The #28 car is set to return to the NASCAR Cup Series for this month’s race at Talladega Superspeedway in a few weeks with Joey Gase behind the wheel.

Not since 2009, when Travis Kvapil competed in four races for Yates Racing, has the famed number 28 appeared in a NASCAR Cup Series race.

From 1949 to 2009, drivers of the #28 car competed in 1,036 races and secured 76 victories at NASCAR’s top level of competition.

Several of the sport’s legends competed with the number 28 on their cars, most notably Davey Allison. Allison competed in 183 races behind the wheel, more than anybody else, and won 19 races, second only to Fred Lorenzen’s 25 wins in 125 starts.

Other notable drivers of the #28 car include but are not limited to Ricky Rudd, Ernie Irvan, Cale Yarborough, Buddy Baker, Bobby Allison and Dale Jarrett.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

Now the number 28 is set to be back on the race track in a Cup Series event later this month at Talladega Superspeedway.

Rick Ware Racing are set to rebrand one of their cars using the number 28, and Joey Gase is set to pilot the car in the 188-lap GEICO 500 at the four-turn, 2.66-mile (4.281-kilometer) high-banked oval in Lincoln, Alabama on Sunday, April 25. This car is meant to honor the late Davey Allison, who was killed in a helicopter crash at the track 28 years ago this July. It is designed after Allison’s iconic #28 Texaco Havoline Ford.

Allison was an organ donor, and this scheme is set to promote that initiative. Gase himself is a huge advocate for organ donation. His mother’s organs and tissue aided 66 people after she passed away in 2011 as a result of a brain aneurysm. He received the blessing of Davey’s widow, Liz, to run this scheme and honor her late husband.

Gase is also set to run this paint scheme in the Xfinity Series race, the Ag-Pro 300, at the track the day before the Cup Series race.
