CHICAGO — Two of the youngest victims of the mass shooting near 52nd and Damen are still recovering at Comer Children’s Hospital.

Their parents say the one and seven-year-old boys are doing a little better and remain in the ICU.

The family says they were about the cut the cake at that party in Back of the Yards Saturday, celebrating a loved one’s confirmation, when they heard what sounded like fireworks.

After that everyone started running and when they got inside the house with their kids, they saw 1-year-old Aaron was shot in the abdomen and 7-year-old Isaiah was bleeding from the back.

“This is the worst nightmare,” Monica Mendez, their mom, said. “I wish somebody could wake me up from it, to see both my kids shot that day. I just thought I was going to lose both of them at the same time.”

The parents say baby Aaron may lose his kidney because of the damage.

These kids – two of 11 people shot. 9-year-old Ariana Molina was killed that night.

Aaron and Isaiah have been through surgeries and will have more.

Their parents credit the paramedics who responded and the doctors and nurses here at Comer for saving their sons’ lives.

“That feeling of thinking you’re going to lose both of your kids, after something that nobody deserve, it’s just really scary, really horrific,” Pablo Vijil, the boys’ father, said.

This family is asking anyone with information to come forward, saying this crime cannot go unsolved. Police say the shooters are believed to have a gang affiliation but the family they targeted does not.
