The Blue Book of Iowa Women 149MRS. CHARLES W. MULLAN

Prominent among the women of Waterloo and one whose history has been closely allied with the city and whose father-in-law surveyed, platted and named that city, is Mrs. Charles W. Mullan. Emma Lucy Hammond Mullan was born Dec. 15, 1851, in Paris, Oneida County, N. Y. She is the daughter of William Hammond, who came to Waterloo in 1855, and established the first bank and real estate office in that city, and the second bank of the state. Her mother was Frances Chesebro Babcock, a woman of rare beauty and grace of character. She was a gentle woman of the old type, who painted in water colors, did exquisite needle work and read carefully selected literature. She was descended from the historic Perry family. Matthew Calbraith Perry, the American naval officer, who opened commerce with Japan, was her grandfather's brother, as was also Commodore Oliver H. Perry, who defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie. The late Rev. Maltby Babcock, who was pastor of the Brick Presbyterian church of New York, and Edward Noyes Westcott, author of David Harum, were cousins. Kendric C. Babcock, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences of the University of Illinois, is a cousin. Mrs. Mullen was educated in a seminary conducted by Miss Anna B^ield, of Mt. Holyoke, and a pupil of Mary Lyon. She was married Nov. 6, 1882, to Charles W. Mullen and has four children. Chas. W. Mullen was born Dec. 31, 1845, son of Charles Mullen, one of the first settlers of Black Hawk county, going there in 1846. He surveyed, platted and named the city of Waterloo. He and his wife, a woman of great strength of character, endured many hardships of pioneer life. Their son was educated in the Upper Iowa University, read law with a private tutor and was admitted to the bar in 1870. He served as city solicitor, as county attorney and in 1897 was elected state senator, serving in the 27th and 28th general assemblies. He resigned in 1900 to accept the office of Attorney General, which office he held until 1913, when he was appointed Judge of the Tenth Judicial District, the position he now holds.

Mrs. Mullen is a member of the Congregational church, in which she has been an active member since she was thirteen years of age. She is a member of the Waterloo Woman's Club, the second oldest woman's club in Iowa. She is a charter member of the Fort-nightly Club, a member of the P. E. 0. sisterhood and of the Ladies of the G. A. R. Her life work has been to rear her family, and right well has she accomplished that task. Her oldest son, Charles Hammond, is a graduate of Iowa College, and resides in St. Paul, being department manager of the Minneapolis Dry Goods Co. Her daughter, Frances Gertrude Blair, is a graduate of Iowa College and resides in Des Moines, the wife of Mr. John Blair, First Vice President of the Des Moines National Bank. The third child, Alice May Walker, was also a student at Iowa College, is the wife of Carl R. Walker of St. Cair, Mich., manager of the Diamond Chrystal Salt Co, The younger son, Alfred William, is a graduate of Iowa College and of the law department of the State University of Iowa. He very successfully practiced his profession in Waterloo for several years when because of ill health he temporarily gave up the law and is now in the U. S. Forestry service in New Mexico.

Rev. Fred P. Fisher married Laura Edith Virdin Mullan, widow of William Harrison Mullan in 1932. Laura Virden Mullan returned to Waterloo, married the Rev. Fisher, and in 1943, after an illness, returned to Aberdeen, S.D. to live with her son, Henry Cecil Mullan, whom she always called "Cecil." Rev. Fisher went with her.

A two-story brick residence at 516 West First Street, Waterloo landmark for the past 60 years, and former home of the late Judge Charles W. Mullan, has been sold for $6,500by its present owner, Rev. Fred P. Fisher, Walnut Court apartments, to Bruce Dean, 1920 West Seventh street, it was revealed here Wednesday. Rev. Mr. Fisher had purchased the home six years ago from A. W. Mullan, 2330 Grand boulevard, Cedar Heights, following the death of Mrs.C. W. Mullan, his mother. The home, however, has remained in the Mullan family until the present sale. Mrs. Fisher having been the widow of Will Mullan, a brother of Judge Mullan. Reverend Fisher has not resided in the family home since November, 1943, when Mrs. Fisher died.

Most of the antique furnishings of the home had previously been divided among the living members of the Mullan family, including a valuable library of limited edition books.

Judge Mullan was the son of Charles Mullan, early settler in Waterloo, who built the first FRAME house here at 166 Falls avenue, property now owned by R. M.Davison.

MRS. FRED FISHER DIES; DAUGHTER OF CITY FOUNDER

Former Laura Virden Mullan; Funeral Services Friday at Aberdeen, S.D.

Mrs. Fred P. Fisher, daughter of James Virden, one of the founders of Waterloo, died at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at the home of her son, Cecil Mullan, in Aberdeen, S.D.

She and her husband, Rev. Fred P. Fisher, retired Methodist minister, had been living here at 516 West First street. She had been ill for six months, and went with her husband to the son's home three weeks ago. She was 78 years old. Funeral and burial will be Friday afternoon in Aberdeen.

Born Here in 1865.

As Laura Virden, she was born in Waterloo April 17, 1865, to Mr. and Mrs. James Virden. Her father was one of the first few white settlers on the present site of Waterloo. A former resident of Kentucky and Illinois, he arrived here June 1 1846, after walking from Dubuque by way of Anamosa and Marion.

He pre-empted three pieces of government land, one of which today includes the greater portion of the Third ward of the city of Waterloo. The Virden home was on the creek named for him, near the present site of the Iowa Public Service Co., power house. Virden was one of the six men who filed the first plat of Waterloo.

Longtime Aberdeen Resident.

In 1892 Laura Virden was married to William H. Mullan, and they moved to Aberdeen, where she lived most of her life. Mr. Mullan died about 15 years ago. In 1934 she was married to Rev. Mr. Fisher, and since that time had lived here. The residence on West First street is the former home of the late Judge Charles Mullan, a brother of her first husband.

Surviving are the widower; two sons, Earl and Cecil Mullan, both of Aberdeen, and six grandchildren, all of Aberdeen.

Word of her death was received here by A. W. Mullan, 2330 Grand boulevard, Cedar Falls, a nephew of her first husband.

One of the daughters of Judge Charles H. Mullan, son of Charles and America, Frances Harriet Mullan, married John Halsey Blair in 1904 in Waterloo, IA. John Halsey Blair born in NJ. He was an attorney and banker in Iowa, later moving to Chicago, IL, where he was associated with the Bank of Chicago and with that position a deputy governor of the Federal Reserve, Chicago. I believe that he resigned in 1933 due to ill health and died in 1934 in Chicago, Cook County, IL. The Mullan/Blair family had two children, a son and a daughter.

Probate records:

Alfred William Mullan born 16 APR 1884 in Waterloo, Black Hawk County, IA, last child of Judge Charles W. Mullan and Emma Lucy Hammond [son of Charles and America Virden Mullan). Alfred married Helen Murphy on Wednesday, August 10, 1921, in Vinton, IA. Alfred W. followed his father's occupation, and was a lawyer, graduating from Iowa State University in 1908.

Alfred W. Mullan died January, 1969 (SSDI). Don't know the exact date, but prior to January 15, 1969. His wife Helen must have died prior to him.

They had two children. One daughter, Priscilla Mullan, born 14 MAY 1922 in Waterloo, Black Hawk County, IA. She died 06 SEP 2007 in Waterloo, Black Hawk County, IA. She did not live in Black Hawk County, IA all her life, but that is where she died.

I have calculated, from the date that Charles and America Virden Mullan first came to Black Hawk County, IA, which was June 21, 1846, to the death of Priscilla Mullan, how many years descendants of Charles and America Mullan have lived and died in Waterloo, Black Hawk County. It comes to 161 years+.

"MAN ADMITS STRIKING BLOW, TO STAND TRIAL

Kamloos, BC {AP}

W. J. Hess must stand trial for the fatal injury of Alva Mullan of Chehalis on November 21.

Hess admitted on the witness stand that he struck Mullan on the face four hours prior to his death from a brain hemorrage. He said, however, the blow was only with his open hand in a fit of anger. Mullan's skull was fractured on a fall to the sidewalk in front of the locker storage plant he managed. Hess formerly worked in the plant. Mrs. D. M. Thompson said she saw Hess strike the blow as Mullan and four friends were leaving the plant at midnight.

Hess is free on $7,500 bail. He was committed to stand trial at the next assizes."

[FYI: Chehalis is in Lewis County, Washington and that is where Alva and family were living. "Assizes" is criminal court.

"Killed in Altercation"

Alva worked for a company in Kamloops, Canada called J.R. Kirk. They would buy thousands of Christmas trees and put on boxcars and shipped to Los Angeles, California Christmas tree vendors and stores. They were cutting wild uncultured trees from a specific tract of 33,000 acres. Amy would join Alva to trips to Los Angeles for their delivery. One year they had 7 boxcars too many of trees and ended having to unload them and burn them.

Alva also built a large cold storage and meat processing plant. Back then no one had freezers to store their meats. These were like rental lockers.

While working there he lived in an apartment above the business and had some people over for a little celebration at work and an uninvited jealous man showed up. There was an altercation and Alva was hit over the head while his hands were in his pockets. The blow sent him backwards where he hit his head on the curb and then bled to death because he was a hemophiliac. Upon hearing of the injury Amy and son Richard immediately got in their car headed to Kamloops from Chehalis, Washington, USA. Unfortunately he died before they arrived. No one was charged in the death."

Alva Mullan died 21 NOV 1948 in Kamloops, B.C. Canada.

Alva married Amy ANDREWS, daughter of Baker ANDREWS and Nellie (____), about 1915. Amy was born in 1892 in WA. She died in 1961 in WA. She was buried in Claquato Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Chehalis, Lewis Co., WA.
