubba, as was Tonya Crowe as young Marylee. Their friendship was sweet to see, and very innocent. Enter Charles Durning as the town postmaster. He has an intense dislike for Bubba, as he has an unnatural liking for the girl. So when the opportunity presents itself, he leads a group of bigots to go after Bubba. They do, and then discover a terrible mistake. Enter the suspense. Tension mounts as the four "men" try to keep their mouths shut as the guilt lingers and festers. All four of them eventually face unusual retribution for what they did. The District Attorney is intent on exacting justice on the murderers. Bubba's mother, played quite nicely by Jocelyn Brando, believes justice will be carried out regardless of the legal system. Then there is also young Marylee, who knows what has happened, and hates Mr. Hazelrigg. Having the leader of the group be a postman was a good choice, and Mr. Durning is very cunning and slick in his actions and words. The justice Bubba's mother believes in is in fact carried out without her doing anything at all, which is appropriate. Also worth mentioning is the score. Anyone who watches horror movies knows the score can play a big part in the effectiveness of the film overall, and also for key points in the film. This score is just about perfect, eerie and creepy when it should be, not used when it shouldn't be, and able to almost act as a dialog without words when nobody is speaking. The feelings it creates are terrific. This is about as good as any made-for-T.V. movie ever made, regardless of the genre. Quite memorable, so much so that when I mentioned buying the movie to my Dad, he remembered the movie right away - a full 31 years later! This is definitely a nice movie for any collection, and highly recommended.

Wow! What a dark and creepy style movie! Being made in 1981, the creators of the film wanted a new approach and didn't want to repeat the Friday or Halloween theme movies going on in that year. Instead, they came up with the idea of a Scarecrow as a figure to be afraid of here. The FIRST of it's kind in a "horror" movie and what a movie it was. Made for TV back then, I recall seeing it when I was 15 at the time. It still is creepy in a way and in certain scenes, it has a definite horror feel all the way. Coupled with the music, it is perfect. The movie looks really good, even for this 30th Anniversary Deluxe DVD Edition.

After a near tragic dog attack on Merrylee, a mentally challenged young man is hunted down and shot by a local group of city men, lead by The Letter Carrier, Otis Hazelrigg. Once they find out that it was a mistake and that the girl is basically unharmed, they try and hide the murder from the rest of the local residents. But, one by one, they seem to be dying in tragic "accidents" themselves.

Some really good Special Features here on this release! Don't be fooled into thinking it's a splatter filled blood fest, it is anything but that. There is some minor blood in a few scenes, but overall, it is about the atmosphere of the movie, the characters, and the music.
The movie has been Restored and looks great!!
*** The Special Features include a Q & A with Larry Drake as Bubba Ritter, Tonya as the little girl, Merrylee, and the creator of the film on a panel.
A vintage intro from CBS on the movie..
A featurette that the creators of the movie discuss how it came to be and got made.

Quite atmospheric. Doesn’t rely on gore to keep the film moving. Some good actors among the cast, which puts the film scut above the usual stalk’n’slash films of the era.

I think this film is the best of the television horror films. I remember being terrified by this movie, Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, Bad Ronald and The Car when I would watch them in reruns. Now I can be creeped out all over again.
