All hatted up for high tea

Sporting their millinery finest at the Arrowtown Autumn Festival’s Super Seniors High Tea at the Athenaeum Hall yesterday are (from left) Janette Gellatly, of Invercargill, Angela Gibbs, of Edendale, and Christine Brown, of Invercargill.

The sold-out event included entertainment from the New Zealand Youth Choir, the Buckingham Belles and young members of the Queenstown Highland Dance Club.

Other autumn festival action yesterday included judging of the highly-competitive harvest chutney competition and, for the first time, a pumpkin competition. The winner of the former was Caroline Hughes’ Reggie’s spicy apricot chutney, while Jo Boyd, of Arrowtown, won the prize for the heaviest pumpkin — hers weighed in at a whopping 29.35kg.

Last night, Buckingham Green was packed for a sold-out outdoor screening of Toy Story, complete with a popcorn truck on site and, simultaneously, the annual Bayleys Arrowtown Art Exhibition was officially opened at the Lakes District Museum.

Arrowtown will be bursting at the seams today, during the annual market day and street parade, which begins at 2pm.
