Coraline is a novella for young readers by Neil Gaiman. It was published in 2002. The novella tells the story of Coraline Jones, who finds a doorway to a parallel, sinister otherworld inside her new home, and must battle the evil "Other Mother" who lives there to secure her family's safety. Coraline was Gaiman's first book marketed to young adults; however, Gaiman cited the Harry Potter books as having changed the literary landscape such that his book could be a horror novel for both children and adult audiences. Coraline was critically acclaimed as "magnificently creepy" in the tradition of a classic fairytale, and won numerous awards including the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award and the Bram Stoker Award. Since publication, the novella has been adapted into an Oscar-nominted stop-motion animated feature film, a comic book, an off-Broadway musical, and a video game.
