Biography

  • Darius Rucker is a singer–songwriter out of South Carolina, United States, best known as the lead vocalist of rock band Hootie & The Blowfish. He has released a string of successful solo albums that fall into the country–pop genre and a number of chart topping singles.

Rucker founded Hootie & The Blowfish in 1986 with bandmates Mark Bryan, Jim “Soni” Sonefeld and Dean Felber. The outfit apparently came about when Bryan heard Rucker singing in the shower of the college dorms and was awestruck by his vocal prowess.

Ruckers mainstream success with Hootie & The Blowfish was the 1994 release “Cracked Rear View”, which was a staggering success. It was the best selling album of 1995 and went platinum 16 times over in the United States. The album contained the outfit’s best known tune “Only Wanna Be with You”, which peaked at Number 6 and the other hits “Hold My Hand”, “Let Her Cry” and “Time”.

After a small hiatus and an R’n’B styled debut solo album, “Back to Then” (2002), which amounted to modest success, Rucker’s solo career kicked off properly with his country release “Learn to Live” in 2008. The album achieved gold status with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and later received a platinum certification in 2009. The album’s single “History in the Making” peaked at Number 3 on the Billboard Country Chart. Three singles topped it at Number 1: "Don't Think I Don't Think About It", "It Won't Be Like This for Long" and "Alright", making Ruckers the first black man to chart a number one on the Hot Country Songs charts since 1983. He was also first black man to win the Country Music Association’s New Artist Award.

The album was released on Capitol Records, which would become Rucker’s rock in his solo career, going on to record “Charleston, SC 1966” in 2010, which included the Number 1 singles “Come Back Song” and “This”, and 2012’s “True Believers”, which got him yet another Number 1 with his cover of Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel” featuring vocals from Lady Antebellum.

Ruckers announced a Christmas album in 2014 that would feature a collaboration with Sheryl Cole on the track “Baby It’s Cold Outside”.

Live reviews

  • Darius Rucker

I habe waited 10 years to see Darius live and I was not disapointed ys know what can I say, Darius is just a genuinely nice guy and an amazing singer, a little story for ya... Darius was half way through a song and one of the guys in the front row put his fist out to try get a fist bump and Darius just moved on, I felt so bad, but at the end of the song Darius says "I'm glad this happened because I thought it was just an American thing... here I am half way through a song doing my thing, because when I do this song I only see the girls in the room, that's all I see, you know the ladies are looking at me like damn I want you" (the crowd was roaring because the mannerisms Darius were making were hilarious) Darius then goes on to say there's always one who goes (he bow's his head and put his hand fully out stretched into the air for a fist bump) and say something like you're the man, anyway he went back and fist bumped the dude and it was just awesome, kind of a you had to be there moment but awesome non the less, he sang my favourite so "let her cry" and if was spine tingling amazeballs, if you ever get the chance to see DR, don't hesitate just do it, you won't regret it.

  • Darius Rucker was a hard ticket to get. His show was in a smaller place in my town and luckily I had a friend that was able to get an extra ticket.

The place only holds about 2500 people and Darius is very popular these days so I was really lucky to get it. The crowd was a mix between pop music people and country music fans. There were some people with cowboy hats but it was mostly 35 and up professional people who grew up listening to his music. The show itself was great. It was high energy from start to finish.

His bandmates were top notch and Darius sounded great. He did some of his Hootie songs but mostly he did his country songs. The great thing about the show was that he interacted so great with the audience. You really felt like you knew him and could sit and have a beer with him after the show. He also smiled a lot and you can tell her really enjoyed doing this and performing.

He closed with his cover hit song of “Wagon Wheel” by Old Crow Medicine Show. The crowd was great and the music was awesome, really great night.

  • I saw Darius Rucker for the first time last month, in Chicago. He was so good that I drove two hours to see him in Grand Rapids this month. While he was better in Chicago, I still enjoyed him tremendously and I'll definitely see him again.

First of all, he's extremely charismatic and energetic so just being in the building with him makes you feel really good. Second he has an awesome band that can play anything. They also have great harmonies and they sound really good together. In fact, they sounded so good that even though the Van Andel Arena's poor sound system rendered me unable to enjoy the opening acts, I thoroughly enjoyed Darius Rucker and his Carolina Boys. I'll definitely see him again anytime he comes anywhere within a four hour trip but I won't see him or anyone else at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI.

  • The consert was absolutely fantastic and much better than I thought it would be. The atmosphere was very good and Darius really got the audience going. The band were tight and very good and appeared to be really enjoying themselves. Darius was exceptional, his voice is one on its own. 'Let her cry' was one of my outstanding tunes and the Oasis finish was really good. I knew it was coming because I had read other reviews and was unsure of how he would carry it off, but I needn't have worried because for me it was better than Oasis. We had a test of his new album when he sang Homegrown which was brilliant. The whole night was that good I am going again tonight in Manchester. Thanks Darius you are a true entertainer and leave your fans being true believers in you. By Tina S

  • AMAZING...just like last time he was in Hamburg! It is such a gift to be able to see such a HUGE American Country STAR in such a small and personal venue!

Darius Rucker is one of the BEST country shows I have been to, and I have been to a lot! He gets down and personal with the crowd, and his staff has the sound just right! Not so loud that you can't hear his wonderful voice, but loud enough that you hear him over the crowd singing.

Darius Rucker...you know how to do it right!

Thank you for another OUTSTANDING show! I will be there next time you come to Hamburg...it would be really nice if you could come to Southern Denmark!

    Until next time...

  • Darius was amazing! This was my second time seeing him live. His voice is incredible and he always gets the crowd into every single song. Not to mention he is just such a down to earth person. Such a great guy and you can tell that by how he performs on stage. He interacts with the crowd and makes everyone feel at home. Such an incredible performer! Not to mention the opening acts were good too. Michael Ray was good, and Dan + Shay were amazing!!!!! They have such amazing voices. What a great show this was!

  • Loved his concert! He appears to be such a "down-to-earth" guy who loves music and the audience. He had a great mix of his new country (which is incredible) and his old "Hootie" persona - who doesn't love Hootie? One of the greatest moments was when he brought the bands traveling with him on stage to sing "hold my hand" - what a great performance and mix of styles. I am now an even bigger fan then before. Best concert of the summer!

  • OMG, what a fantastic night, Darius Rucker, a true performer, hope he tell his Buddies to come over, amazing band, took me back to Nashville the place was bouncing, went over so quick. Support from Russell Dickerson was as good a support artist I have seen, received a standing ovation at the end of his session, said he'd be back, hope he goes home and tells all his Buddies what a fabulous venue the Sage is and with it a fantastic crowd
