The inspiring, instructive, and ultimately triumphant memoir of a man who used hard work and a Master Plan to turn a life sentence into a second chance.

Growing up in a tough Washington, D.C., neighborhood, Chris Wilson was so afraid for his life he wouldn't leave the house without a gun. One night, defending himself, he killed a man. At eighteen, he was sentenced to life in prison with no hope of parole.

But what should have been the end of his story became the beginning. Deciding to make something of his life, Chris embarked on a journey of self-improvement--reading, working out, learning languages, even starting a business. He wrote his Master Plan: a list of all he expected to accomplish or acquire. He worked his plan every day for years, and in his mid-thirties he did the impossible: he convinced a judge to reduce his sentence and became a free man. Today Chris is a successful social entrepreneur who employs returning citizens; a mentor; and a public speaker. He is the embodiment of second chances, and this is his unforgettable story.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for The Master Plan

“Inspiring without being preachy, Wilson’s manifesto will greatly appeal to today’s youth.”—
Publishers Weekly

“Uplifting...Wilson candidly shares the eye-opening details of his time in prison with a prose style that moves with directness and refreshingly unfettered honesty...A smoothly written memoir steeped in positive reinforcement and hope for the future.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Truly inspiring...Wilson engagingly tells his riveting story while also exposing corrupt justice practices...Highly recommended [for] anyone who loves an uplifting life story.”—Booklist

“Wilson’s voice comes through loud and clear in this memoir that should have wide appeal.”--Library Journal

"The Master Plan is less of a roadmap and more of a philosophy that we should all take to heart: we are all better than our worst decision, our sense of justice should honor the redemptive possibilities inherent in every person, and our destinies are truly intertwined.”—Wes Moore, author of The Other Wes Moore

“An incredibly moving book that will change the way you look at the criminal justice system.”—Senator Bernie Sanders

“This is a brave book, full of thought-provoking insight on criminal justice, the modern prison system, and the possibility of redemption. And yet what sticks with me most is the beautiful, heartbreaking mother-son relationship....Thank you, Chris Wilson, for taking us into the cave, so that we can better understand the light.”—Beth Macy, bestselling author of
Dopesick and Factory Man

“I’ve admired Chris Wilson’s work with the underprivileged and returning citizens for the last three years, but as this book proves, you don’t really know a man until you understand his struggle. Do not miss this story of redemption, empowerment and giving back. It can change your life.”—Van Jones, TV show host and author of Beyond the Messy Truth

“A brutally confessional indictment of mass incarceration in America.”—Taylor Branch, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Parting the Waters

The Master Plan adds a personal narrative to Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow, making it equally important. Chris Wilson is our generation’s go-to voice on mass incarnation and redemption. Not only does he brilliantly articulate his struggle, he offers a clear path to what needs to be done if we truly want reform. The difference between Wilson and other scholars is that he doesn’t only talk about the ills of the system––he’s survived that system and changed his life, and now spends his time helping other people do the same. This book will change the world.”—D Watkins, bestselling author of The Beast Side and The Cook Up

“A bright light in a moment of moral darkness. Chris Wilson’s story is both a triumph and a call to arms on behalf of the incarcerated.”—Nathalie Molina Niño, CEO of BRAVA Investments and author of Leapfrog

Wow! What a remarkable man! Chris Wilson talks the talk and walks the walk. I read this book in four days, and my 15-year-old son read it in two days. (I took his phone. This was a requirement to get the phone back.😉) He never complained though.Just when I thought that Michelle Obama wrote the best Memoir of the 21st Century, here comes Chris Wilson with a close second. Two antithetical stories with an awe-inspiring parallel message of hard work, dedication, discipline, and perseverance.Chris Wilson grew up surrounded by poverty, gangs, police brutality, and witnessing his mother being domestically abused. As a young teenager, he became a product of his environment on the mean streets of D.C.. He was ultimately charged as an adult as a teenager, and sentenced to life in Prison at ”Patuxent” Penitentiary. This is where his growth would begin. We often hear the saying ”whatever you choose to do in life, be the best that you can be.” Well, Chris Wilson took that message to heart and became the best prisoner that anyone could ever be. In prison, he managed to let go of the anger, took responsibility for his actions, didn't make excuses, found a mentor, created a master plan, and stuck to it. He educated himself, learned several languages, and inspired other fellow inmates to follow in his footsteps. After his release, he stuck to his masterplan and put his money where his mouth is by returning to the community that he helped to decimate. He started businesses, created jobs, continued his education and is continuously giving back to his community. This man is doing so much until I can't keep up. Is the penal system broken? Absolutely. However, this man keeps going. At one point, I just wanted to reach inside the book, give him a hug and say, ” that's enough my brother, you’ve done more than enough.” But I doubt very seriously if he’d quit.Michelle Obama and Chris Wilson are my new heroes. They both make me want to be smarter, and they make me go out into the community and do more.Thank you, Mr. Wilson, for this inspirational piece. Now I have to ask the readers, ”what’s you masterplan? What’s your End game?

Speaks volumes about how prison systems everywhere have become a revolving door as inmates keep returning time and time again! Rather than just arresting someone and throwing them in a cell where they can learn how to be a better criminal. Why not while incarcerated give them the opportunity to learn and receive their GED and learn a skill they can carry with them when they get released to make better choices for themselves. If you put them in a box for 6 to 18 months then throw them back out on the street you can't expect someone to do anything different. But you teach them so they can take care of themselves then things might be different! I think the prison system is afraid to train inmates because then they might get out, get a job and not come back to jail. Then the prison system would be out of a job.
This book explains this so well, even though it does get a little political but it is only briefly and then it gets back to the real reason for the book. Which is to help someone learn a skill and they will be able to make better choices when they are out on the street!

Wilson's well-written story shows the circumstances that led to his being in prison and the way great determination and skill, but also luck led to his being liberated. The implication is that many others are just as worthy of another chance but never get it.

My favourite book of the year so far. So so good. A boy with so much love and promise despite his surroundings, caught in a trap that couldn't be escaped from. The power of focus and commitment and courage and vulnerability and honesty. Chris does an amazing job of getting the tone just right. This will interrupt any previous assumptions you may have made, it will educate you in the hearts of others, it will inspire you to play a bigger game, and make a difference. I just loved this book. It will be the reason many new conversations start, and so I want as many people to read it as possible. It's a big book, but a very inhalable 2 sitting read. Carve the time out and grab your tissues this weekend.
