Liechtenstein Castle, near Mdling

The original family seat of the princes of Liechtenstein was a ruined medieval fortress near Mdling. It was reactivated in 1808, when it was redesigned in the Romantic manner. Large sections of the original building appear to have been intact, and it was not until after 1873 then it was completed when a second floor and a main tower were added.

Both a conservation measure and a restoration, the castle at Mdling showed how far the Romantic castles of the second half of the 19th century had come from the artificial ruins popular in the second half of the 18th century, which had emphasized an intimacy with nature.
