Outstanding Faculty
Making vehicles smarter and more sustainable is at the core of Ardalan Vahidi’s research. The professor of mechanical engineering was recently named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world’s largest technical professional organization. Vahidi’s focus on optimizing vehicle connectivity and autonomy anticipates upcoming energy demands. Through novel use of real-time optimization, his algorithms can prescribe motion plans that preserve energy in everyday driving scenarios, such as idling at urban intersections and dealing with stop-and-go traffic. Vahidi has worked alongside major manufacturers, including BMW, Ford and Cummins, and has led multiple federally sponsored projects to successful on-road demonstrations.

Student Discovery
As the leading cause of death in the United States, heart disease has impacted millions of Americans and their families. Among them is junior biochemistry major Thomas Caputo, whose paternal grandfather died from a heart attack when his father was 11 years old. Back home in New Jersey, his family is avid supporters of the American Heart Association, and Thomas wanted to bring that advocacy closer to campus. He founded the Clemson Heart Association, a student organization that aims to fundraise for heart disease awareness. The group has established a presence on campus and hopes to expand its reach by partnering with local businesses. It also supports the Upstate branch of the American Heart Association by participating in its events like walks for heart health.

The friendship between Rear Adm. George Bresnihan ’92 and Brig. Gen. Louis Mitchell ’91 began while the two were growing up in the West Ashley area of Charleston, South Carolina. The pair attended Clemson together and started their military careers soon after graduation, with Bresnihan joining the Navy and Mitchell commissioning into the Army Reserve. For the next 30 years, the men steadily climbed the ladder in their respective services, leaning on each other during hard times — including multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan — and knowing the other was just a phone call away when a new challenge arose. The two are Clemson Black Alumni Council members and have supported the scholarship efforts of the Snelsire, Sawyer, & Robinson Clemson Career Workshop, a summer college-readiness program for high-achieving students from diverse populations.
