Verónica P Visually stunning with an equally beautifully unique ghost story to match it. The wonderful romantic victorian thriller will have you craving to watch it over and over again. If you enjoy gloomy weather, aesthetics and a somber tale then this is certainly for you. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Kay C A gothic horror, note the gothic part. I loved it because the ghosts were the least scariest thing in the film Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review Nicolas F "Crimson Peak" is a cinematic ode to the classic gothic tale, enchanting and eerie in equal measure. The film excels in creating a dark and brooding atmosphere, perfectly capturing the essence of gothic horror. The setting of the crumbling manor, imbued with a sense of decay and sorrow, is a character in its own right, contributing significantly to the film's haunting charm. The performances are a highlight, with the actors brilliantly embodying the archetypal characters of gothic fiction. Their portrayals add depth and authenticity to the narrative, echoing the enduring appeal of these timeless stories. The soundtrack, rich and evocative, enhances the film's melancholic mood, weaving a spell of wistful sadness throughout. However, the film is not without its shortcomings. Certain plot elements feel overly predictable, detracting from the crucial sense of mystery and suspense that is a hallmark of the genre. Additionally, the ghostly apparitions, leaning more towards the fantastical than the subtly sinister, don't quite align with my personal preference for understated, more psychologically unnerving specters. Despite these critiques, "Crimson Peak" remains a poignant and beautifully crafted homage to gothic literature. It captures the spirit of the genre with its mesmerizing atmosphere and rich storytelling. The film leaves you in a captivating state of melancholy and wonder, embodying the true essence of a gothic romance. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review yvonne k The movie was really good, it did move a bit fast but what could you expect? Its filled with a horror/gothic concept which I will say was portrayed beautifully Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/07/24 Full Review Eli A Masterful writing and execution. Outstanding performances from Hiddleston and Chastain make this one of del Toro's most haunting films. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review Zoe K Basically a modern version of Dragonwyck and I'm not mad about it. I'm generally not a fan of Mia Wasikowska's blank state/monotone delivery, but actually didn't mind her in this role. Hiddleston & Chastain were excellent (per usual). Kristen Yoonsoo Kim Complex What [Guillermo] del Toro had in mind when shooting Crimson Peak was probably a stylish gothic period piece in the same acclaimed lane as Pan's Labyrinth. Unfortunately, Crimson Peak fails to work on that level. Rated: 3/5 Feb 24, 2017 Full Review Max Weiss Baltimore Magazine Not only did I love every silly, gothic, gorgeous minute of Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak, I'm actually suspicious of those who didn't. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 12, 2016 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times The set is spectacular, the cast is stellar, but Guillermo del Toro's haunted costume drama is short on drama - and scares. Rated: 3/5 Feb 25, 2016 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand Gothic romance with notes of horror, bathed in the unreal and magical colors of a baroque Italian horror and brought to life by Guillermo Del Toro’s beating heart of compassion in the face of evil. Nov 4, 2023 Full Review Emilie Black JoBlo's Movie Network This is a goth horror movie that is reminiscent of Hammer and other old timey studios, it’s goth horror that knows how to build a few scares, but mainly how to build attachments to the characters to make you feel their plight. Rated: 4.5/5 Nov 2, 2023 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast Crimson Peak doesn't entirely land its horror or romance elements, but the costume and production design, plus Jessica Chastain's villainous turn, are utterly sumptuous.
