Joel Edgerton is playing a physicist who cannot control (or fathom) the constraints of the scientific world once he wakes up in a parallel reality.

Edgerton executives produces and stars in Apple TV+ sci-fi series “Dark Matter,” based on Blake Crouch’s novel of the same name. Author Crouch adapts his own book for the screen, penning the pilot of the nine-episode series and serving as showrunner.

The official logline reads: “There are infinite realities. This is the one where Jason Dessen (Edgerton) kidnaps himself.”

“Dark Matter” centers on Edgerton’s Jason Dessen, who is a physicist, professor, and family man. That is, until one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago, he’s abducted into an alternate version of his life. As Jason tries to return to his reality amid the multiverse of lives he could have lived, he also struggles to unravel the science behind the phenom, all while trying to save his family from a different version of himself.

Jennifer Connelly and Oakes Fegley star as Jason’s wife and son, while Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, and Dayo Okeniyi round out the cast.

The novel was first set to be adapted into a film in 2014. Crouch called the series “eight years in the making” in a 2022 social media post.

“Fast X” helmer Louis Leterrier was originally attached to direct the first four episodes of the series, but exited due to scheduling conflicts. Jakob Verbruggen is now helming.

Novelist Crouch serves as executive producer, showrunner, and writer alongside executive producers Matt Tolmach and David Manpearl for Matt Tolmach Productions, and actor Edgerton. “Dark Matter” is produced for Apple TV+ by Sony Pictures Television, with the first two episodes debuting May 8, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through June 26.

Edgerton’s TV resume includes “Obi-Wan Kenobi” with him reprising his role as Owen Lars from “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith.” He recently appeared in George Clooney’s feature “The Boys in the Boat” and led horror films “The Gift,” “It Comes At Night,” “The Strangers,” and more.

“Dark Matter” premieres May 8 on Apple TV+. Check out the trailer below.
