For reasons we all know, Wikipedia has been fully or partially blocked in China in the past few years. It has been popularly known as 'The Great Firewall of China' Here is how you can connect to it.

  1. 1
Try the link directly: Wikipedia sites of a particular language may be unblocked sometimes. For example, in April 2008, people in China can access (English Version), while was blocked.
  2. 2
Try mirror site: Mirror sites, mostly contributed by Wiki enthusiasts and volunteers, has became the most common way to connect to Wikipedia in China, because no setup is required for end-users. For the time being, is still accessible.
    • Open proxies such as Tor are automatically blocked because open proxies have caused lots of disruption to Wikimedia projects. Consider requesting an account being created for you with IP block exemption. When editing through Tor or another open proxy, autoconfirmed status is given to accounts at least two weeks old and have made one hundred edits.[1] [2]
  3. 3
Connection Tool: A software program named "Wu jie", funded by a banned religion group, can help users connect to any banned websites. If you need to use it, download the software before you come to China.
  4. 4
If these all fail, you can ask an overseas friend using Messenger to copy and email articles to you, or to save the Wikipedia article as a web page on their computer and let you download it via Messenger.

  • Question
I am a Chinese student. Why can't we use some websites such as YouTube, and some take a lot of time to open?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
YouTube and the entire Google network (except for and are blocked due to Google not complying to take down results considered inappropriate by the Chinese government. The sites that take a long time are because the servers are overseas. Baidu and Chinese Bing are fast because they have servers in China. You can try to get around restrictions by using a VPN and connecting to a US server, but it will be slow.

      • Once connected to Wikipedia via a proxy, if the content contains any sensitive keywords, the page will show "The connection was reset" and disconnect you from the site automatically, thanks to the powerful internet censorship infrastructure in China.
      • If you need to download any tools for withstanding the "censorship" in China, do it at your home country because these softwares may be blocked from downloading in China.
      • The mobile version of Wikipedia is becoming more popular as GPRS become less costly. So far the only site that can support both double-byte characters, like Chinese and Japanese is Wikipedia.
