Beautiful cinematography. Musical score . . . by Geoffey Burgon, whose Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy score is a landmark that is occasionally performed in concert. Marvelous acting -- Juliet Stevenson is wonderful in this role. This book is a British classic of 20th century & (I'm guessing) would be better known than it is if it weren't the case that Laurie Lee was rather openly bisexual, as is apparent from his writing -- especially if you get to the next two, in his personal chronology, after Cider with Rosie. The prudishness of many reviewers is quite remarkable. What about the openness of how he loved to be sleeping with his mum? Simply a beautiful movie about the passing of a time & kind of life that no longer exists, in Britain or maybe nowhere.

Once again if the movie is rated PG then why the child nudity? Disturbing and unnecessary. it is one thing to talk about it and quite another to have a ten year old child play a nude scene with an older boy looking on. I ended the movie. Badly done!!!!!!!

This is a story of a simpler time. The narrator is telling it as things happened in his childhood, it's what he wrote about, what happened in his life growing up in a very small English village post WW1. It is charming, sad, happy, surprising in places. He has a kind mother and three older sisters who adore him, and little brothers too. The father deserted the family when he was very small but they all survive as a family. Very nice story.

A sweet story about a brave women caring for her children and step-children after her husband abandoned his family. The setting was an English village starting as World War I was ending. The story was told from the eyes of the next to last child from the time he was about 3 years old until he leaves home. It was similar to John Boy telling a story in the TV series "The Waltons," but more sexy scenes.

There'll come a day when this movie, like some others, will fill you with wonder and the sense of time. Try not to cry too much, try to see it for the many charming and little things. 'A Month In The Country' is a worthy companion piece. Watch them both. Very well done.

I'm so glad I wasn't watching this with my kids. I hesitate to specify in case of creeps but, I guess they'll already find stuff where they want to. So, for the rest of you who don't want to see a preteen boy play doctor on a nude child, please skip this movie.
