Celebrating the Jubilee of the 70th anniversary of our monastery
A group of Polish Discalced Carmelite friars (Barefoot Carmelites) who, after the turmoils of World War II, found themselves in the US, set out to found a new monastery. Exactly on December 29, 1949, upon securing a permission from Bishop John Noll to open a private chapel (the beginnings of the future monastery), they celebrated their first mass in the house purchased for this purpose in Hammond.
Shortly afterwards, on January 17, 1950, we received a decree from the Holy See approving the foundation of the Polish monastery of the Discalced Carmelites. In 1952, the monastery was eventually relocated to Munster.
To us this is a very special occasion for thankfulness that we would like to celebrate with all of you throughout 2020.

Our Shrine
The beauty of Mount Carmel and the spiritual traditions of this place are the reasons why in the thirteenth century our religious family is born in the Church. Surrounding peace and solitude, meditation on the Word of God and work are the values uniting the hermits of Carmel around Mary, their sister and mother. In the sixteenth century thanks to the efforts of Saint Teresa of Jesus and Saint John of the Cross, we focus on new aspects and a special tasks related to the teaching of prayer. Today we do it in various ways through: retreats, days of recollection, catechesis, scientific and publishing activities, running retreat homes, parishes and sanctuaries as well as missionary work.
In all of this, however, we are called above all to prayer which is life, and to teaching life to be a prayer!
