North Texans should be on the lookout for severe weather Friday as a strong storm system is expected to roll across the southern U.S.

Widespread showers and thunderstorms are projected to hit between 2 and 7 p.m., bringing with them a combination of high winds, low temperatures, heavy rain, hail and even the potential for tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

The most-severe storms are expected along and east of Interstate 35, the weather service said.

Several Dallas-area schools have moved their Friday-night football games to Thursday, after bad weather plagued last Friday’s games.

The weather service encourages area residents to plan ahead, and be prepared to look for severe thunderstorm watches and warnings. A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather, and a warning means severe thunderstorms are happening at that time.

“Don’t be anxious!” the weather service wrote on Twitter Thursday evening. “Just stay weather aware and take shelter if a warning is issued. The setup for Friday is no worse than a few others we’ve already endured last spring.”
