Thor: The Dark World actor Christopher Eccelston will return to the MCU if he's going to work with the Thor: Ragnarok team. The actor played Malekith, the primary antagonist to the second Thor standalone from 2013. And if he's going to be asked about the experience, he didn't have the funnest of time on set while making the Alan Taylor flick. However, he's willing to step back into the shoes of the villain if he'll be in the hands of director Taika Waititi and the crew behind the 2017 threequel.

Prior to the release of Ragnarok, the Thor sub-franchise wasn't as revered as the other solo trilogies in the MCU. But that all changed when Waititi stepped into the picture and made the conscious effort of revamping the Chris Hemsworth-led series. The gloomy and dark aesthetic was replaced by bright, psychedelic visuals reminiscent of Jack Kirby's comic book panels. In conjunction to that, the movie's overall tone was upbeat and light - a total 180-degree from its predecessors. The trilogy single-handedly revitalized its titular character, and helped catapult him to the popularity he now enjoys. Considering all this, it's understandable that if given the chance, Eccleston will be game to reprise Malekith with the Ragnarok creative team.

During his appearance at New York Comic-Con (via RadioTimes), Eccleston recalled his time working on The Dark World, and he mostly echoed his comments about that experience he made back in 2017, particularly how he "was in make-up for six, seven hours every day" which apparently Marvel Studios didn't inform him about beforehand. He also criticized the "lack of humour in the film," which is not an unusual comment about the over-the-top serious Thor 2. “I understand that some people love that particular film, and some of you actually like Malekith the naughty elf, so that’s only my experience within it. But I know that people love the film and I accept that and I’m careful about it. I’m so diplomatic these days,” he added. Despite all this, Eccleston said that “if it was the guy[s] who wrote the third" that will handle his potential return to the MCU, he'll gladly do it.

Considering the circumstances, there are no clear paths for Malekith to return to the MCU that will guarantee him working with Waititi at this point, but that doesn't mean that fans won't see him pop out in any projects in the pipeline. The fact that they found a way to bring back Natalie Portman's Jane Foster and Kat Dennings' Darcy Lewis via Thor: Love and Thunder and WandaVision respectively is an indication that the company is willing to look into some of their forgotten characters and bring them back into universe.

One would be hard pressed to find those who genuinely like Thor: The Dark World in its entirety. It's messy and boring compared to other MCU installments. But if Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston were given the chance to make up for it via Thor: Ragnaraok, Eccleston arguably should also have the same opportunity. While the verdict on Portman and Dennings' return is still to be determined, at least they have another go at their respective characters. Perhaps Marvel Studios can find a way to make Eccleston's condition a reality now that they know he's willing to do it.
