Charlie Mullan was charming, funny, generous, and seemed larger than life. His laugh was infectious. I will remember the fun I had in Baltimore with the Mullan family.

This is the photo of Mr. Mullan that we display in our home with our other parents. When this photo was taken, Mr. Mullan was at the height of his career in the building industry and ABC was a becoming the major trade association that it is today. Mr. Mullan's daughter, Marylou, deeply appreciates the thoughts of all those who have been kind enough to recall their memories of her father. By the way, he was a wonderful father-in-law as well.

Our nations free enterprise system and merit shop philosophy has lost an individual whose devotion to those beliefs and whose committment to the construction industry will be recognized forever. His courage, against tremendous odds, was the cornerstone that built the merit shop industry and ABC to the most respected association in the construction industry. I too, had the honor of meeting Mr. Mullan at the 2000 Baltimore convention and will cherish that memory of visiting with the founder of our great association. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Mullans family upon the loss of a truly courageous individual.

Serving as National Chairman in 2002, I often reflected on the day when I was standing on stage with Charlie during his memorable opening of the 50th ABC Convention in Baltimore. To this day I think of that moment and how proud I was to share the stage and the memories of Charlie's contributions to our construction industry. He will be missed in our hearts, but not for his bold leadership.

Our ABC chapter in Hawaii has a big silver bowl on a pedastal that is named after Charlie. It is by far our most prized award. This bowl took on new meeaning in June 2000 when Charlie brought down the gavel for the 50th convention. I wish I could have known him personally.

The year that our Western Washington Chapter of ABC won the prestigious Mullan award for membership growth -- and Charlie was on hand to hand us the trophy, I was really excited. He has meant a lot to ABC members and staff over the years, and his passing won't change that. His legacy of freedom and opportunity will go on.
