Clayton is a town located in the county of Barbour in the U.S. state of Alabama. Its population at the 2010 census was 3,008. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 2,829 inhabitants.

Clayton, Alabama is a town in Barbour County, Alabama. The population was 3,008 at the 2010 census, up from 1,475 in 2000. The elevation is 180 m. The area of Clayton is 17.56 km².

The town's namesake is William Clayton, who along with his brother established a store in 1832. They also built a home that was later used as a post office and then as the Barbour County courthouse. In 1866, the town of Clayton was incorporated by an act of the state legislature.

Clayton was founded as a railroad stop on the Montgomery and Eufaula Railroad. The town was named for John M. Clayton, Secretary of State under President James K. Polk. Clayton has been home to several industries over the years including the largest cotton gin in the world at one time and a large brick plant that is currently closed but still standing on Main Street near downtown. 

The first newspaper was established in 1901 by W.H. Bussey who also served as editor for many years until his death in 1941 when his son took over as editor until he sold it later on to Charles Williams who ran it until he retired in 1976 when he sold it to Jack Sessoms who ran it until selling it again in 1980 when Joe Bell took over ownership until selling it again in 1986.

The new county seat of Barbour County was incorporated in 1882; its first mayor was Henry J. Finney (1822–1896).

With an elevation of 180 meters above sea level, it's a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. You'll find plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking and fishing in this beautiful area.
