Tuesday, November 15th the LA Clippers and Dallas Mavericks will meet for the first of four occasions this season. The Clippers will host again on January 22nd while the Mavericks will host on January 10th and February 8th.
The Clippers are completing a back-to-back set beating the Rockets 122-106 on Monday while Dallas last played Saturday getting back in the win column after two consecutive losses with a 117-112 defeat of the Blazers.
Last season, the squads played four times splitting the series with two wins each. The Mavericks hold the advantage all-time having won 97 times of the club’s 166 meetings.
LA Clippers
It’s hard to fully buy into the Clippers regardless of their record. They’re very streaky with most of their wins against lower-tier teams but then they’ll throw in an impressive win as they did against the Cavaliers.
Conversely, there is the baseball sweep at the hands of the Thunder — that no offense to LA, play with more consistency and an identity bettors can rely on being there night in and night out.
We keep getting these arbitrary reports from Ty Lue that Kawhi is progressing – playing against guys but conveniently missing is any clear delineation of when he’ll be back on the court. It seriously feels like we’re being gas-lit!
When he’s healthy and it’s winning time he is the closest thing to Michael Jordan since the GOAT graced the hardwood. All except in one major way – he’s an extremely SLOW healer.
This isn’t hyperbole. He suffered a hand injury early in his Spurs tenure with projections he’d miss a week/10 days (he was out over a month). I recall an article noted the medical team couldn’t figure out why he was experiencing unusual side effects (numbness, tingling, and pain).
Dr’s thought perhaps his abnormally large hands (11.25″ span/9.75″ long) were related to the issues and extended recovery time. In my humble opinion that set the benchmark for him taking longer than average to recover regardless of the injury and that’s proven accurate over time.
John Wall sat Monday for rest so presumably is available Tuesday. Kawhi Leonard (knee) remains out.
Dallas Mavericks
No team wins every game but watching HOW the Mavericks lost consecutive games to the Magic and Wizards punctuated just how hard it is for them to generate offense when Luka is having an off night or not controlling every aspect of the offense.
He looked gassed in the Magic game, in particular, shooting 9 of 29 and still netted 24 points plus Spencer Dinwiddie scored 29 but the team only amassed 87 total points.
Doncic followed up that effort by shooting 8 of 21 versus the Wizards for 22 points and this time Dinwiddie had 33, Tim Hardaway scored 16 and Dwight Powell offered his likely max of 14, and again – Dallas barely broke the century mark (105).
There is no doubt Doncic is capable of dropping 50 points in his sleep while dishing double-digit assists. BUT – what about the fatigue? If he’s going to carry this team and have the highest usage will he eventually just wear out?
Christian Wood is a nice addition but he can’t be on the court at crunch time because of his defense. Dinwiddie has essentially replaced Brunson’s production but someone has to replace HIS 2021-22 production.
2019 -20 was his best season as the primary scoring option he averaged 20 points (but required 16 shots to net them). He’s been great but it feels like the Mavs either need to add another star (ideally a two-way guy to fit Kidd’s schemes) or someone sort of like — ummm Jalen Brunson!

Free LA Clippers vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
What I expected to get from the Clippers squad and what we’re witnessing is opposite ends of the spectrum. Granted they’re missing Kawhi.
BUT — if the reason they got all this depth was to navigate his and Paul George’s absences then why does it feel like they don’t mesh at all?
This is the type of game where PG gets up for knowing the narrative will be PG vs. Luka. The problem is he won’t be the best player on the court – Luka will. Despite the Clippers’ depth (outside of Luka) the Mavs are offensively inconsistent but they still mesh better than LA, particularly on defense.
I’m givng the Clippers more credence to keep the score close but they are on the B2B — granted their most impressive win came in the same circumstance Cavaliers). So split the difference – take LA and the points but Mavs win.
