Bantam Chef not quite fast food (everything seems to be made to order, and from scratch) although you do order from the counter, nor is it quite casual dining (no staff service, and orders are presented in cardboard or Styrofoam containers). What Bantam Chef clearly...is, is the spot that the locals all eat at, at least as far as breakfast goes which is the meal we were there for, although they serve lunch and dinner as well. While standing in line I noticed that folks knew what they wanted, without looking at a menu, nor is their a menu board behind the counter. My fears were set aside though once we reached the register, as the cashier immediately knew we were not locals and handed us menus without any awkwardness, and did not push us to decide. Having ordered our meals we sat and waited to be called, during which time we noticed that everyone's order was being called by name, however our's was "order 12", as clearly everyone else was known to the staff by name. This is not a complaint mind you, simply trying to stress that this is as local a place as you will find. The food when it came was piping hot, fresh from the griddle and delicious too. The wife and daughter ordered chicken biscuits and pronounced them as good as any they've had anywhere, and I ordered a bacon and cheese omelet that I have to tell you was heavenly. The three eggs used to make this omelet were strained to their breaking point to contain the bacon component of the omelet, and as God is my witness, there had to be half a pound of bacon in that omelet. If one is going to call something a "Bacon Omelet" then Bacon should be at least given equal billing, and Bantam Chef delivers. Looking around I determined I was not lucky in my portion size, this was standard. And the icing on the cake, breakfast for 3 with 2 coffees and I'm out the door under $15. Unlooked for, but very pleasantly pleased with our visit to Bantam Chef. If the lunch and dinner items are as good as breakfast then it's the best value for your money anywhere in Burnsville.More
