The Hellenic Film Society will be streaming the film “Cliffs of Freedom” for free until March 28 to honor 200 years of Greek independence.

In addition to the recently-deceased acting legend Christopher Plummer, the film stars an incredible cast including Simon Kassianides, Billy Zane, and Costas Mandylor.

The Story of “Cliffs of Freedom”

Cliffs of Freedom takes place during the Greek War of Independence, and follows a star-crossed romance between a Greek villager woman and an Ottoman colonel.

Set against the backdrop of the revolution, their romance causes ripple effects throughout not only their families, but also the community around them.

Many Greeks also worked behind the scenes on the movie, including Marianne Metropoulos who co-wrote the script, and George Kallis, who composed the musical score. Metropoulos’ co-writer, Van Ling, also directed the movie.

Although Greek Independence is celebrated every year on March 25, 2021 is an especially important year for the Independence Day celebration. As Greece declared its revolution in 1821, this year marks the 200th anniversary of Greek freedom.

Christopher Plummer on his love for Greece

Christopher Plummer, one of the film’s stars and a lifelong Philhellene, spoke about his love of Greece to Greek Reporter on several occasions. He also spoke about his experiences filming and acting in Greece for several productions, including in “Oedipus the King.”

Those who want to see the movie before March 28 can check out the film on the Hellenic Film Society’s site.

Marianne Metropoulos, the script co-writer, also wrote the book that Cliffs of Freedom is based on, titled “Daughter of Destiny.” The movie was released in 2019 to generally positive reviews from audiences and critics alike.

Besides the featured Greek cast, other main actors include Tania Raymonde, Reza Jaffrey, and famed screen and Broadway actress Patti LuPone.
