Kristin Schell is the founder of The Turquoise Table, a movement of ordinary people who want to create community right in their own front yards. Ten years ago, she and her family moved to a new home in Austin, Texas.
One day, Kristin tried to connect with her new neighbors by hosting a party. She bought a few picnic tables but the delivery driver set one table down in her front yard by mistake. “After the party, I painted the table turquoise—my favorite color—and put it in the front yard, just a few feet from the sidewalk,” she says.
That turquoise table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks. “We got intentional about where we spent our time,” Kristin says. “We became ‘front yard people’.”
Neighbors began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat. Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea. Then neighbors asked Kristin if their family could put a picnic table in their front yard too. A movement was born. “It was a simple way to slow down and connect with others,” she says. The turquoise table was inviting and had a shared feel.
People often hesitate to invite others into their homes. They think their house is too messy, it’s not big enough or they don’t have enough time. “Our perfectionism can cause us to miss out on the joy of connecting with others,” Kristin says. Her picnic table takes away the excuses—and the pressure.
She likes how it makes her take a small step toward relieving loneliness and building relationships in her community. “People’s greatest need is to know that they are loved and that they belong,” she says.
A decade after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Tables exist in all 50 states and in 13 countries around the world. Not all of them are actually turquoise. “No matter what color it is, it’s a friendship table,” Kristin says.
24. Why did Kristin Schell start the movement
A. To host more parties in her front yard.
B. To communicate with people in the neighborhood.
C. To amuse her friends and neighbors.
D. To create harmonious communities worldwide.
25. Which of the following words best describe Kristin Schell according to the text
A. Creative and sociable. B. Friendly and humorous.
C. Generous and ambitious. D. Cautious and responsible.
26. What can be inferred from the text
A. People don’t like others to step into their houses.
B. The campaign has a big impact at home and abroad.
C. Kristin Schell bought the turquoise table to host a party.
D. People feel unwilling to join in the front yard chat at first.
27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Love Your Neighbors B. An Amazing Woman
C. Happy Front Yard Time D. Tables Where All Are Welcome

Research into whether the human voice helps plants isn’t decisive. Even so, there are convincing reasons that chatting with your houseplants is good for them—and you.
In a 2022 survey by , 50 percent of the 1250 respondents reported talking to their plants. When asked why, 65 percent said they believe it helps them grow. There search, however, isn’t definitive about this point. While studies have found that vibrations (震动)caused by sound do affect plants, the jury is still out on whether the human voice offers any specific benefit.
For many plant owners, though, the science is beside the point. Marquis Matson, co-founder of the blog the Indoor Nursery, says she talks to her plants every day because “it feels nice and I think plants get a sense of community from my talking to them and that keeps them going”. On the plant side, a study in a 2003 issue of the journal Ultrasonics investigated the effects of the classical music and the sounds of birds, insects and water on the growth of Chinese cabbage and cucumber. Both forms of sound exposure increased the vegetables’ growth. In a 2015 study, researchers exposed marigold (金盏花)and chickpea(鹰嘴豆)plants to light Indian music as well as to traffic noise. They found that both types of plants grew and developed better after being exposed to the music for four hours per day, but not to the traffic sounds. “Plants absolutely respond to vibrations in their environment—which can cause plants to grow differently and become more resistant to falling over,” says Heidi Appel, leader of the study. She points out, “While sound absolutely matters to plants, we don’t know if talking to them makes them grow differently.”
Despite being short of studies about the benefits of talking to your plants, there is at least one theoretical bonus, “If we identify with a living organism that we’re taking care of, we’re going to take better care of it and help them thrive,” Appel says.
28. What do the underlined words “the jury is still out” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. The jury is playing outside. B. The jury has decided.
C. There is uncertainty. D. People have different ideas.
29. What do Marquis Matson’s words suggest
A. Vibrations caused by sound affect plants.
B. Chatting with the plants benefits both sides.
C. Scientific research in this area makes no sense.
D. A sense of community is a must for plants’ growth.
30. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3
A. Traffic sounds probably have a negative influence on plant growth.
B. Talking to plants can make them more sensitive to the environment.
C. Plants do not fall over because of the vibrations in their environment.
D. Classical music is good for plant growth as sounds of nature do.
31. What is Appel’s attitude towards talking to plants
A. Approving. B. Neutral.
C. Unfavorable D. Unclear.

Artificial intelligence (AI)models have long surpassed(超过)just creating text responses and images. Now, with only one sentence, OpenAI’s latest text-to-video model, Sora, can turn your words into video with good visual quality while faithfully following your content instructions.
Sora is said to perform better than many other existing models with similar functions. The Al model can create video at suitable aspect ratios(屏幕高宽比)for different devices, such as both widescreen videos and vertical videos that we usually see on social media. It also lets users quickly test out content in lower quality before making the high-quality version, which helps speed up output.
Aside from this, its ability to present videos in a realistic and smooth manner is amazing. Sora can create detailed scenes with several characters, scientific types of motion, and accurate subject and background details while generating multiple shots with a single video. Beyond the user’s requests, it also understands how these elements exist in the real world. For example, reflections in the water changes as a woman walks by.
Sora’s performance wouldn’t be possible without its helpful assistant, ChatGPT, which transforms simple sentences into detailed descriptions. improving the accuracy of output according to the user’s prompts(提示语).
However, the current model isn’t perfect. It may have trouble accurately showing how things move in a complicated scene and might not get how one action leads to another. For example, if someone eats part of a cookie in a Sora-made video, the cookie might not look like it’s been bitten into. The model might mix up directions like left and right, and find it hard to describe events in the right order.
As of February, Sora is still in the testing stage of development. OpenAI is now inviting cybersecurity professionals to make random attacks on Sora’s system, aiming to test the model’s possible weaknesses and risks. Sora has also been open to some visual artists, designers and filmmakers. Their feedback(反馈)will assist OpenAI in enhancing the model to better serve creative professionals.
32. What is the main focus of paragraphs 2-3
A. Sora’s strengths B. Sora’s variety
C. Sora’s development D. Sora’s techniques
33. How does ChatGPT contributes to Sora’s capabilities
A. By specifying user input B. By providing verbal feedback
C. By examining sample videos D. By improving video quality
34. Why does the author provide the example in paragraph 5
A. To stress Sora’s potential safety risks
B. To illustrate Sora’s existing limitations.
C. To show Sora’s perfect performance.
D. To explain the concept of a space time patch.
35. What can we know about Sora up to now
A. It has been made available to various industries.
B. Its commercial release has been called off.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
With everything going on in the world, it’s no wonder so many of us are struggling to sleep. 36 And it’s hard to fall back asleep again. However, simple steps before bed can help.
Test your pillow. If you bought your pillow in 2022, it’s already old. The National Sleep Foundation suggests replacing your pillow every one to two years. 37 “When your brain is sending pain signals, it can’t send sleep signals,” says Dr Michael JBreus, a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist.
Get an hour of sunlight each day. Morning sunlight is important for good sleep. “It stops producing melatonin in your brain, which helps relieve the sleepy morning feeling,” Breus says. It also sets a mental timer to produce melatonin, the so-called sleep hormone, that evening. Aim for 15 to 30 minutes of direct light first and two 15-minute outdoor breaks during the day. 38
No salty snacks before bed. In a Japanese study, researchers followed 321 patients with high-salt diets and sleep issues for 12 weeks. 39 And those who ate more salt woke up more often to go to the bathroom.
40 If you need to express complaints to your family, don’t wait until night. Tough discussions are less likely to disturb your sound sleep if you start them earlier. Arguments can activate your sympathetic nervous system, which disturbs sleep. Some research even suggests that going to bed angry may make you bad-tempered the next morning.
A. Avoid arguments with your family.
B. Manage your troubles before dinner.
C. It signals your brain that it is time to be awake.
D. It contributes to good health when exposed to light.
E. It’s normal to wake up at night, especially as you age.
F. A used one in the past can cause neck pain and restless sleep.
G. When people cut them down, their average toilet trips decreased.
