LAKE MICHIGAN CREDIT UNION - 10 Reviews - Banks & Credit Unions - Grand Rapids, MI - Phone Number
A mortgage is a big decision. Big like 3,500 square feet. Big like 15-30 years of your life. We lend at lower rates, make the financing process clear and simple, and back our mortgages with exceptional member service.…
I have received auto loans from LMCU, as well as having an account, and generally use the Wyoming (44th street) "branch" location; and it has always been a pleasure. Bryant E in particular has worked specifically on two of my loans/applications and has always been accurate, knowledgeable, expediate, and generally a great guy to deal with! In fact all of the Wyoming location folk are pretty cool - and the rates are generally much better than what my bank (BofA) will get me. A+ to them.
My only quarrel with LMCU on-the-whole is that they do not have locations in California (which I frequent) and therefore I have to bank with a monster such as BofA; however, in my home area, there are plenty of locations and ATMs. A-
The absolute worst mortgage refinance experience. I have a credit score of 830 and experienced delay after delay with the underwriting dept. I wasn't looking for a miracle, I just wanted a lower payment. Regardless the end terms ended up being different than what was originally discussed so I decided to terminate the deal. I congratulated LMCU for losing 50k in interest and all my future business. Withdrew my 15k out of checking and closed my account. I've never seen anything like it.
Really one of the most challenging and antiquated companies to try and do business with. My wife and I have been trying to complete the renovation loan process since July. It's now December and we're still 30 + days out, and on our 3rd appraisal. This is with both of us having 780+ credit scores, and providing all requested document in a timely manor. Strongly suggest you explore other options before proceeding down the path of an LMCU loan.
Good luck, and may your experience for this process be better than ours. Happy holidays
I opened an HSA with LakeMichiganCreditUnion. The trouble started when I tried to add a beneficiary to my account, a change which, in my case, apparently required multiple forms and additional documentation. As they received each item--sent either by mail or via their cumbersome encrypted email system, because I live in California--they would ask for another. At some point, they began requesting forms or documents I had already sent. When I tried to point this out, even providing the name of the representative who had acknowledged receipt of an item, they insisted that item had not been received. After a month or so of this, I gave up and decided to close my account.
I talked to no less than 3 different representatives about the account closure process and heard slightly different versions from each. Taking into account all versions, I completed and submitted the required forms exactly as instructed, even including a cover letter reiterating the process as it was explained to me and repeating the instructions I had specified in the forms. I received a call from yet another representative explaining that the account could not be closed as requested and describing yet a fourth version of the process.
Finally, a few days after the account was closed, I tried to access it to download my final statement and found it was locked, leaving me without access to a record of the last month of transactions against the account. I called and argued at length with a representative before she finally agreed to send me a transaction history.
LMCU seems disorganized and their representatives poorly trained. Maybe not the best institution to trust with your money.
The Credit Unions has the lowest rate Credit Card that I have seen and offers the highest rate (3%) on Checking Account. But all this comes at the cost of several cons. Then Again the CreditUnion is all about Savings and Credit Card..
Pros ********************************** MAX Checking Account gives you 3% on First $15k in your account (of course subject to 4 conditions)
The Lowest APR that I have seen for a Credit Card
Mobile Banking App is Top Class
Cons *********************************** Account Opening Process is complicated. Requires interacting with a Rep Multiple Times
Really antiquated Online Banking (No Electronic Transfers outside of Bank)
Hold Period on Checks deposited through Mobile Banking too high
Bill Pay isn't free
The MORE program is totally confusing
Does not Offer Shared Branching and FREE COOP ATMs. to withdraw money when you need.
High ATM charges for using ATMs outside of LMCU's own tiny Network.. Effectively you have to request cash back at Grocery Stores
Good To Have ************************************** Pre-approve (and offer) New Members for Credit Cards / Line of Credit etc. at the time of account opening
For those who need, make the first order of checks Free
For Checks deposited through Mobile make at least the first $1000 available instantly
Beware of this crooked company. One month after opening my HSA account with them they slashed the interest rate in half from 2% to 1%. Then when I transferred my HSA funds to a better provider, they charged my account $35. Then for good measure they took out another $5 from my savings account with them. Sorry I even considered these crooks.
LMCU has provided excellent customer service to me. They alerted me to fraud on my debit account and refunded all the charges promptly. They have also forgiven multiple fees after a quick phone call. I would recommend this bank to anyone.
Leased a car from LMCU. I was never late for payment in three years. Never. At end of lease they charged $350 disposition fee to terminate (I expected that) BUT they also charged me for a tire ($165) even though I was turning in the lease car with 6000 under miles on it (not over, UNDER) ... I called and spoke to a leasing rep who roboticly repeated the same 3 or 4 sentences. I said "I understand that but ... " and then the robot CSR repeated the same thing over and over again. Poor customer service. I hate customer service robots who can't provide answers. They also tried to apply my last payment (after lease) to an extended month, rather than a pay off. Buyer beware.
