      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Visceral and visually striking, Ralph Fiennes' Coriolanus proves Shakespeare can still be both electrifying and relevant in a modern context.

Jeffrey P Appears to be another remade Shakespeare manuscript, this time set in a modern fictitious warzone... I have problems with movies done in this manner, it's the dialogue, Shakespearean dialogue in a modern setting gets a big 'WTF?' from me when I first realize it's happening again. Looked like it might have been good had it not been in gibberish. The second half is easier to understand and follow than the first as dialogue becomes less important to conveyance of the narrative. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/24 Full Review Walter W The Audience reviews show zero understanding: Don't understand the Rome of Plutarch that influenced Shakespeare's image of it; how Shakespeare presented Rome to 5 centuries of students. I loved it, like I loved Titus with Anthony Hopkins. Like this they decided to go with modern imagery, of a fascist military monarchy. Machine guns and tanks along with shields and swords. That's a must see. Didn't get as highly rated as this one. That one is a gorey mess. Ralph Fienes keeps things highbrow. I can't stand audience reviews, y'all love Marvel and blockbusters and cant stand anything that breaks the mold. This one is still loaded with violence but it aint enough, need lasers. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/07/23 Full Review Megan e Really interesting interpretation of Shakespeare's Coriolanus! Good performances by everyone, but I was especially surprised by Butler. Normally I can't stand his movies, but he actually acted in this film. Worth watching once Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/10/23 Full Review Jelisije J One of the few films that is based on a Shakespearean play that I actually enjoy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/19/23 Full Review steve d Not one of my favorite Shakespear stories but well made and cleverly updated. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Keith S It's not an easy task to bring Shakespeare to life in a modern setting. I think they nailed this one. Ralph Fiennes delivered an amazing performance. Probably not for the casual fan, but I think people that love Shakespeare will love this film, as I did. Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express Coriolanus is a determinedly grim but smart, resonant film, faithful to the tone of the original, done with some skill and conviction. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 27, 2019 Full Review Monika Bartyzel The Atlantic It's genre writing that entertains while tapping into enduring truths. Apr 10, 2018 Full Review John Hartl Seattle Times The other actors do their best to help Fiennes define this curious anti-hero. Incapable of playing the role of peacetime compromiser, his Coriolanus comes across as a warrior who simply can't function without a war. Rated: 3/4 Jan 8, 2013 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies A unique and daring movie. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Scott Nye Battleship Pretension For those who take elemental pleasure from hearing Shakespeare's beautiful verse delivered this well, your evening will be well spent, and as a piece of drama, Coriolanus still packs a punch.
