Clem Cattini is the legendary drummer whose career spans over 60 years, beginning in the mid-1950s with Terry Kennedy's Rock and Rollers who played gigs across London, most notably at the 2i's Coffee Bar in Soho, before the band were asked to join up with Terry Dene for a nationwide tour. In 1960 Clem teamed up with Johnny Kidd and The Pirates, resulting in the classic recording of arguably Britain's greatest rock and roll record, Shakin' All Over.
Following on from the Johnny Kidd days, Clem became involved with maverick record producer Joe Meek. Needing a band to record demos in his Holloway Road 'studio', in reality the upstairs of a shop, The Tornados were formed, which led to the recording of the worldwide hit Telstar, the first British record to reach the number one spot in the American Billboard charts in 1963. (In the 2008 film of the same name, Clem was played by James Corden.) Tours backing Billy Fury followed, before Clem decided to call a halt to the incessant touring in 1965.
When an opportunity arose to play studio sessions, meaning he could still enjoy playing music without the hassles of being constantly out on the road, Clem jumped at the chance. Meeting up and drinking coffee in cafes in Denmark Street with the likes of guitarists Big Jim Sullivan and Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones, and drummers Bobby Graham and Tony Meehan, they were hired to put down the tracks for hundreds of hit records during those crazy days of the 60s and the 70s.
Clem's career included a decade as a member of The Top of the Pops Orchestra. He was approached for tours by numerous stars, as well as being headhunted for the band that would become Led Zeppelin, and also for Paul McCartney's Wings, both of whom he decided to politely turn down.
During his session days Clem played on recordings for artists as diverse as Cliff Richard, Ike and Tina Turner, Lou Reed, Lulu, Tom Jones, T. Rex and The Who, in the process racking up a mighty 42 No. 1 UK hit singles.
Set against the backdrop of cultural and social development of post-war Britain, Through The Eye Of A Tornado is an affectionate look back over an unparalleled career, with Clem and friends recalling the early days of the British rock and roll scene around Soho, the life of a session musician, and revealing the stories behind the some of the best-known music made in the UK over the past 60 years.

I enjoyed this book despite a few negative reviews. Sure it contains alot about the times around Cattini's life but there is an incredible story one can't find on the Net. Chances are one has heard Cattini's drumming without even knowing it . ( Myself included- like 30 records I have!!) In addition there are some records I didn't know that fellow session men ( actually Studio Musician) played on- Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Big Jim Sullivan to name a few. There isn't a list of Cattini's sessions- a complete one would be impossible. The book is what it is- A First Book on Clem Cattini' Life!

I’m lucky enough to know Clem, but the book tells some other fascinating stories of being a Rock ‘n’ Roller back in the day. It’s just incredible how many people got ripped off. And still are.

The stock response when anyone tells Clem he played on their first record or hit is, ‘Did I’. I could just sit at listen to him all day…..playing or talking.

Where do you start with a book like this. The authors must have had great difficulty in knowing what to put in and leave out and fortunatly for the reader they have got the balance dead right. Its a real page turner, I read it in a couple of sessions, its that good. Its certainly a richly deserved tribute to Clem Cattini and no more than the great man deserves. His contributions throughout the book are very enlightening. Its scope is wide and you will come away with perhaps less enthusiasim for some of your favourite artists from years gone bye as quite a few big names are revealed to be rather nasty pieces of work. Thankfully Cliff Bennett, my all time favourite comes over as one of the good guys, been a fan for over fifty years and counting. If you want a book charting the last fifty years or more of British and American pop music that has influenced this country you wont do better than this. Very highly recommended. Its a snip.

I really liked seeing into the music industry in the 60"s when the foundation for Rock n Roll, blues and "Pop" music was firmly established in the UK. I would have a liked more about Clem himself and maybe less about the artists and musicians doing similar things, having said that this was a very good read and anyone who has any interest in how modern music was established should enjoy this book.

Overall I enjoyed this book and would recommend it. However, I'd have preferred it to have concentrated solely on the music, the broader history lesson I could have done without. It was almost as if the non music references were there to flesh out the page count - a shorter more concise book would have been preferable. A proof reader to check facts (John Lennon didn't make the drummer joke about Ringo - it was Jasper Carrot) and correct the numerous grammatical errors would also have been a good idea.
Still worthwhile though.
