There aren’t many romantic thrillers that are as simultaneously steamy and intricate as Dark Desire. The Spanish-language Netflix original started as the story of one married woman who had an affair to get back at her husband. Cut to 18 episodes later and mothers and daughters are taking the same lovers, brothers are in love with the same women, and everyone has their own pet theory for one mysterious death.

It’s a lot to handle. If you’re searching for a guide as to what Dark Desire‘s ending meant, we have you covered. From what that ending could mean for Dark Desire Season 2 to whether or not Season 2 is even happening, consider this your guide to the final moments of this scandalous new show.

Will There Be a Dark Desire Season 2?

It’s too early to say. The steamy thriller just premiered on Netflix this past Wednesday, July 15. The streaming giant has yet to announce whether or not there will be a new season. But since Dark Desire stops at a pretty tantalizing place and it’s currently among the top 10 Netflix titles in the United States, it seems likely that this romantic drama will be getting another season.

When Will Dark Desire Season 2 Premiere?

Production for Dark Desire started in May of 2019 before it was released in July of this year. Based on that timeline it takes roughly a year to make new episodes of the series. If Dark Desire is picked up for another season, we can likely expect new episodes sometime in 2021 or 2022.

How Did Dark Desire End? Dark Desire‘s Ending Explained

Buckle up, because this thriller ended with a whole lot of drama. Everything in this steamy mystery came down to Brenda’s (María Fernanda Yepes) death. Though it was originally ruled as a suicide, Brenda’s former lover Esteban (Erik Hayser) and her best friend Alma (Maite Perroni) refused to believe that was what really happened, inventing a complicated conspiracy theory.

It turns out that sometimes the best theory is the most straightforward one. Brenda did in fact take her own life. While she was sleeping with Esteban she was also sleeping with Alma’s husband Leonardo (Jorge Poza). At the same time Esteban fell in love with his brother’s wife, Alma. That’s the position Brenda found herself in: the man she was in love with was married to her best friend and her replacement hookup was more interested in that married friend than her. Brenda killed herself because of unrequited love.

So where did that leave Darío (Alejandro Speitzer)? To fully understand we need to back up a bit. Darío’s grandfather was a millionaire with two sons, Antonio and Alberto. After Alberto was written out of the will the rejected brother struck up a deal with the corrupt cop Esteban. By framing Antonio for the murder of Leslie Delgado, the Guerra fortune was supposed to eventually go to Alberto and, through Alberto, Esteban. But things didn’t go according to plan. Antonio killed himself before the will could be rewritten. That left Darío as the heir to his grandfather’s vast fortune.

Dark Desire’s final moments revealed that Darío never died in a fire. Instead, he and Esteban burned the Godfather’s body, Jose Luis Valdez, to make it look like he was murdered. Now on the run, Darío is with Esteban. But since he’s the one in control of the money now, Esteban is going to be working for him from now on. Considering that Dark Desire Season 1 also ended with Alma separating from her husband Leonardo, it seems likely that Season 2 will be about her old flame coming back from the dead.
