The Dallas Cowboys Playoff Window Has Closed

Every year is Dallas’s year to Cowboys fans, but after a stagnant off-season where the Cowboys sat around and watched, they will be in for a rude awakening next season. After another disappointing loss in the wild-card round, the Cowboys let an early round exit crush another dominant regular season. Jerry Jones believes Dallas has had a top-contending roster for the past three seasons, but with no splash moves in free agency, the Cowboys are in for some serious regression come next season. NFC East rivals, the Washington Commanders, addressed key needs in free agency, and are bound to leap over the Cowboys next season. Their falloff is imminent, and their stagnation will be their downfall in missing the playoffs next year.

With Jerry Jones deciding to let Dak Prescott play out his final year of his contract, Dallas may be looking at Prescott’s last season in a Cowboys uniform. Getting a deal done to extend Prescott was the better move, but Jerry Jones wants to see how far Prescott can take them this year. In free agency, the Cowboys picked up Eric Kendricks, which was a solid move in trying to bolster a weak linebacker core. However, addressing just one position on a defense that had serious issues stopping the run is not enough. Unless the Cowboys can see immediate impact from Kneeland and Liufau, their second and third round defensive draft picks, they are going to run into similar issues as they did last season.

On top of this, the Cowboys lost starting running back Tony Pollard in free agency, and although Pollard failed to reach the potential of a three-down back, they are now stuck with a lackluster running back room led by ninth year starter Ezekiel Elliot. Their offense became stagnant at times last season, in the heavy reliance on CeeDee Lamb in the receiving game. With just one receiver selection in the sixth round, the Cowboys are going to suffer from a lack of depth at wideout. Tight end Jake Ferguson proved to be a vital part of their offense last year, but their overall lack of receiving talent will lead to an extremely underwhelming running and passing attack.

Year after year, the Cowboys fail to pull the trigger on the big move that will push them over the top. After putting together top offenses with Dak Prescott over the last eight years and still coming up short, the Cowboys playoff window has closed, and they will be on the outside looking in next season.
