Daniel Craig Does His Own James Bond Stunts. Here's Every Time He's Been Injured.

James Bond movies are known for their boundary-pushing stunts and special effects, but the actors who play 007 have rarely rolled up their sleeves and done the stunts themselves. The exception is Daniel Craig.

"He gets his hands very dirty," Gary Powell, chief stunt coordinator for Bond films Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale, told the Guardian in 2008. "Daniel puts the work in, even if it's something he's not keen on." For instance, Craig is not "a lover of heights," according to Powell, but in Quantum of Solace he jumped out of a three-story window onto moving bus.

All of this stunt work has led to injuries for Craig, including a hurt ankle during the filming of the latest Bond movie, known as Bond 25. Here are the many injuries Craig, whose now 51, has sustained over the years while filming Bond movies.

With Craig as Bond, the 007 franchise has taken a decidedly dark and grittier turn, which is keeping more in the spirit of Ian Fleming's depiction of the British super spy in his novels. That was immediately apparent from Craig's first outing as Bond in 2006's Casino Royale, a film during which the actor, who was 37 at the time, smashed out his two front teeth.

It happened during a fight scene in Prague with "minor actors," according to a report in the Sunday Mirror. "He put his hand to his mouth, but the blood started to seep through his fingers—it was horrible," an unnamed source told the British paper. "He did not make a fuss though."

A dentist was flown in from London to treat Craig, who had the teeth replaced and then started wearing a protective shield during fight scenes. The injury didn't affect the production of the film, according to the Mirror.

While filming his second Bond film, Craig sustained at least two injuries. The actor, who was 40 at the time, donned a sling around his right arm during the promotional tour for Quantum of Solace, because he'd had surgery to repair what he described as a separation of his shoulder. Craig told the Telegraph it was an old injury he "probably aggravated ... by jumping around on Bond movies.”

“It wasn’t an essential operation but if I don’t do it now, I could do something on the next movie and rip it out of its socket,” he said. “It’s just a pain in the ass, really, and it’ll be a long wait before it heals properly.”

But that wasn't his only injury on Quantum. He had to visit the hospital during production because he lost the tip of one of his fingers, according to People magazine. “It wasn’t as extreme as all that. I lost the pad," he told Playboy magazine at the time. “I was bleeding a lot," he continued. "I had to get it cauterized. Filming stopped and everybody went, ‘Oh my God! He sliced the end of his finger off!’ They went looking for it, but couldn't find it.”

Production of the most-recent Bond film, Spectre, was halted briefly in 2015 when Craig sprained his knee. Craig, then 46, was filming a fight scene at Pinewood Studios in London when the injury took place, according to the Guardian. It was a minor injury and filming resumed within a couple of days.

The latest Bond movie is currently in production, having just finished its first phase of filming in Jamaica. According to the Sun, Craig hurt his ankle during the shoot—he slipped and fell while running—and was flown to the U.S. for X-Rays. It's unclear how serious the injury is, but filming at Pinewood Studios has reportedly been delayed.
