Not exactly what I was expecting in a story! I did find it quite entertaining. Awesome cast. My favorite performance was Viggo Mortesen’s. Who would have ever imagined a movie in which Viggo Mortesen performance is more over the top than Christopher Walken. Go figure!... Check it out!
Even though there’s way better mid 90’s offerings out there, I can’t help but feel like The Prophecy is a perfect example of mid 90’s dimension films standard issue that would barely be in theaters and always end up on cable at 2am when I was refilling my parents vodka bottles of with water or doing whippits instead of sleeping for school. The Prophecy features ok (if a little bland) direction and a heavy handed allegory/metaphor filled fantasy horror story that sounds a bit run of the mill at this point, but this movies secret weapon is its cast, obviously Walken shines but the ensemble is the glue that holds the shaky moments of this thing together.

How in the hell did Vinegar Syndrome trick me into watching this damn movie again? Essentialy The Prophecy at its core is nothing more than an elaborate big budget sov but with better production values and location access. Notice I didn't say talent. Nor vision. Not that it's lacking either insomuch as that it's just ever oh so farcical. Amanda Plummer upstaging Christopher Walken? The whole religious spectacle. A war in heaven, God's away on holiday, the soul of a sociopath and a deal with the Devil. An unreliable narrator listlessly espousing the duality of man. Apathy and boredom. Apathy pays the bills. Apathy opens the door. And boredom pulls the trigger. Apathy and boredom. The true duality. Only gods…

a creepy, wild and bat-shit catholic horror movie that takes itself a bit too seriously in long stretches but is saved by it's fair share of goofy moments and scenery-chewing acting. christopher walken as the archangel gabriel is the main reason to watch this, he's absolutely going off on all cylinders, definitely up there in his top "wacky walken" performances. you also get a drop dead sexy viggo mortensen playing lucifer, always a win-win. if you're a fan of End Of Days, then this is right up your alley.

This is not the kind of horror film you come to for the scares. On the contrary.. you come here for Christopher Walken and to have one hell of a good time!

One of these days I'm gonna write a comprehensive critical essay on Not-Fun, a quality I've found in even the most promising genre entertainments, like a tumor it tends to start small but it can also metastasize throughout the entire structure, draining it of any excitement or pleasure it may have had. This is a great example of Not-Fun whenever Christopher Walken isn't hamming it up, it could have been a great Biblecore thriller with angels and demons battling over a soul-Macguffin trapped in a little girl's body but instead it is that but without the great part. No one knows what Not-Fun looks or sounds like and it can't be isolated from the entities it attaches itself to, but its effects are unmistakable as well as fatal. If you've ever been watching a movie and asked yourself "why aren't I enjoying this?," you've felt it for yourself.
Walken crashes this movie like a bat unfurling into a vampire. Nearly as dangerous as his Kings of New York character and nearly as charismatic as his Max Shreck in Batman Returns. Menace. Spit in your eye. Tongue lashing isn’t blunt enough. Tongue whupping. The kind of maniac who leaves the handles of a grocery store basket in the middle so you can’t stack another on top of it. The kind of sociopath who scratches a library dvd so no else can watch it. Someone who would knock on your door without calling first. Just nasty, nasty hostility. And then at 1:14:00 Viggo Mortensen finally appears on screen as Satan and the Erlenmeyer flask boils over and everyone’s hands are…
Directed by the guy who wrote The Highlander film? You really don’t say. Viggo Mortensen should’ve had a much bigger role. Never explained why the angels were on Earth, saying it’s because of the war is stupid, because it’s just one jealous angel that is angry for not being loved enough.

This movie makes more sense when you realize it was written and directed by the guy who wrote Highlander—just a bunch of all-powerful beings stuck on Earth raging this age-old war against one another.
It's a silly Catholic-horror-fantasy with some decent performances floating around between Elias Koteas, Virginia Madsen, a whacky-yet-creepy Christopher Walken, and a totally rad Viggo playing the wound-licking, heart-chomping Lucifer.
I'm not sure how the Catholicism is supposed to jive with the vague Native American beliefs and rituals shown at the end—that appear to be cribbed straight from Poltergeist II btw.
Points for Banya as the goofy coroner and Eric Stoltz as Simon, the kissiest of all the kissy angels.
Also, so that Colonel was supposed to literally be the most evil soul on the planet? And he lived in Arizona, you say?
