Chelsea are reportedly preparing to repeat their process of signing Daniel Sturridge back in 2009 by snapping up another impressive Manchester City reject at the end of the season. The Blues managed to land Sturridge following his departure from the Etihad Stadium on a free transfer after recognising the untapped potential he had before selling him to Liverpool for an eight-figure fee four years later.
It seems as though Chelsea are weighing up the idea of going after yet another former City player in Brahim Diaz, who has been impressing at AC Milan on loan from Real Madrid over the course of this season. The Spaniard has emerged as a summer target for Chelsea, according to The Mirror, and could be sold in the summer due to his status as a fringe player at the Bernabeu.
AC Milan have the option to buy Diaz for around £19million when the campaign draws to a close but Real Madrid are said to be looking to recoup the £23.5m fee they paid to sign him from City back in 2019. The Italian giants will reportedly ask Diaz's parent club if a deal can be struck for around the £21m mark but do not wish to go any higher, which has opened the door for a possible return to the Premier League in advance of next season.
Chelsea are believed to be keeping a close eye on the situation as they mull over a potential £25m approach in the summer, while Newcastle have also been credited with an interest in bringing Diaz back to English shores later this year. However, another issue complicating any deal is the future of Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, who has been widely tipped to leave the Spanish giants at the end of the current campaign.

Ancelotti has seemingly decided that Diaz is surplus to requirements for as long as he remains in charge, which suggests that the ex-City forward would be free to leave if the veteran manager stays at Real Madrid for another season. Things could change if Ancelotti walks away from the club or is sacked, though, with the powers that be at the Bernabeu eager to tie Diaz down to a new and improved contract until the summer of 2027.
It remains to be seen whether Diaz will eventually join the revolution at Chelsea if he is targeted by free-spending Blues owner Todd Boehly, who splashed over £330m on new players over the course of the recent January transfer window. He has already negotiated a lucrative deal to land RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku at the end of the season, while several other high-profile targets have been linked with Chelsea over the last few weeks ahead of another expensive recruitment drive in the summer.

Boehly's aggressive transfer strategy has not been without its critics since he took control of Chelsea last year, though, with Gary Neville recently questioning whether or not it will prove fruitful for the west Londoners in the long run.
"For me, I'm struggling with it, that the wheel can be reinvented and they've found something really clever here that someone else hasn't spotted," said Neville last month when quizzed on Chelsea's tendency to negotiate eight-year contracts for their new signings under the direction of Boehly in order to circumvent Financial Fair Play regulations.
"They could look like the smartest people in the room in two years, or they could look pretty stupid. I don't know which it will be but it will be one or the other, it won't be in the middle. It will be either: What the hell was that? Or they've changed the model in English football and well done to them. We will have to see how this plays out."
