SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CHIKUNGUNYA

  • Symptoms usually appear within a week of infection.
  • Fever
  • Anorexia
  • Joint pain and joint stiffness
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Cutaneous eruptions
  • Skin rash

CAUSES OF CHIKUNGUNYA

Chikungunya caused by the bite of Aedes mosquito infected with chikungunya virus.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF CHIKUNGUNYA

The incubation period of chikungunya fever is 4-7 days, following which the disease has a sudden onset with fever, chills, cephalalgia, anorexia, etc. The cutaneous eruptions may recur every 3 to 7 days.

DIAGNOSIS OF CHIKUNGUNYA

  • The virus can be isolated from the blood of febrile patients.
  • Serological diagnosis
  • Serum neutralization test
  • Haemagglutination inhibition
  • ELISA
  • PCR

TREATMENTS OF CHIKUNGUNYA

  • There is no specific treatment for chikungunya infection and it is usually self-limiting.
  • Analgesics
  • Antipyretic drugs like paracetamol
  • Fluid supplementation

PROGNOSIS OF CHIKUNGUNYA

It is curable and the symptoms are manageable.

COMPLICATIONS OF CHIKUNGUNYA

  • Arthropathy – it appears between 3rd and 5th day after the onset of clinical symptoms, and it can persist for many months and even years.

CHIKUNGUNYA AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda,Chikungunya management is based on the symptoms.
  • In Ayurveda Chikungunya is known as Sandhijwara which means “fever of the joints”. The symptoms of Sandhijvara and Chikungunya are very similar and hence Ayurveda treatment provides relief for the disease.

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
