Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young brought their first tour to the famed Fillmore East in New York City on September 19 – 20, 1969. Neil Young announced he’s preparing “a live double vinyl album” documenting the concerts in a note posted earlier this week on his Neil Young Archives website.

The shows were recorded in eight-track analog with the audience captured in four-track analog and Young is keeping true to the original sources by “staying all analog throughout the production.” While fans will be able to purchase the set in digital, Neil promises “you can feel it in analog, that’s a real thing.” No release date or tracklist has been shared thus far.

Read the start of Neil Young’s post about the forthcoming CSNY live album below:

In September of 1969 Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young appeared at the Fillmore East. The stage was recorded in eight track analog. The audience was recorded in 4 track analog. This was way before digital sound — music on phones, recorded in bits, and pieces of the soul.

I was new in the band, having been brought in by Stephen Stills, my Buffalo Springfield band-mate.

We didn’t know much material to sing together yet. They had the historic CSN album with tracks created largely by Stills, full of great songs and singing by all members. When we took the stage, CSN would play their favorites along with some brand new songs that would later be more Classics. Some, like ‘Our House,’ were so new that only the singer-songwriter would perform them.

The acoustic set was soulfully sung and played, full of great songs and then unknown gems. Staggering harmonies. Happiness.

The electric set quickly moved to a new space.

Now, we have the tapes and they sound so real. We mixed at Sunset Sound – the analog echo chamber, no digital echo. We’re staying all analog throughout the production, with the goal of creating a live double vinyl album. Pure. Analog. No digital.

Sure you will get it in digital, but you can feel it in analog, that’s a real thing. That’s what I think music is. A feeling.

CSNY played a total of four shows over the two nights at the Fillmore East in September of 1969. Each concert featured both an acoustic set and an electric set. Young, Stills, David Crosby and Graham Nash were backed for portions of the shows by drummer Dallas Taylor and bassist Greg Reeves.

Neil Young is gearing up to hit the road with Crazy Horse. The Love Earth Tour begins on April 24 in San Diego. Scroll below for a complete list of Neil Young & Crazy Horse tour dates and ticketing info.
