My husband and I will be coming to Germany in June for the first time. I'm trying to come up with an itinerary and need to choose between stopping in Ulm to tour the Minster and Fishermen’s and Tanners’ Quarter after touring Hohenzollern and Lichtenstein Castles or skipping Ulm and arriving in Rothenburg early enough to tour the Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum before it closes at 6 pm. Both sound interesting. Which would you choose? We'll spend the night in Rothenburg regardless. Are shops open after 6 pm? If my husband is 6' 4" tall, is he too tall to walk the town walls without hunching over? How else should we spend the evening? My daughter and her husband tried to go on the Night Watchman's tour and ended up leaving after a few minutes because the crowd was so large they couldn't hear anything. Thanks for your advice.

You want to tour Hohenzollern and Lichtenstein castle, Ulm, and drive up to Rothenburg on the same day?

Personally, I would visit the church in Ulm given those choices. You can always visit that museum the next day..

Personally, I would visit the Marbach state stables which are Germany's oldest state stables being over 500 years old and you can visit the magnificent stallions up close in the stalls and the mares and colts will be out in the fields. Then go further down the idyllic Grosse Lauter River valley which has one of Germany's highest concentrations of castle ruins, most visitable. Then a visit to the magnificent Baroque abbey church at Zwiefalten. ..These are described in https://www.badurach-tourismus.de/en/Experience/Activities/Excursion-destinations/Grosse-Lauter-Valley-and-the-Zwiefalter-Aach . If you have any time left, go along the Danube River and there will be some other nice monasteries such as Obermarchtal and Mochental Palace. This will keep you also out of cities (Ulm) with interesting sights and excellent scenery.

Diana-

Yes, I'm trying to see all of the above on the same day. The next morning we'll be gone to Wurzburg by the time the Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum is open.

I was just in Ulm and had 2 lovely hours (with German friends) on a rooftop terrace just across from the Dom. So if you go, take a break and enjoy the view. Not expensive.

I’d slow down some.

I would do the museum in Rothenburg.

I am 6’2” and walked the wall 10 days ago. I don’t remember feeling too tall and I don’t think a couple more inches would make it so.

I’d skip the crime and punishment museum. It was interesting, but not worth staying an extra day (that’s what I did, because it was closed my first day.)

I don’t remember the shops being open particularly late, but other than KW, it’s not really a “shopping” town. A lot of tourist dreck you will see elsewhere in Germany. The main fun is the night watch tour and walking around.
