PBKS vs CSK Highlights, IPL 2024: Chennai Super Kings beat Punjab Kings by 28 runs in Dharamsala

That's it. That felt like it took ever though it was only 7:10 and it one of the rare occasions noon match got done before the night match thanks to some abysmal batting display from Punjab chasing a low total. Credit must be given to the Super Kings for the way they have gone about their defense. Super Kings go into the top four again with the win.

Rabada hits one into the stands and we somehow manage to get into the final over. CSK are letting a few boundaries away which they would not like as NRR might play down the line in future games as the mid-table is tight at the moment.

Shardul comes into the attack and he picks up the wicket of Rahul Chahar with an excellent yorker. CSK are just moments away from a well-earned win here. Rabada has walked in for Punjab to face the music. 

The game which promised a lot in the first half is turned out to be a one-sided affair. While one can say they had the depth in the batting once Bairstow and Rossowu were done in the first over it was an extremely long way back for Punjab Kings from that point onwards.

Rahul Chahar is getting a few boundaries away here. CSK have won this game but they need to win it with a margin that might come in handy later in the tournament. But this has been an extremely poor batting performance from Punjab.

Vinayakk: Perhaps the match was already slipping out of their grasp but within four balls of madness, Punjab Kings sealed their own fate. At the end of the 12th over, Simarjeet Singh couldn't quite believe is luck (or lack thereof). Another short-of-length delivery, and Ashutosh Sharma – perhaps Punjab's last hope – could not have picked out the fielder better. Moeen Ali at midwicket, however, dropped a sitter. At the start of the 13th over, however, Sam Curran would offer another chance to CSK and this time they didn't miss it. Ravindra Jadeja had the Punjab captain dismissed, with Mitch Santner taking a catch at long off. Two balls later, Ashutosh – just after his reprieve earlier – decided to go hard at it again. This time, the wily Jadeja induced an outside edge that looped to short third. Simarjeet didn't have the wicket last over, but he took the catch this time. "Lack of discipline in their batting," critiqued Brian Lara on air. Indeed so.

Gleeson has come back into the attack and he bowls an excellent over both in terms of pace and length he has hit. CSK seems to find a length on the pitch which is difficult to hit as a batter and they are pecking at it like a woodpecker continuously. 

That over from Jadeja is probably the end of this chase from PBKS. He first picked up Sam Curran and then got Ashutosh two of the last recognized pairings. This has been Jadeja's game out and out. With the defeat Punjab too are almost out of it.

Simarjeet is bowling with heat here. He is troubling both the batters with his pace. He is hitting those hard lengths consistently which is not letting batters play their shots freely. Ashutosh was done for pace in the last over and chipped one in the air which Moeen dropped at mid-wicket.

Punjab needs to build a partnership here. The nature of this ground is such that any amount of runs can be chased down if there are wickets in hand but that is the problem for Punjab right now they don't have many. Curran and Ashutosh need to keep their cool.

Simrajeet has been brought into the attack and he picks a wicket. Now it is the third over in a row Punjab Kings lost a wicket. This is excellent from Chennai Super Kings defending a small total they have done exactly what the doctor ordered which is to pick wickets.

Well, well this chase continues to swing from one end to the other end. It is Prabhsimran who is gone now. Similar to the last over he tried to play an inside-out shot but this time was beaten in the flight of the ball and hit it straight to long-off This game is turning into a humdinger now.

Santner picks Shashank Singh. What a time to pick a wicket for the Super Kings just when things where looking like they were going out of control the Kiwi came with the breakthrough. This is turning into a cracking contest now here in Dharamsala.

Now the partnership is growing too quickly even for CSK's liking they need to pick a few quick wickets to pull this game now. Jadeja bowled a decent over until the final ball when he tossed one up and Prabhsimran drove for a nice boundary.

Deshpande has been thrown in the ball for the third over and rightly so. However, both the Punjab youngsters played sumptuous shots in that over. It has been the way Super Kings where expected to bat in that powerplay. It was never about the runs they made but the intention they showed.

It has been poor over from Gleeson. All the pressure that has been built before that has been taken off by him. He bowled a few looseners which young Punjab batters capitalized on Prabhsimran now seems to have got the measure of the pitch and is looking a lot more comfortable now.

That is a good over from Deshpande he is getting plenty out of the surface at the minute. The ball is moving both ways for him. It might not be a bad ploy for Gaikwad to bring in another seamer from the other end. As we update Gleeson has been given the ball.

This is good from CSK. Defending a low total this is the kind of start they would have been hoping for that is what the bowlers delivered for them. Santner has held up an end and Deshpande has been bowling cracking lengths and getting subtle seam moment.

Tushar Deshpande delivers a cracking over. First, it was Bairstow who got a couple of inside edges and got away however, Despande got third time lucky, and later in the over Deshpande delivered a peach of a delivery to dismiss Rilee Roussow. 

Mitchell Santner has taken the new ball for the Super Kings. The ball did grip a bit. Will be interesting to see how Super Kings will approach their defence with the limited bowling resources they have with them. Meanwhile, Punjab might have also NRR in mind.

Wicket was on drier side. I have too much respect for him to celebrate when I get him out (on Dhoni). One of the advantages of playing a day game is that the square is quite rough. So the ball starts reversing. In my first over it was reversing. It's all about the feel of that delivery (slower one). More you bowl the better you get. Most batters don't pick it. Have been practicing in the nets, and when it comes out it gives you great results.

Venkata Krishna B: It is a visual that has been replayed a million times. In 2010, in a must-win last league game, CSK in dire straits, Dhoni walked in hijacked a game out of nowhere. The two sixes in the final over off Irfan Pathan and Dhoni's celebration is part of the folklore. It was an evening where he showed a lot of emotions and was pumped-up. That win took them to their maiden title. And 14 years later, at the same ground, a struggling CSK needing him badly in the death overs, Dhoni walked in to a rousing reception and walked out to total silence, bowled first ball by Harshal Patel. It really felt like an end of a era.

It is a tame batting effort from the Super Kings in the end. There are demons on the wicket however, they manage to shoot themselves in the foot. They need to bowl out of their skins to stay alive in this competition. A loss here at this stage would be hard to swallow and recover from. 

Fruitful over for Punjab as MS Dhoni departs for a golden duck. Excellent slower one from Harshal and earlier in the over Harshal picked up Shardul Thakur. Jadeja is fighting the lone battle for CSK out there at the moment. 

Venkata Krishna B: Three years ago Rahul Chahar had emerged as India's first choice leg-spinner in T20Is. Not much a big turner of the ball, he is what you call an ideal T20 leg spinner... Fast, flat and a googly that turns more  than the leggie. That he kept pushing batsmen to the backfoot, made him a hot property. But since the 2021 T20 World Cup, his form has fluctuated and this season even was dropped to the bench. But in the last couple of game, he is coming on to his own. After knocking CSK on their own turf last Wednesday, he did it again on Sunday, breaking their back in the middle over.

This is difficult to understand why MS Dhoni has not walked into the middle to bat. The stage was set for his cameo. The CSK fans would be hoping he is suffering from an injury of some sort. Meanwhile, Chahar has come to bowl the 18th over.

Another wicket for Rahul Chahar this time it was Mitchell Santner who gave it his all to hit a flighted delivery into the stands and was caught at long-on. Still, no Dhoni for CSK as Shardul Thakur has walked into the middle. 

Things are going at a snail's pace here in the innings for CSK. No matter how much they will get it will be a below par total. Given the injuries and absence of crucial bowlers, they have to bowl out of their skins and hope in-form Punjab batters make mistakes. 

Venkata Krishna B: In their previous two matches with powerplay not fetching enough runs, Chennai's first six of their innings came only on the 13th over. Their middle-order, which is already short on runs, has been forced to go out on the attack straight away. And Sunday was no different as Shivam Dube picked up his second successive zero, going hard at a widish delivery and just managing to an edge to the wicketkeeper. It has been that sort of season for CSK, where they have to rely on Dube to bail them against the spinners. As Dube departed, it left the rest of the batting unit with a mountain to climb.

Punjab Kings picks another one it is Moeen Ali this time. Back-of-the-hand slower one from Curran Moeen Ale tried to pull the ball and got a top edge straight to the fine-leg fielder inside the ring. Mitchell Santner has walked into the middle for CSK

A couple of good overs back-to-back for Chennai Super Kings. Moeen Ali got into an act against Kagiso Rabada in the previous over. Punjab needs to be a bit cautious here though they are still ahead in this game Chennai can post a score because of the batting conditions here.

Jadeja slammed a couple of boundaries of the final ball of Harshal's over which might give CSK slight relief as they were completely losing the momentum. While they are rebuilding they also need to make sure they keep the run rate at a decent clip.

Jadeja and Moeen Ali are in the middle as of now and CSK is in desperate need of partnership here. This is excellent bowling from Punjab they have been chipping away wickets and every wicket falling is adding further pressure on CSK.

Harshal Patel comes into the attack and bags in Daryl Mitchell once again another batter misread the length seems like there is a bit of uneven bounce. The ball was kept low while Mitchell tried to work the ball on the leg-side and missed a straight one he did review the decision and the it was umpire's call on stumps hitting.

Well, that was a turning over first it was Gaikwad who tried to cut the ball and misread the bounce and was caught by the keeper, and than Dube tried to do the same with the first ball and it was the same result. Just when things looked like they were settling down CSK lost a couple quickly.

After an expensive over of 19 runs from Brar, it has been a good over from Curran. He cut down the angle nicely and did not let batters free their arm. It might be that sort of day where spinners may have a minimum role to play.

Venkata Krishna B: That Chennai Super Kings have a history of backing players battling for form is well known. But even by their standards, how long will they persist with Ajinkya Rahane is the question that gets louder with each passing game. In the past when they backed the likes of Murali Vijay, Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson they could afford to do so as they were winning matches. But this season with Chennai having a mixed season and at a time where each win is crucial, Rahane faltered once again, falling for 9. With Sameer Rizvi, Shaik Rasheed, Ajay Mandal in their ranks, the pressure is mounting on Rahane.

Sam Curran has brought himself into attack and he bowled an excellent over first up. This is a sedate start to the powerplay for CSK. While one may call it solid they have been way too cautious given it is one of the high-scoring grounds.

Expensive over from Arhsdeep. Mitchell hit his trademark six over cover and made use of short balls from Arshdeep Singh which came his way. This is a solid start from CSK but they need to get more out of the next couple of overs. 

Another excellent over from Punjab Kings. After a wicket, Rabada backed it up nicely. This is good from Punjab they are not letting Chennai take advantage of these field restrictions on a wicket which looks excellent for batting. 

Arshdeep Singh finds the breakthrough. Ajinkya Rahane would be kicking himself with the dismissal. The ball was there to hit for a boundary and he chipped in straight to mid-wicket Rabada. The wicket looks excellent for batting and Rahane wasted an opportunity. 

Kagiso Rabada has taken the new ball for Punjab Kings and there was not a lot of swing on offer for him. Both Rahane and Gaikwad looked to push the ball in the gaps and get whatever was possible. Arshdeep Singh has taken the new ball from other end.

It is all set for a cracker of a game. The ground is arguably one of the most beautiful ones in the world. The ground as usual is filled with a sea of yellow as is the case with every game CSK plays irrespective of the venue. Grab a snack and relax it is going to be a blockbuster of a game.

We've just stuck to our process and doing little things right. We don't look at the track record of the opposition, we focus on ourselves and see what we can do right. This season there have been a lot of injuries, flus and forced changes so we've had to tinker with our team. I'd say losing 10 tosses but winning 5 games is a positive. Santner comes in place of Fizz.

We're going to bowl. Day game, try and see how it plays and chase it down. We've got the same team. We've had two really good wins with the same team. Conditions should be fairly even throughout, it's about batting, bowling and fielding well.

Bangladesh speedster Mustafizur Rahman was presented a special signed jersey by Mahendra Singh Dhoni as he leaves the Chennai Super kings to join his national team for the upcoming series against Zimbabwe.

Rahman, who has taken 14 wickets in 9 matches he has played in this season of the Indian Premier League, posted a thank you note to the former CSK skipper.

"64m and 62m boundaries. The air is thin here. It's got a layer of grass. Pretty even but it's dry grass. The fast bowlers can get some help with the new ball. Spinners are going to struggle here, ball won't turn much. Wonderful ground for the batters, expect a lot of runs" say Graeme Swann and Brian Lara.

In the first leg, Punjab Kings defeated Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Chennai are currently placed at fifth in the points table with ten points in as many matches. Punjab are at seventh with eight points in 10 games.

"I think our bowlers were superb, the spinners and Jonny striking them well, even the way we paced that chase, it was brilliant. Need to build on that confidence."

"He (Rahane) looked good. It's the next phase, (to ensure that) his hitting that was so good last year, is more crisp. It's not for lack of intent. In fact, he has doubled up on intent. We're fine with Jinks and the role he plays."
