About Daniel Passarella
This Argentine-born former football player has won all the accolades needed to call him one of the greatest in South American football. Leading the Argentina team to win the 1978 World cup and becoming Argentina and Uruguay national teams manager, Daniel Passarella is in a class of his own.
Early Life and Playing Career
Born in 1953, Daniel Alberto Passarella started his career at Club Atlético Sarmiento. It was at River Plate his career blossomed, scoring 90 goals and becoming the best Argentine defenders of his time. His impressive performance earned him a spot on the national team.
Passarella became a national hero after steering Argentina to its first World Cup trophy at the 1978 FIFA World Cup hosted on home soil. He thus became the first Argentine player to hold the World Cup.
His brilliant showing at the 1982 World Cup got the attention of Italian club Fiorentina, where he played for four years and scored over 20 goals, an impressive goal scoring record for a defender. After a two-year stay at Internazionale, he returned to Argentina to play for River Plate. The Argentine defender hung up his boots at the end of the 1988/89 season. All in all, he made over 440 club football appearances, scoring over 140 goals.
He made 70 appearances for his national team from 1976 to 1986.
Coaching Career
After his retirement from the game, he became the manager of his last playing club River Plate in 1989. From 1994 to 1998, he served as the head coach of the Argentine team, leading them to the 1998 World Cup held in France, where they were eliminated at the quarter final.
Passarella also served as the coach of Uruguay. Other clubs that he coached include Corinthians and Parma.
Notable Accomplishments
The 1978 World Cup winner was named one of the 125 Greatest Living Footballers at a 2004 FIFA Awards Ceremony by Brazilian football legend Pele.
Passarella was voted Footballer of the Year of Argentina in 1976.
With River Plate, he won the Primera División six times.
As manager of River Plate, he won the Primera División once – in the 1989/90 season.
In 1997, he was named South American Coach of the Year.
Trivia
His approach was considered too traditional, banning players with long hair, earrings and different sexual orientation from his squad. He went on to coach the Uruguay teams but was not successful.
