I have travelled around Eire many times since the 1990's and Dublin - as a capital city always seemed vibrant, busy and full of atmosphere. I accept that places change over the years, but I could not comprehend just how awful this part of the city has become. I visited for a long weekend to look up a few 'old haunts' and was, by and large, very disappointed. O'Connell street was full of people crashing into you as you walked by, looking at their mobiles like zombies, shouting and looking at themselves to see if their sports ware clothing was still 'on trend!'. I don't think that I have ever been to such a scruffy, down at heel major area of a large city with such rude (and mostly non Irish) people, The place has lost its soul and is no longer what it used to be. Maybe due to the EU freedom of movement policies (?). The few pockets of old Dublin that still exist remain pleasant (The Celt pub for example), but this is all surrounded by cheap shops and international food take away venues and filthy streets. Dublin you have sold your sold. How sad.

My hotel was here, in the hub, north of the river-upper O’connell. Very busy and lots of smokers-ugh! The shops were all the same touristy shops, nothing unique or interesting. Food options were good, but had to search for anything highly rated. The part that really turned me off was the trash, dirty and rundown appearance. While walking, I would also get random whiffs of urine. I got up early to meet a tour one day & was walking down O’connell to meet it & smelled (and saw) human feces the entire way! There were a bunch of street sweepers out & they were probably brushing it into their equipment & flying it around. So nasty! The monuments were littered with trash, but workers were out there cleaning it. Throughout the day there was always trash collectors out & city maintenance trying to keep up, but unfortunately have a real problem there. Saw homeless, but being from bay area in San Francisco, Dublin didn’t compare in that aspect, but they did w/the smells. Found out later, south of the river is better.

The worst part of Dublin. My advice to anyone visiting Dublin is to stay south of the river Liffey. O'Connell Street is very run down and full of beggars, drunks, druggies and homeless. It's a shame they rebuilt it after Easter weekend 1916 as it was no doubt nicer after the rebellion!!!
It's the only place in Dublin that I felt unsafe and wouldn't allow my teenage girls to visit on their own either at night or during the day.
There is also a large number of Romany immigrants on this Street. Watch your pockets and bags people.

The street has been destroyed over the last ten years or so. Not safe for anyone to walk down, it is teeming with goofing junkies and aggressive groups of non nationals. Keep your wife and daughter away from this dump. Stay south side.

O'Connell Street is a hive of activity and impossible to ignore if you're visiting Dublin. The historic Post Office sits proudly on the street waiting for your visit and gratuitous photo opportunity.
Wander up the street s and enjoy the shopping and copious hospitality available in any of the pubs and cafes therein. Transport links are abundant in the aera and you can get to wherever you want to be from very close by.
In short, O'Connell Street is where you need to be.

Trams and buses run along the street. We bought our Leap Card from the TFI office here. Other notable features include the historic GPO museum and futuristic Spire monument.

Walked up and down this broad thoroughfare a number of times during our visit to Dublin. Many stores, shops, food along the way. Central to all the main attractions in Dublin. Good for people watching, including the fairly abundant transient community. Never felt unsafe though.

Once more Barcelona has La Rambla, Berlin has Unter der Linden ... Dublin has O'Connell street ... the iconic street of Dublin.
Stating at O'Connell bridge and the Daniel O'Connell monument at the the beginning of the street, a gathering point for people and popular meeting place.
Also on the O'Connell street you shall find "the Spire" - a piece of art ? whatever... it is a 38 meter tall stainless steel column. (until the 1966 there stood the Nelson column that was blown up by republicans).
Shops, restaurants , historical buildings ... you shall find those on O'Connell street.
At the other end of the street you shall find the Parnell monument .... at the point where the trams turn.
Overall it is the street to walk in Dublin when you feel like...

The street is full of drug addicts and drunks. If you are a tourist do not go here at night or after dark. Do not walk around by yourself.

We have booked to stay in a hotel on o'connell street tomorrow night. The hotel has parking. Can we still drive in this area if it's a construction sight?

We didn't drive in the city. Very walkable near the river. We used the Hop On & Off bus to get to further destinations. Also a good initial overview of the city so you know where you want to get back to. Being American we wouldn't attempt to drive on the other side.
Hi, what places are expensive to eat out and what places are more reasonable price to have a breakfast and evening meal ?,as will be visiting Dublin at the end of May 2017.

Hace tiempo que están trabajando en las calles del centro de Dublin (zona del Trinity College y el O'Connell Bridge) para mejorar el transporte del tranvÃa. A pesar de ello, se puede circular perfectamente a pie y en transporte público.

How far is the walk from O'Connell bridge to Parnell Square? We are going to Dublin in July and are trying to maximize our time.

Yes 10-15 mins and it's an easy walk as Dublin quite compact. There are road works all over this area as a tram system being developed but it did not spoil our enjoyment at all.
