Superb resort on paradise island with friendly staff and stunning sunsets
The Royal Sands resort at Koh Rong is the perfect destination if you are looking for for somewhere to seriously unwind. The star of the show is the beach, the sand is white and the water is a stunning azur. It’s by no means cheap, we could only really be here thanks for a very good special offer we had taken advantage of, but for your money you do get style and luxury. The whole resort is very thoughtfully put together, the rooms are spacious, (the beds are gigantic), air conditioned and have indoor and outdoor showers. There are two restaurants, one a little more upmarket (and pricier) and the other ‘the chill lounge’ is by the very good sized communal infinity pool. Both do very tasty food and offer both western and traditional Khmer cuisine. We found the chill lounge to have a bit more atmosphere, with its Balearic music and friendly staff. The sunsets here are unforgettable, the sun takes it time to set over the Gulf of Thailand and produces a stunning light and colour show on the sea. On the downside, it does feel as though you are a little hostage to the resort. Everything here is expensive. Maybe if you can afford to stay here it’s not a concern but I was started to feel a bit annoyed by the prices by the end of the week. I would welcome the resort and the other businesses that are along Sok San Beach taking some initiative and responsibility for clearing the beach of rubbish and plastic that washes up onto the shore.
Dear Bearstu74, You are very kind to dedicate some time to review your stay with us. We agree,The Royal Sands truly is the perfect place to unwind with a stunning beach. We will take a look at our prices and do adjustments were needed. Best wishes, Ivo Scheunemann Operations Manager

    Gorgeous!
Spent 2 nights on the island at this resort and my stay was fantastic! Started with a fast speed boat shuttle to the property, water and cold towels provided. Met on the dock by my lovely bungalow attendant, Lee. He was amazing, kept me informed of everything I needed to know, very promptly fixed a small issue with the door to my room, so very courteous and genuinely kind. Grounds are absolutely stunning, beach is the softest, finest, white powder I have ever stepped foot on. Pool is a delite. Restaurants produced amazing dishes and the breakfast buffet had many options, all delicious. The staff gets to know you so quickly and the level of service they provide is phenomenal. A definite highlight of my trip to Cambodia.
Dear Katie P, Thank you for your kind words and we truly enjoyed meeting you and welcoming you to the Royal Sands Koh Rong. We appreciate you enjoyed your stay with us. Especially the beach and our Restaurants. Also thank your for highlighting our team member Lee for his amazing job. We look forward to welcoming you back. Lovely resort BUT make sure you can afford it. !!!
Our room/ villa was 420 we did not have a pool but were 2nd line from the beach not certain if a villa with pool is actually worth it!. A very short walk to the sea. The room has everything you expect from a 5 star hotel, each room has a large decking area outside for you to enjoy. However we noted that some decks had sun loungers some didn’t. We didn’t. It would be good to have had a sun lounger. The resort was very quiet only about 20%occupancy. The beach and sea are fantastic. Yes there are sandflies but you need to cover up with DEET and you will be ok. It is true the food and drink is VERY expensive. Similar price to a London hotel. A small bottle of local beer $4 the cheapest wine $45. Average starter $16 and main $35. On previous reviews one reason for the high prices is that it covers” all service charge and tax “I would question this as each bill you sign for has the additional line of “ tip” to allow you to add additional service charge to the already added service charge.! Of course you do not have to add any additional service charge. The food is good. The chef is very keen to talk to guests and share his enthusiasm. There is no where else to walk to or dine at but no real need as everything is in the resort. We did the snorkel tour, the kayaking and I went fishing. ( bottom fishing for red snapper. v small ) the chef cooked them for us. The excursions are also not cheap. Kayaking in the mangroves $45 each. It appears very few guests do any of the activities. The staff are all very polite and try very hard to look after guests. They have a little more to learn about 5 star service but are eager to provide a high level of service. Can’t really fault the place apart from the cost! Don’t bother going if you are on a budget!
Dear brian081, Thank you very much for sharing your review and we are glad to learn that you enjoyed your villa and our food. We appreciate you sharing some points that we should improve in, which we will discuss with the team. We hope to welcome you back in the future. Best regards Ivo Scheunemann Operations Manager

One of the most enjoyable few days . The resort is a little out if the way , you take their boat( very nice ) from Sihanoukville to the island . But once you arrive your whisked off you feet and welcomed by smiling friendly faces . The GM , Livio , personally welcomes the guests . The facility is amazing , the rooms are beautiful in simplicity and well kept, with views like postcards . The beach is beyond amazing but i still cannot figure out the sand . Bleached white and squeaky clean . The water is perfect temperature and depth , but you better get generous with the sun block , you can easily forget how much time you’ve been in the Sun . Now the staff , will blow you away with their kindness and hospitality. Extremely courteous And very helpful . The will always be talking

We spent a family trip with our 2 kids and my parents for 2 nights in The royal sands Koh rong. We had a lovely stay in this fabulous resort. The beach is pristine and idyllic: clear blue water and white sands. We had beautiful villas very well equipped. the beds are so comfortable. We really appreciated the kindness of the staff there. Also, we ate in both restaurants and food is amazing. Koh rong island is perfect to relax on the beach and also to visit. Royal sands arranged for us a diving session, we also rent motorbikes to see around the villages and discover the island. We also tested the yoga class which is fabulous! I strongly recommend the class, the teacher is so good. I really recommend Royal sands for 5 star stay on Koh rong island!

Stayed in the 3 bedroom oceanfront villa. It was a jewel on the beach. Every amenity was at your disposal, wake up with the beach in sight and flour sand under your feet. Excellent staff at your beck and call. Breakfast was extremely delicious and large with great variety. The manager Lavoni was from Montenegro, was welcoming and helped arrange whatever excursion we delighted. I highly recommend a massage with Theary(Terry), it was the best massage I have ever had. The spa massage allows you to see fish while you are having your treatment. The ocean is clear and snorkeling awesome.

As once the new airport and casino are built you will lose the remote island feeling and it might be just another crowded Asian island This place is a bit like a old barcardi tv spot - I never saw sand so white and fine, the water is almost too warm and very clean The resort in contrast is so new that they have still an engineering team in putting finishing touches as well as keeping everything tip top The place is absolutely stunning and the villas are beautiful, brand new and well kitted out- cleanliness is spot on and service keen - what an achievement this is in Cambodia 2018 becomes clear once you talk to management or senior staff here or look at some of the three star resorts or restaurant in the village down the beach- it is a different universes To be clear prices

Koh Rong is a beautiful island that is just developing. There are several resorts but most are pretty basic. Royal Sands is the exception. It is not cheap but worth every dollar. The bungalows are luxurious and well designed with a private pool for most, two very nice restaurants and probably the most beautiful beach in south east Asia that is as long as it lasts very quiet. Food is excellent however a bit pricey. For European and American guests probably normal prices but not if you live in Asia. In any case we will be back.

We were given the royal treatment during our stay at The Royal Sands Resort on Koh Rong. From the fabulous beach front villa to the thirst quenching cuisine and the undeniably hosts of professional workers such as Phearon Sok who blessed us with a universe of customer service and filled our hearts with loving memories. I recommend The Royal Sands for those who enjoy secluded white powdery sands surrounded by glittery ocean waters and countless celebratory comfort.

After a week Touring Angor Wat we decided to stay at Royal Sands to relax in the sun. It was more amazing than I could imagine. This beautiful resort is only a few month old and they seem to have gotten everything right The location removed from local island populations. Thus the resort has the feeling of being isolated. If you want to visit the village it is either an hour walk or a short bike ride down the beach We loved that when you get a massage and lay on the table you look down into a Koi pond. They actually have a plexiglass glass floor!!! The 90 minute massage at the spa was so relaxing that my husband checked his watch to be sure it is was 90 minutes not 10 minutes!!!! The restaurant food is very good and the accommodations are luxurious. Finally, We have

We have been to the royal sands for 2 days with family and enjoyed it very much. The location and the surrounding is just breathtaking. Probably one of the most beautiful beach in southeast Asia. The service was very friendly, even though the resort just open they put their best effort to assist our requests. The food was very good, the rooms very confortable. We even got lost in the majestic 2.3 meters wide bed!!! We did kayak on the sunset which brings you to see the resort from a different point of view. Thanks for the experience. We will definitely return in a near future as our kids are asking fo go back every time ;)

We spent four night on this island which was where US and French Survivor were filmed. The staff were really lovely - we especially loved Chef Chau! The food was great. The villas were really nicely designed and beautifully built. The resort is still partially complete and should be really lovely once it’s totally finished and the landscaping has been completed. Massages at the day spa were fantastic as was the mountain biking trip we did up the island. The beach really has sand that is white and the water really is aqua!

Dear Sasha Thank you for your very kind words and for taking the time to share your experience with us. We believe hospitality is personal and the staff an integral part to deliver that experience to our amazing guest. We are on the final stretch of putting the finishing touches to a section of the resort and definitely agree that the resort would be lovely once completed with the turquoise blue sea and the white sand beach at our doorstep. We have passed over your compliments to Chef Chau and the Spa Manager and the team is looking forward to having you back with us.

Hi Of cause the prices at the restaurant is more expensive than the local restaurants. For example, we payed for 3 adults inclusive a bottle of wine €100,-. At the local restaurants we paid $35,- but the Tuktuk is $30,- to the next small village. The Tuktuk at Koh Rong are much more expensive than Phom Penh or Siem Reap. If you want to have a Menü from the hotel. Just write them. I’m sure they will sent you a very friendly fast answer.

We didn’t witness anybody snorkelling directly from the Royal Sands beach - but there are snorkelling sites nearby. Snorkelling boat trips are available from the Royal Sands activity centre - we took a half-day boat trip from the activity centre and landed at 3 or 4 beaches - excellent - just the 2 of us on a good quality boat with guide and boat “captain” (and refreshments) about USD180 - worth every cent. The guide offered to load snorkelling equipment at no additional costs but we declined. If you have good equipment which you are familiar with - maybe take it.

There are 4 villages on the island. The closed one is called Sok San, where you can find some shops and restaurants. It is 5km from the Resort by walk on the beach or you can take a bicycle or motorbike. There are also some other places to explore on and around the island.
