      Critics Consensus

While it may strike some viewers as slight, Cyrus is a successful hybrid of mainstream production values and the mumblecore ideals of directors Jay and Mark Duplass. Read critic reviews

Imagine a less fart joke version of Step Brothers, that is what you have here. Cyrus is a calm comedy, not many laughs, but something you can enjoy. With similar dialogue to "Puffy chair" and earlier Duplass film. This dialogue either realistic or corny, depending on your looks of things. Funny, sweet, and simple.

First Review of 2012 "Cyrus": The fantastic ensemble really give off the feeling that they genuinely are a disfunctional family because of amazing chemistry with eachother and still manage to bring some laughs with it. The Duplas' have created a smart and believable movie with a simple yet entertaining central idea.

This movie's plot strikes me as something you'd be able to relate to in every day life. And Reilly, Tomei and Hill do a great job as the triangle lead. There's just enough humor in this to keep you interested if you expected a comedy (it could have been a really dark comedy if they wrote it like that) but there's also enough humanism to level the playing field. At times, I found it awkward and troubling to watch the relationship between Tomei and Hill's characters as overly protective mother and emotionally needy son. But that's exactly how these situations are supposed to play out! The actors are top notch in this. These indy films don't always succeed in convincing people that they are capable of a wider range in Hollywood, but this counters that with the performances these actors in the film have given. At a contrite hour and thirty minutes, it leaves you pulling for everyone to come together in the end as this movie roller coasters its way through their lives.

Sneaky funny. John C. Reilly delivers as usual, Jonah Hill is a hilarious creep.
