Spine Road Drop-off upgrade begins | The City’s Urban Waste Management Directorate will start upgrading the Spine Road Drop-off facility on Wednesday, 15 May 2024. During this time, the public may experience delays when visiting the site. |
The upgrade project involves maintenance to the surface of the ramp and installation of edge protectors or barricades for the protection of drop-off users. This is to ensure the safety of our residents while they are dropping off their waste items.

The upgrade is expected to last about seven weeks. During this time, the facility will remain operational, but users may experience some delays and disruptions. Residents can use alternative drop-off sites to avoid these possible delays. Swartklip and Schaapkraal facilities are the closest alternatives, however a full list of the City's drop-off sites can be found here. Please do not resort to dumping.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time. The City of Cape Town remains committed to providing efficient waste management services to its residents.

End

| 2024-05-15T22:00:00Z | | | | | | | 1 | | | |
Urban Mobility team works tirelessly to clean catch pit systems ahead of winter | The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate is dedicated to maintaining and ensuring the cleanliness of catch pit infrastructure as part of its efforts to prepare for winter. |

With the winter season approaching, the teams are actively involved in measures to mitigate flooding. Various cleaning methods are employed, including the use of truck-mounted jetting and vacuum machines to tackle extreme cases where stormwater pipes are clogged with soil, debris, and solid waste that are illegally dumped into the system.

Regular cleaning is essential to prevent the stormwater drains from overflowing and causing roads to flood. This task is undertaken diligently throughout the year across the city.

In addition to mechanical cleaning, manual labour plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness of catch pits. Teams, such as those in Capri, undertake daily cleaning of catch pits.

'Yesterday, we successfully cleaned 31 catch pits in the Noordhoek area alone. These ongoing efforts are vital in addressing blockages within the system and will ensure that flooding, as a result of blocked storm water drains, is prevented. As residents, we must be mindful of what goes down these drains as it comes back to affect us when these passageways are blocked and water dams our roads affecting driving conditions and our safety.
