GR’s Gamble With RW

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

When Mahinda Rajapaksa’s plot to end aragalaya with mob violence misfired and ended in his own resignation, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa (GR) was left alone to face the mounting anger against the troubled regime. The beleaguered president looked for an escape route to deflect this anger away from him and picked Ranil Wickremesinghe (RW), at least to share that anger, and appointed him as replacement premier. RW had his own credentials to that position, not from his past career but from his recent performance in the parliament. Firstly, when there was strong demand for fresh elections for a new government from inside and outside the legislature, which could have ended in a historic rout for Rajapaksa’s SLPP, it was RW who persistently reminded the nation that it was not the right time for elections but time to join hands to revive the economy. Secondly, he was among the earliest to insist that MR government should approach IMF for assistance before situation became intolerable. Thirdly, he was calling for a reformulation of Sri Lanka’s foreign relations with stronger tilt towards India and the West without damaging relations with China. And finally, he was also talking about seeking help from a consortium of countries to get out of the dollar crisis. In sum, while other party leaders were prioritizing political change ahead of economic reparation, RW was taking an opposite view. His words were music to GR, and the President took the gamble in appointing WR as the new Prime Minister. As expected, the focus of criticism has begun to shift towards RW giving some badly needed respite to GR to plan his future moves. To that extent the gamble has worked. But will it produce political stability and economic relief?

On a positive note, however, there is fresh hope for additional economic support from international quarters. For instance, the US-India-Japan-Australia Quad, and within that Quad India and Japan in particular have come forward with special programs of assistance to overcome Sri Lanka’s immediate needs such as food, fuel and medicine. US for her part would be expected to work through IMF and World Bank to provide generous assistance. This new resolve from Quad is more geopolitical in intent than altruistic. Sri Lanka’s geographic location in the context of the US-China cold war, and China’s penetration deep into Indo-Pacific waters meant that the declining super power could not afford to sit tight watching Sri Lanka turning into a strategic theatre of action to China. The latest security deal between China and the Solomon Islands obviously had sent shock waves to the US and her allies in the region. To India especially, which has been practically surrounded by China along the northern border, any attempt to encircle her from southern waters would be deadly to India’s territorial sovereignty. Hence, India’s extra readiness to rescue the island’s economy. When looking from another angle, Sri Lanka’s economic crisis is a God’s end to India, because it provides a golden opportunity to drag the island into India’s zone of influence. Kachchativu may soon fall into India’s hands in return for economic assistance. In a way, India is now trying to recover what she missed to capitalize on opportunities that opened up soon after the civil war. It should also be noted in passing that the Sinhala Buddhist demagogues who endlessly preached anti-Indian hatred by exhuming buried memories of medieval Tamil invasions from the south, are now forced to eat humble pie and receive food charity from Tamil Nadu. This is history’s punishment for misreading and misusing its lessons.e Siunh

RW government has also built high hopes for assistance from IMF, World Bank (WB), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other international institutions. To these lending institutions, and to the first two in particular, what matters when a country approaches for assistance is not who governs that country but how efficient and clean its governance is. Therefore, subject to certain stipulated conditions, IMF would assist in overcoming balance of payments difficulties while WB would extend help for long term development projects. For the moment however, IMF had insisted that Sri Lankan authorities should pursue policies to achieve macroeconomic stability as precondition for assistance. Such policies would involve adoption of tight monetary policy with higher interest rates and flexible exchange rates, which the new CBSL Governor had announced already; undertaking fiscal reforms by way of increased taxes, cutting public expenditure and subsidies; and reforming loss-making public enterprises, among others. RW as the new minister of finance had announced some of these measures to be implemented from October 1st. Would these be enough for IMF to expedite assistance?

WB has denied agreeing to a $700 million bridging fund, but said instead, to consider, “repurposing resources from previously approved projects to help the government with some essential medicines, temporary cash transfers for poor and vulnerable households, school meals for school children of vulnerable families, and support for farmers and small businesses”. But to extend this assistance and receive funds from IMF, RW government should show evidence that it has an accountability mechanism in place to prevent the funds being wasted. This is where GR’s gamble to revive the economy through RW would fail, because the existing administrative mechanism is so rich in corruption that funds coming from outside are systematically siphoned off by intermediaries and they rarely reach in full intended destinations. This is a perennial problem and that is why aragalaya demands systemic change, which IMF and WB are aware of. Quite a number of the present 225 in parliament are past masters in benefiting from foreign help.

On top of these is the issue of debt sustainability and debt restructuring. This is going to be an expensive and drawn-out affair that may delay IMF assistance by months if not a year at least. Whether IMF would release some emergency funds before that without an overhaul of existing local distributive agencies as part of a systemic change is doubtful. Even with such funds, economic recovery in the medium or long-term is not guaranteed. RW is completely silent on accountability mechanism while proposing a number of commissions and committees, which are time consuming devices unaffordable in present context. A government without a mandate from people would not have the strength to change the system. Aragalaya demands systemic change.

The immediate headache for RW government therefore is the aragalaya, which had gone beyond its fiftieth day of its existence, and its momentum and longevity set to grow once the interruption from public examination season is over. With the expected entry of trade unions in support of aragalaya it is going to be a testing time for the new regime. Although GR and RW had sanctimoniously expressed willingness to allow the struggle to continue and Gothagogamas be left untouched as long as they remain peaceful, yet, their inner wish and resolve is to bring them to an end as soon as possible. Aragalaya lacks effective leadership at the moment. Whether political parties like JVP/NPP and FSP or the trade unions would provide such leadership is not clear yet. With an effective leadership aragalaya would present a formidable challenge political stability in days to come.

Finally, no one knows what countermoves that China has under its sleeves to checkmate the Quad in Sri Lanka. Having invested so heavily in infrastructure development in the island China is not going to walk away that easily. Earlier, to counter Indian moves in the north of the island, China tried to test the waters in Jaffna to win support of Tamils but was rebuffed by TNA stalwarts. Lately, the Chinese Ambassador in Colombo and his entourage had visited Batticaloa in the east with 10,000 food packages, met local Tamil leaders, discussed possibilities of economic aid to the region, visited a mosque even and had stressed the need for inter-ethnic cordiality knowing very well simmering tensions between Muslims and Tamils in that region. What really lies behind these moves should unfold soon.

Will GR’s gamble with RW succeed in bringing political stability and economic revival? To answer this question, let me end this piece with a quote from the former President of US, Ronald Regan: “you aint seen nothing yet”.

There is one glaring trait in Ranil Wickramasinghe ……… he has destroyed everything he touched ………

He singlehandedly reduced UNP to zero ……… after 30 years of utterly unsuccessful leadership he is still hanging on ……..

    For what?

Can he magically do something he has been unable to do so far?

Rajapakses wouldn’t have got away with murder and the loot ………. if the UNP had an electable leader.

Ranil is getting the country to pay for being born a loser

I believe it was started by one man campaign group (Letterhead Campaigner), Tamils for Biden.

There were Tamils for Hillery, Tamils for Obama, … etc all known to have just one member.

Only talent the Lankan politicians have, is the ability, to create in the public view/mind that they are important.

This is done with pomp, heightened-security, dress, honourable-names, Mandeeras/mansions …….. Pomp and ceremony is created around them by themselves and their paid and public-privileged/perked lackeys

According to him, the hardest thing Gota had to ever do in his life, is to ask Mahinda to vacate ….. couldn’t let Mhahinda just sit there, doing nothing, enjoying all the perks ……… to hell with the country and the people ……. the people can starve as far as the Rajapakses/pols care ……

In the near future the country/people will be shown who is important …….. the people who do the real work out there and keep the country running …….. the farmers, the fishermen, the drivers, the mechanics, the plumbers, the electricians ……….. Any politician can fall dead tomorrow it won’t affect me one iota ……. but if my mechanic, plumber, electrician …… fall dead I know I’ll feel it ………….

All the frigging do-nothing pols and the parasitic clergy can fall dead tomorrow ….. the society wouldn’t be affected an iota ……. will go on without missing a beat …….

This is the nature of politicians in south Asian region the only person that took all risk was Imran khan but corrupted and illiterate dominated folks led Pakistan did nt let IK be reelected. The same was the case in slanka though it is 20 times tinier than Pakistan. Wankwers and real crooks were made like powerful men in sl politics. Consequences are before the eyes today.
. The failure lies on the people/ their representatives are the politicians/

Just to get the attention/ media and people complain on maniok eating/ or nothing to eat/ but the truth is nobody would starve not eating rice in a tropical country.
        .
Whole lot of Europeans struggle for their cost of living/ they would never say that what they eat. No matter a sandwich could be the meal they just dont care. Our people define their staple as rice and curry only. They place for eating them above anything else. This is the identical thinking of stupid people led south asia. Attitudes can save their lives

      Nimal Fernando,
Please if you don’t have anything valuable to say, then it is best to keep your mouth shut (no offence; MODERATORS- please don’t take my comment down). I read all of your comments thinking that you would have a somewhat valuable input, but you don’t. You sound like one of those toddlers who scream at everything without any reason at all. You are just opposing for the sake of doing it and has no real argument.
“he has destroyed everything he touched ………”
What? What has he destroyed? “destroyed everything” is something a person who don’t know what that everything would say. As far as I know, he is build many things.
      – He took steps to develop the former war-zones by touring the affected areas and met civil activists to discuss the issues faced by the Jaffna civilians and to uplift Northern Province communities and to improve their standard of living.
      – Wickremesinghe also restarted the Megapolis plan which he started in when he was PM in 2001–2004. Surbana was consulted to revise the master plan to suit newer needs.
-The Ministry of Megapolis and Western development was created for project and the project which expects to convert the currently unplanned Western Province into a major megapolis by 2030 with an estimated population of 8.4 million and expects to solve the issues concerning traffic congestion, waste management and slum dwellers in urban areas.

        “What? What has he destroyed?”

        Start with the UNP.

I’ll let you answer that. ……… if you give a good answer, I’ll shut up forever. :))

Everyone wants to shut me up …….. stand in line behind Sinhala_Man.

Did I touch someone’s raw nerve? Did I inadvertently blurted out some truth?

What matters is not a list of things he is supposed to have done ……. but the results people can see. Where are the results of the good things he is supposed to have done?

Everyone has lists! Did you see Gota’s list before the election? …….. And his medals!

The UNP is there for everyone to see. He did a swell job with the UNP! ……. No one could’ve done better! :))

To me, today’s srilankens are the ones that would not think twice to have their Milk and honey keeping it in a funeral place. No matter anyone would say anything. They are such indifferent and ignorants of high magnitude. The deterioration of the society is beyond all estimation: Parents are helpless before the youth – media is to be blamed….. mlechcha media should be bombarded to usher a better and people s friendly era again – that will be the real revolution for a new SRILANKA.

Ranil will keep his trump card if GR gample he will use it, He will say he will resign RW ability is shining now he wants to show he is important now , GR wants him in part of him as blame will be shared if anything goes wrong and will use him as an arrow.

Ranil is not as crooked as Rajapaksas are. But he is more responsible for our plight than Rajapaksas are. If Aragalaya fades away, it would be not because of Gota but because of Ranil.

      Nathan,
“Ranil is not as crooked as Rajapaksas are.”
      —-
      Are you kidding?
Ranil was pretending as ‘Mr.Clean’ but he is a bigger crook than Rajapakshes. After he became the PM in so called ‘Yahapalana’ Government, he took the Central Bank under his control which is normally under the Ministry of Finance, decided to bring one of his buddy who is a crook from Singapore to be appointed as the Governor of CB despite strong objections from people in the Government giving an assurance that he takes the responsibility for his decision, master minded the ‘Bond Scam’ and swindled public money and allowed his buddy to escape with his share of the loot.
If Gotabhaya kept his promise to punish those who are responsible for the ‘Bond Scam’, Ranil should be in Welikada with Ranjan wearing jumpers instead of running around as the PM pretending that he is the one who can take this country out of the present crisis created by him and his ‘Royal Gang’.

      • 12

        Eagle Eye,
        * … but he is a bigger crook than Rajapakshes.
This an admission that Rajapaksas are themselves crooks!
        * … If Gotabhaya kept his promise …
Gota just not fail to punish Ranil but went on to make him the Prime Minister.
There is logic in it. Set a crook to save a bigger crook!
        .
You would have noticed that I had blamed Ranil more. You know why.
Because that lesser crook let the bigger crooks live another day to rob us further!

Nathan, Ranil is a stupid crook while Rajapakshas are smarter crooks.

        .
I think it was the 30 year old war ruined the nation . How nan y of UNP leaders were killed. So the lack of leaders were interpreted as the failure of RW.
Very same was the case with so called BOND SCAM. Rajapakshe bps were the architect s of the system failure/ I challenge to prove the other way around!!!! We are ready to organise international auditors if u are ready. Why Sorysena never allowed those forensic reports recommendations be aware to the nation. Not only Sorysena but GOTA had the bravery to do so. RW believed the truth- and that is why he is confident today / that is interpreted as him being Nariya. To me all leaders abused their power/ but Rajapakshe did it as if an amok runner did it.
        .
But the truth is if RW was the architect of bond scam/ why on earth Rajapakshes did nt extradite Arjuna Mahendran within ladt 3 powerful years. JVPres risked putting the entire blame on UNP because they thoght it was the high time them to take the revenge on 89-enemy. However they were marginalised even if they enjoyed the crowds as usual. 🐃🐃🐃🐃🐃🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕☹☹☹☹☹☹

Aragalaya youth and their fight is similar to that of mine/ but they should nt follow Peratugami/ JVPNPP/.
Aragalaya slogans should be not mixed up with NPPers or Peratugami.
          .
Love to see some powerful artists the way how they sacrifice their hours today being with the Aragalaya youth. However the men like JCkson Anthony or the like men that were highly instrumental putting pimps as saviors of the country calling them as the relatives of lord buddha are still silent. .
          .
See the danger of fake public perception/
Main strem media of this country should be destroyed I’d wanting to palpable changes of the society. That ll be the only solution. Derana TV owner with his staff should be subjected to a public execution/ then people will have to realise as to why Dele6 Jayaweera was executed. 🐕🐃💪😎☹😶

LM, “…..How nan y of UNP leaders were killed. So the lack of leaders were interpreted as the failure of RW…..”

Couldn’t agree with you more!! I do not know who killed Lalith but if LTTE did not bump down Premadasa, Gamini and Ranjan, SL would be a MUCH different country today! I do not say those men were the cleanest politicians of them all, but they would definitely not bankrupt the country, and heaps better than these third class rogues who are born to rob, even the beggars in the Lipton circus!!

            J
You said: “I do not say those men were the cleanest politicians of them all”. Nothing could be truer.
            But for character:
Premadasa got Richard de Zoysa killed and very probably Lalith.
Lalith and Gamini played dirty with Premadasa and showed us what petty nasty creatures they were.
Lalith wanted to starve Jaffna with a naval blockade which provoked a string of events. Have you heard his definition of a ‘terrorist’?
Gamini made so much money that JRJ reportedly commented “Gamini, I knew that you are rich but no so rich”. Also he likes burning buildings that house books when he is not making money.
Ranjan’s killing was not possible without insider information. Anyway, he was not a political leader.
So much for your UNP hopefuls.
            *
            BTW
When did you last visit Lipton Circus? Not the best place to beg though in the past two decades.

HONESTLY SJ, please tell me what the heck Richard De Soyza did ever do for St=ri Lankans???

First of all please pardon me for saying that because every human life is worth equally same, no doubt!. But this 30 year old debate about RDS really agitates me!!

Because no one DARE to write anything about Lasantha Wickramatunge who quite boldly exposed most of the corruptions Chandrika, Mahinda and Gota did between 19996 – 2015. Under the pseudonym Suranimala, he exposed almost all the rotten deals of those threesome on a regular basis in his Sunday Leader.

And he paid the price with his life…!!!!

What did Richard did ever expose??? What was his contribution to SL society??

A handsome, good looking, bearded, English educated Thomian is more important to you than a journalist who truly scarified his life on behalf of all Sri Lankans????

And more people, like you, talk about RDS than LW….for what??????????????

                Let us get something clear.
Does doing nothing for Sri Lankans make one eligible for brutal killing?
                *
He was a very much liked journalist, author, human rights activist and activist.
He did something unimaginably horrible: he staged a play satirising the then president.
                *
I am not comparing people here.
Did I ever defend Lasantha’s foul murder?
                *
Do you have a priority list for defending the right of one to his/her life?
Sorry, I do not have one, and am relieved that I do not share your values.

SJ, No need to diabolically twist my words to make your point! It was not a comparison of the value of two human lives cuz I did say it was not the value of Richard’s life that I question. I questioned why the general public, particularly the middle class educated crowd talk much about RDS than LW despite the latter conducting heaps of research [and publishing them in both English and Sinhala languages every Sunday] on the mega corruptions of CBK and this gang!

“….He did something unimaginably horrible: he staged a play satirising the then president…..”

Oh really??? Unimaginably horrible??? How many Gunapalas, Punchi Appus and Heenmenikes knew about his ‘unimaginably horrible’ satirical talents??

                    PART ONE

                    Jit,
                    .

This is what you said because I described my journey to Colombo on that fateful day, Monday 9th, May, 2022:
                    .
                    Jit / May 10, 2022
                    .
“SM, why do you seriously think that CT readers are interested in reading where you go or your train travel itinerary or that you are traveling in elite ‘First Class’? Is there any limit foo your nativity? Snobbery??? What is going on in your brain when you write that rubbish!!! That people are interested in your blinking daily chores? What is next?? Telling us the time you brush your teeth or going to the toilet?????”
                    .
I have asked you why you read it all.
                    .
                    It’s all here:
                    .

Looking at all that now, there are some significant things that I have said about the reactions of some people that day. Unfortunately, the comments have not got arranged in chronological order.
                    .
Before you told me that, I had explained, on the 9th (but you may have seen it only later) that what got me in to the First Class compartment was “a pensioner’s railway warrant”.

                    PART TWO
                    .
I knew that the word “robot” had come from the Czech language, so the final letter had to be articulated. However, Colombo guys, like you, imagined that it came from French, and the result is that even today the word is pronounced in Sinhalese without the final “t”.
                    .
The problem for me disappeared when Richard began to read the news. After he was heard pronouncing it correctly the problems for me disappeared. I never tried to ask people why I had been sniggered at (I noticed!) when I said the word correctly.
                    .
                    I never met Lasantha Wickrematunga.
                    .
In December 1984, I worked closely with Richard on a production which we put on at the Lionel Wendt.
                    .
During the period when we were rehearsing the plays (we were not in the same play, but we interacted a good deal) I got to know Richard reasonably well, albeit for a short period. He was simple, down to earth, and would discuss even how he was doing something with me. True, it was that I was ten years older, but then, as far as the University was concerned, I was thought to be from Bandarawela M.M.V.

                    1

                    PART THREE
                    .
We didn’t have a great run, or attract large audiences (the Wendt seats only 600 in any case, although I remember the days when it was only 400, before the balcony was added). Lalith Athulathmudali didn’t want the production to succeed. Racism! Revantha Sinnetamby was directing our play, “The Loneliness of the Short Distance Traveller”, by a Tamil, Ernest McIntyre. Revantha’s mother had been Sinhalese; I don’t think that knew much Tamil. People knew very well that Richard’s mother was Tamil. Ravi John was Tamil, although he, too, may have known less Tamil than Sinhalese. He, perhaps, was a guy who couldn’t bring himself to acknowledge that I had a pretty sound background in English – after all I’m such a Provincial guy! He had been in the Sinhalese medium at St Joseph’s. Then there was Renuka Jeyaraj, another Tamil name, but I think that her better language was Sinhalese. Lastly, there was Qadri Ismail, a Muslim!
                    .
The other play was “A Somewhat Mad and Grotesque Comedy”. Richard directed it, and acted in it. I can now remember only one other in the cast of that: Irangani Gunasinghe (daughter of the Labour Leader, A. E. Gunasinghe).

                    1

                    PART FOUR
                    .
Everything possible was done to sabotage the production. And the guy behind that was Lalith Athulathmudali.
                    .
By the time Richard was murdered I was once more an English teacher in an Omani village. It didn’t matter how much one knew, if you were “A Rafeek” (supposedly friend in Arabic, but really considered a menial) you were sent to a distant village. My salary was also lower than that of Egyptians who knew little, but had a great opinion of themselves.
                    .
It is too late to investigate again the murder of Richard, but I hope that we get somewhere with Lasantha. I’ve been following with admiration all that his daughter, Ahimsa, has been doing. I don’t feel any need to compare the two. How childish!
                    .
I know that this is going to be pretty long, but many of these things are not known. I hope this also indicates to you, Jit, how much of a joke many of the things that you say to me are! I also hope that you never become the President of Lanka; you’re a good guy, in many ways, but more opinionated than Gota!
                    .

Dear Jit and all other true souls.
            .
I think if Rajapakshes were intelligent AT LEAST to the levels of honey badges,
they could do lot more for this ultra stupid dominated srilanka. How many times, buggers were given the chances to do the job.

Our people are champions to forget things easily. As you articulated it, our leaders are not the cleanest politicians, – the vaccum left behind was the biggest problem of UNP. Considering all these, I would not attack RW as many others would do.
            .
And the notorious legacy left by SENIOR Premadasa was not easily erasable.
Now Mahinda s wife has taken over the ROLE of then Hema Premadasa- with many saying that vicious woman would need to walk through colombo tomorrow in order to loose her weights -… and RAJAPAKSHE-POLICE has deployed over 200 policists to give her guard.
Aragalaya BOYS, go to that place and demolish and teach them a lession again. I would be happier, that vicous would be thrown into BAIRA lake….considering all the high FRAUDs she deliberately made having swollen of stolen GOLDs from the Notherners.

Jit, I’ve never been convinced that the LTTE killed Premadasa.  Really, wheels within wheels there.  For several reasons.
On running into Bradman Weerakoon some weeks after the assassination — he had been abroad at the time — he voiced bewilderment.  Said it didnt make sense.  Premadasa had been giving the LTTE so much that they asked for.

And why was the site almost immediately cleaned up, without any investigation?  Even while a special team from Scotland Yard (or wherever) was here, looking into a previous killing?

Then there were press reports that Premadasa’s body was unidentifiable.  But I remember distinctly a photograph of him in the papers soon after, in which his face was clearly identifiable.

I cant remember if there were later investigations (under CBK?), but I would really be interested in the findings.  I have my own suspicions but better keep them to myself in present circumstances.  And  somehow (maybe I am too naive) I cant quite believe that such a person would go as far as murder.  But maybe that’s why I’m not a politician, tho politics concern me so closely.

If you do not believe that the LTTE did not have a hand in killing Premadasa, you will have even less reason to believe that it was responsible for killing Rajeev G.
              *
Do not look for much logic in the doings of the LTTE.
The LTTE fell out with Premadasa over some issues, but more importantly they also saw in him a political threat.

SJ – OK, but wasnt the instantaneous cleansing of the site strange, to say the least? Anyway, I guess there’s no point trying to work out who did it, after all these years. At the time I was puzzled by many other killings laid at the LTTE’s door and the JVP’s — I think I even wrote something about the latter at the time.

            • 3
              1

Manel, I get where you coming from. True, the grapevine was quite-a-biz at that time in the country especially in Colombo circles that it was not the LTTE that killed RP. Many believed his assassination was connected to Lilith’s murder in which RP was implicated in, but he was determined to clean his name on the May day speech and the ‘real’ murderers got into action and so on……

As I said I am not sure who killed Lalith cuz LTTE’s definitive trademark; suicide bomb was not there (similar to Kadir’s murder – does it rings a bell?? ha…haaa ;), so I believe RP’s assassination could most probably be done by the LTTE. Besides, LTTE never trusted RP despite his ‘donations’ to them and VP always made sure to destabilize the political leadership in the south for they thrived in political chaos. Yes, your suspicion why the site was cleaned quickly is very valid, and also the other points which I have heard too. May be yes, there could be another side, but I have more suspicions on Lalith and Kadir’s assassinations. One was done by a lone gunman and the other one by a sharp sniper – both are freely available at ‘major establishments’ in the south, aren’t they? ;)

                1

Jit, I dunno about Kadirigamar’s murder, but I think Lalith’s was pretty obviously not by the LTTE….& the ID card was clearly planted.

What long periods of such killings we have endured.
And yet a non-violent, largely peaceful flowering came out of all these terrible years to occupy Galle Face Green & throw down a challenge to the very elements that seek to repeat & perpetuate their vile domination.

                Go, Gota, GO!
And take with you every single member of your govt who is guilty of corruption, violence, racism, or even worse.
And in future every party must undertake to ensure that it doesnt foist seriously tainted candidates upon the voters.
I am heartily sick of having to choose the “better” of two evils!

Now, I’m not quite sure what drove me off on a tangent like that. Perhaps it was the memory of Lalith about whose devious racist strategy in the referendum I was recently reading about again. He introduced the slogan
“A Vote for the POT is a Vote for EELAM!”
And within months we had Black May and July.

We have to merely fall back on the basics, i.e. tea, rubber, coconut, tourism, and manual workers in richer countries. No other way around it. We have to work ourselves up from there. Only the JVP can fulfill this scenario in keeping Sri Lanka honorable and with some decency. Country can save face this way.

Ranil-Gota government don’t have a clue on how to implement this socialist policy which is the only one available at this time. So immersed were they, in the global supra-capitalistic enterprise that toning it down will not go well with their mental states, and drive them even madder; the suffering country at their brunt.

China used our Motherland to dabble in alternate economic networks. Rajapaksa & Pottuwa-party placed most of it on things like Crypto. We all know now that Crypto has crashed. China lost too, as we can’t pay back our loans to them. It was a learning experience and calculated risk for them, but the ultimate demise for Motherland in the global capitalistic arena.

Since Mao’s b***s carriers wants China to rule the world China being benevolent at the same time civilised in its diplomatic, cultural and business dealings will definitely write off the loans only if this island transfers a large part of its sovereign (whatever that is) territory, just like the Hambantota harbour.

According to Mao’s red book China will grab land only on a piece meal basis (except Hindian) until Mao’s b***s carriers are happy and contented.

“It should also be noted in passing that the Sinhala Buddhist demagogues who endlessly preached anti-Indian hatred by exhuming buried memories of medieval Tamil invasions from the south,..”

Anti-Indian hatred among Sinhala Buddhists is mainly because of the role played by India to promote Tamil terrorists who massacred Sinhala Buddhists for three decades to grab land belong to indigenous Sinhalayo in NE to create a separate State for Tamils and imposing 13th Amendment that created Provincial Councils which is a ‘White Elephant’ that drained Sinhala tax payers money that could have been utilized for more productive purposes.

      Eagle Eye,

“Anti-Indian hatred among Sinhala Buddhists is mainly because of the role played by India to promote Tamil terrorists”

India has a bad reputation all over the world. Did you know, Google tried to ban one of their Youtube news channels for spreading false propaganda? India is really the lowest of the low… despite its faults, the Chinese/Confucian-Buddhist culture is 100x superior. The only good thing to come out of India are a few Brahmins, yet these people are only a handful. Very interesting that supporters of the fake freedom struggle (Sri Lanka) think India is some kind of hero. This shows their low intelligence and desperation. The worst situation for Sri Lanka is to align with India long-term.

        1. Fertilizer ban doesn’t make a difference

        2. Protests should be against China, since 30% of Sri Lankan GDP comes from tourism (demolished by COVID-19).

        4. Sri Lanka should consider selling land in the North and East to China to pay off debt.”

MK Stalin (the Chief minister of Tamil Nadu) not only insulted and wounded Eezham Tamils’ sentiment and hearts but also belittled their fair and natural aspiration by agreeing to meet Milinda and the publicise it in the open.

Milinda made war under and genocide possible in the guise of peace to which Hinidans and RAW are primary partners of sori Sinhalam.

Now, Milinda is openly advocating and working to eliminate the nothing called 13th.

The Chief Minister must have condemned in the strongest possible language who ever ( I think it is Hindi and RAW bastards at behest of Milinda) and when the meeting was sought.

The Chief minister has become pawn in the Hindi, RAW and sori Sinhala game of facilitating the completion of genocide of the remaining Tamil population.

KA I fully agree with you, the chief minister of Thamizh Nadu, as well as most of the elite and politicians in Thamizh Nadu, really do not care two hoots about the Eezham Thamizh. Just play lip service but if you look at all their actions. overtly and overly support the racist Chingkalla state. Most probably they realize that it is not the Eezham Thamizh but the present-day Chingkallams, who are their descendants, and DNA also now confirms this. This is the reason they were the only Indian state who provided a lot of food and aid to the Chingkallams. No other Indian state, West Bengal, Odisha, Kerala, Andhra, Gujarat or North Indian state. Chingkallams love to state, that their ancestors originated from these states, especially Bengal and other North Indian states, despite history and DNA proving otherwise, but they cared two hoots, as they knew Chingkallams, despite trumpeting from the roof that they are closely related to them, are not. Thamizh Nadu is from where they largely originated and mommy came to help, despite the racist child-killing and committing large scale ethnic cleansing and structural genocide on fellow Thamizh on the island. Mommy love is stronger than any other bond.

            • 10
              8

Stalin was giving all this aid on behalf of India and spoke only on behalf of India, urging Modi only to start the process of returning Kachchathhevu to Thamizh Nadu/India, and the right for Thamizh Nadu /Indian fishermen and bottom trawlers to fish in northern Sri Lanka waters without hindrance. Not a word or recommendation about the plight of the fellow Eezham Thamizh, regarding returning their lands illegally occupied by the Armed forces and Chingkallams. Converting ancient Hindu temples to Buddhist places of worship, or implementation of sec 13a with land and police rights. Proving they are hypocrites only concerned about the welfare of India, Indians and what is good for India and Eezham Thamizh can go to hell. Just sent the link to these two anti-Thamizh racists living overseas, to prove who is now feeding the Chingkallams and their actual origin. Even if you hate and scold mommy. Mommy always comes to help.

KA and PK, I partially agree with what your views but not all. Stalin is the chief minister of Tamil Nadu and his first priority is the rights and welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu and then others. There is nothing wrong with what he requested from Modi with regards to Kachchateevu and this should not be considered as being anti-Sri Lankan Tamil. Indira Gandhi had no right to have given Kachchatheevu to Sri Lanka, just because Srimavo was her friend and she had a good relationship with her. She just gives it during some tea party. This is not some personal property or her family heirloom for her to give this island, that has historically belonged to the Zamindar of Ramanathapuram and was part of modern Tamils Nadu. She never consulted the people of Tamil Nadu, nor was this act ratified by the parliament of Tamil Nadu or the Indian Central government parliament.

Eagle Thatha, there is no history anywhere of Thamizh from South India invading en masse and displacing Chingkallams living in the north and east and the Chingkallams forced to move further south. On the contrary, even your anti-Thamizh Mahavamsa constantly refers to the lands in the north and east of the island as Thamizh lands. It is Chingkallams now using fake concocted history and the power of the state and armed forces, are now stealing the lands of the Eezham Thamizh in the north and east. Everything old and ancient in the north and east is Thamizh, even the ancient Buddhist ruins. These are Thamizh Buddhists, not Chingkallam as now falsely claimed by the Sri Lankan state so that they can settle Chingkallams on Thamizh land. On a lighter note, you can waltz with your Thamizh wife listening to this song. Hope this will soothe all the hatred you have in your heart. If you do not like the Thamizh version, you can waltz to the original Telugu version.

Sri Lankan people are trapped now by both international super powers and internal super rich families power hungry. If we look at the internal power competition SLFP was destroyed by Rajapaksa family and UNP was destroyed by Ranil Family. Rajapaksa family now realised that there is a danger for their existence in politics and Ranil Family also realised that their existence in politics. Now people are angry with the Rajapaksa family primarily because all of their actions are failed and lead to the bankruptcy and now try to keep at least the most powerful executive power under their family control. In Sri lankan politics, opporunism is well established and that is why they decided to bring Ranil temporarily to reduce the impact of economic crisis and some political crisis such as re arrest of Duminda again, action against BBS Monk and even to reduce powers such as dual citizenship cannot become MPs. However, Rajapaksa will keep the same old MPs in parliament for next three years. Within that three years if RW make some improvement to reduce the economic crisis, they can remove RW on the grounds of Bondscam with the support of their MPs. In otherwords, it may be an end to RW?

The players are still the same, their selfish ambitions are still the same, their corrupt ways are still the same, so don’t expect miracles Sri Lanka. We can never raise our heads until they are all gone.

It seems after all the kissing up to China, and even with their foothold here, China was missing in action, either indifferent to our plight, or just wanted us to sink. You only know who your true friends are when you are in trouble.

“It should also be noted in passing that the Sinhala Buddhist demagogues who endlessly preached anti-Indian hatred by exhuming buried memories of medieval Tamil invasions from the south, are now forced to eat humble pie and receive food charity from Tamil Nadu.”

Mostly 40,000 tonnes of rice primarily for people in Tamil areas. This “donation” was a political gimmick by DMK minister Stalin. The Sri Lankan government has secured $3.5 billion assistance from the Indian government to buy food, fuel, etc. Anyway, has the forgotten the LTTE’s treatment of Muslims in Jaffna, Batticoloa, etc? They were given 24 hours to pack up and leave while the LTTE confiscated their gold, land, and other property. It is only because of the “Sinhala Buddhist demagogues” who won the war, that Muslims can return to these places. Anyway, I am a supporter of the Muslims. GOSL should give them federalism to p-ss off the Eelamist buggers. Some Muslims served well in the SLA.

I hope so, especially in the southern Chingkalla areas where 72%of the island’s Muslims live. Eg Marathanai, Slave Island, ThematKoadu, Kampalai, Akurana, Puttalam, Peruvallai ( both essential). All these contiguous and non-contiguous Muslim majority areas, in the Chingkalla south, makeup around 10-15% of Chingkalla lands and should become a special Islamic federal unit, as per Jester the London Goose’s recommendation. Why stop with the coastal Amparai strip, starting from Kalmunai south to Sainathamaruthu in the east? As the only Islamic federal unit? It also can be added as part of a special Islamic federal homeland created throughout the island. They will all be grateful to Jester and will in honour of him make ” Goosey goosey gander ” their anthem.

You are a racist and extremist living the good life in the west and really not a friend of the island’s Muslims, and like most Chingkalla extremists are only using them, as a tool to marginalize and discriminate against the island’s Thamizh, especially in the east, and deny the Thamizh their just rights. Used Islamic extremists, politicians and others to do it, and everyone knows, who is behind the Easter Bombings, not ordinary Muslims. Most Muslims also are now fully aware of Chingkalla racists and politicians who use them, as a tool to destroy Thamizh, promising all sorts of rewards and then discarding them and committing all sorts of violence against them. Sri Lankan Muslims or Moors may have a different identity, based on their religion but remember they are ethnically Thamizh with a dash of Arab or other western. Afghan or North Indian ancestry amongst 10% of them.

        • 17
          15

Giving a federal set-up to the island’s Muslims who only arrived on the island a few centuries ago from South India, will force the government to provide a Federal set-up for the island’s Thamizh who have lived on the island for over 3000 years and ruled their lands in the north and east until European colonization. You will not be able to get away with it and be forced to do it by the international community and this will be the entire north. most of the east. The Nuwara Eliya district as well as large parts of greater Colombo and the northwest coast. What is good for the Goose is good for Gander too. Good on you Jester. Keep up your rantings. Ra Ra Ra.

“You are a racist and extremist living the good life in the west and really not a friend of the island’s Muslims, and like most Chingkalla extremists are only using them, as a tool to marginalize and discriminate against the island’s Thamizh”

As long as the Parliament is 95% Sinhala-Buddhist, and the Cabinet is 95% Sinhala-Buddhist, a Muslim President will have limited powers. Neglecting the Executive Presidency, which the protesters want to get rid of. It is better to have a Muslim president than go through all the motions of “federalism”, “provincial councils”, etc. etc.

“Giving a federal set-up to the island’s Muslims who only arrived on the island a few centuries ago from South India, will force the government to provide a Federal set-up for the island’s Thamizh.”

As long as you are represented by Sampanthan and TNA in the government, the only future for Tamils in the North and East is continued military occupation. You need to denounce the fake freedom struggle. Stop these nonsense “genocide” resolutions in other countries. Diaspora ruined the future for SL Tamils, not the Sri Lankan government.

          • 17
            8

Yawn, instead of repeating the same racist rubbish again and again. Please say something more intelligent. You do admit you really do not want to give anything substantial to the island’s Thamizh Muslims but some token federalism, that has no power, to keep them in check and use them as a tool to destroy the Thamizh and deny them justice. Power should only be in the hands of Chingkalla Buddhists only. Thank Britain for this. As on your own steam, it could not have happened. Still would have been ruled by kings and aristocrats from Thamizh Nadu. Oh by the way hope your relatives back home, enjoyed all the food and other essentials, that were provided to them by Thamizh Nadu? Remember however much you hate mommy, she always comes to your aid.

              15

You are barking here while missing my main point. Muslims will outnumber Tamils as the 2nd largest demographic within the next 10-15 years. UK Muslim population doubled in just 10 years (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/feb/11/muslim-population-england-wales-nearly-doubles-10-years). Sinhalese don’t want to live in Jaffna, Batticaloa, etc. New generation is too lazy to become settlers. Some past governments tried that and LTTE murdered the settlers with axes and machetes, e.g. Dollar & Kent Farms. Muslims are different. They will live anywhere. They will need more land as their population grows, putting them into direct competition with Tamils, not Sinhalese. This time there will there be no Fat Pig, Norway, or Bruce Fein to help Tamils. I only hope I will be alive to see this “Great Replacement.”

              • 6
                2

However, you also missed a very crucial point. 72% of the island’s Muslims live in the Chingkalla south. Many live e very close to your ancestral lands in Kandy. These Muslims will hardly ever come and live in the Thamizh North and East and will not want to. They will be looking for lands to live in the Chinkalla south and not in Thamizh North, most probably close to Kandy from where your ancestors are from.

                • 5
                  2

Yes the Muslim population is increasing compared to others as the Chingkallam and Thamizh now tend to have two children and the Sri Lankan Thamizh birth rate is even lower, now below replacement level. Many people think this is because of the war and the horrible discrimination and marginalization that they face. Also remember the immigration rate for Eezham Thamizh was very high, almost 1/3 of them have left the island within 30 years and this has affected their population growth rate. That they are still around 11.7 % is a miracle. With all the killings, high migration and ethnic cleansing that took place. The Muslims do marry very young and produce more children but within a generation or two, this will also stop and their birth rate will stabilize and become like the rest of the population. 72% of the so-called high Muslim birth rate will be in the Chingkalla areas and they will be looking for lands there, so beware. Especially around Kandy. Thamizh owns most of the land in the east, you hardly find Muslims in the north and if Muslims want and they will have to purchase this from Thamizh, as, unlike the Chingkallams, the government hardly settles them on ethnically cleansed Thamizh lands. Please look after your lands in Kandy and Gampola instead of preaching to us. Muslims are fellow Thamizh.

I wonder if anyone can enlighten me. Is there an economic problem in SL ???
I do not mean to be insensitive. I have on very this site argued that I have seen an old woman and also a boy who was sick in Colombo for want of money haven emptied his purse for his mother’s cancer treatment. I am well aware of the suffering of the poor, and know that some who should be concerned say there is no problem. !
My point is that “economic problems” by definition are caused due to change in markets, resourecs ,natural disasters etc. The Sri lankan problem is cheating and mismanagement that is not properly addressed but covered up powerful people and their beneficiaries/supporters. International bilateral international organizations give loans subject to conditions promoting growth in an accountable lasses-faire economic model as far as possible. A rule of law is an integral part of this and a lack of this together with constant constitutional tinkering will put any lender off.Apart from ideological differences is there a reason for the “no questions asked loan” model to be preferred.? Do we talk of Western Hit man and Chinese debt trap to justify personal interests because we are comfortable.
Today someone said only” traitors” will not go to the IMF and a few months ago it was the “heros” who did not go.

Finally I have found something to support EE. That is about his view on Provincial Councils being a Tax burden on all the Sri Lankan citizens. What we need is a Federal state for North and East of SL. We need Ranil W to pass the 21st Amendment to drastically reduce the powers of the Executive President. He should also make SURE any member of the citizens of SL can contest the parliamentary elections only if that person has enough educational ability and HONESTY.

One must accept the fact that RW has not been the smartest politician Lanka has had. He has been in many a delusions. When GR appointed him, former would have known the fact that it was the solution to extend his stay as president while the challenge will be minimised. But I feel, if GR wants to solve some of the problems and save the skin he need to sacrifice a lot. Whole Rajapakse clan to start with. Not budge with their demands. It’s a credit to him that his own family is away from Lankan politics.
What GR needs to do is do away with the present constitution and presidential republic. But until he gets all the support to implement with the support of whole opposition and some from his party.
Create two level assembly, including one similar to olden days Senate. It should consists of Divisional elected representation (50%) and academicians, experts, industrialists, workers all of high integrity.
No single person to have sole say on any issue. All decisions must be taken through the parliament and approved by the upper house.
New constitution at least temporarily need to address and include measures of corruption and every possibility arising to corruption. Punishments should be unequal, increasing with the responsibility held by the culprit.

EE is absolutely correct. We need to put the “cart before the horse” ie the LTTE was not a creation of since independence of Ceylon the focus of the sinhalas being to emasculate and control the ceylon tamils. I recollect during a visit to Jaffna and there beings ome sort of demonstration the sinhala police officer telling the ceylon tamil unruly crowd, why are you tamils who are educated peoples resorting to this behaviour. No No the sinhalas behaviours towards the tamils were not the reason for the LTTE coming about. In addition it was not the sinhalas who burnt the Jaffna Lirary.
In addition the bankruptyc starvation and dearths in sinhala land has nothing to do with the Rajapakses incompetence and looting. It is because of the 30 years of war against the LTTE that resulted in facilitating the looting of the sinhala treasury by the sinhala Rajapakses.
In addition the recent sinhala whose boat was sent back by the Australian navy DID not say to Aussie journalists that they rather sweep floor and clean toilets in Australia that live in the “pearl of the Indian Ocean.
In addition it is not Tamil Nadu sending rice to sinhala toilet land. It is the Buddha who is doing it.
