Carnegie Hall’s Opening Night Gala
The Philadelphia Orchestra

Wednesday, October 6, 2021 7 PM Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage
Yannick Nézet-Séguin by Hans van der Woerd, Yuja Wang by Julia Wesely.
Welcome the joyous return of live performances with Carnegie Hall’s Opening Night Gala. The Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin launches our exciting season with a performance that includes Shostakovich’s rousing Piano Concerto No. 2—featuring superstar pianist Yuja Wang—and Beethoven’s iconic Symphony No. 5. Beethoven’s love of nature inspired Iman Habibi’s Jeder Baum spricht, a powerful reflection on climate change, while Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout honors frontline workers and the human spirit’s resilience in the time of the pandemic. The evening is completed by the ever-popular Overture to Bernstein’s Candide. Celebrate the return of the music you love where it sounds best: Carnegie Hall.

After 572 days without in-person performances, Carnegie Hall was thrilled to welcome audiences back at our Opening Night Gala on October 6, 2021. While the live stream of the concert has expired, we hope you enjoy this special film that was shown at the celebratory gala dinner.
