      Season 3 – Broadchurch

2017 Crime Drama Mystery & Thriller List
98% 43 Reviews Tomatometer 90% 500+ Ratings Audience Score When the corpse of an 11-year-old British boy, Danny Latimer, is found bloodied and dirty on an idyllic beach, a small Dorset community becomes the focus of a police investigation and media madness. Out-of-town Detective Inspector Alec Hardy gets the point position over Detective Sgt. Ellie Miller -- who feels the job should have been hers. Now she must engage in an efficient working relationship with taciturn Hardy. Slowly, more members of the community of Broadchurch are drawn into the investigation, with a telephone engineer drawing great attention when he admits to a special connection to the case. While dealing with so much unwelcome attention, Danny's family tries to cope with its grief. When a suspect is named and charged, the ensuing trial sees the defendant promising to expose more of the townspeople's secrets. James Jackson Times (UK) Broadchurch still succeeds in using its mystery as way of delving into deeper emotions. Rated: 4/5 Jan 3, 2018 Full Review Tom Philip New York Magazine/Vulture For fans of the show's procedural elements, this is a good ending, and as "satisfying" a culprit reveal as could be. Still, in its final bow, Broadchurch jettisoned a lot of what made it so special, and that can only be seen as a missed opportunity. Rated: 2/5 Dec 29, 2017 Full Review Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) ... was wonderfully good, then appallingly bad, and now looks as if it might, tentatively, be good again. Dec 29, 2017 Full Review Keith Watson Metro Newspaper (UK) The message about sex cheapened and emotions stunted by internet porn felt more sociology lecture than prime-time drama. But at least Broadchurch kept you hanging on by your fingertips. Rated: 4/5 May 20, 2019 Full Review Daisy Wyatt iNews.co.uk Broadchurch is back on fine form, finally. After an implausible second series that struggled to deliver sensitive storylines with subtlety, Chris Chibnall's popular drama has returned to its best. Jan 25, 2019 Full Review Alison Rowat The Herald (Scotland) The show gave the genre a much-needed injection of British understatement, stoicism and bleak humour, raising the bar for everything that dared to follow. Jockecoca B Is this a joke? Has the writers no attachment to the real world? How is it possible NO one on set is aware that porn is available online for free, they talk about porn like its the end of the world and its hard to find so ppl have to trade it in secret.. thats just.. i don't know if the word stupid is harsh enough to describe how dumb it is... Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/15/24 Full Review Andre C Such a disappointment compared to the excellent Seasons 1&2. Far less engaging and the characters from those first two seasons felt more like space fillers whose scenes you wanted to be over with. Not that the main story was very compelling either. Chibnall's standard has dropped significantly here with implausible characters and storylines. Then there is the moralising which is only cringeworthy in that there is no apparent original thought to it. That is of course not to belittle the message about the abhorrence of rape. However, the obvious message pushing would have been no less embarrassing if Ellie had broken the fourth wall to deliver her opinions on the crime. This was unfortunately a foreshadowing of Chibnall's woeful tenure in the Doctor Who lead. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/05/23 Full Review Ellen J The production values, character development, and acting are all excellent. And the two leads do an exceptional job. But the never-ending parade of rotten, dysfunctional, toxic men is overwhelming and dispiriting. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/26/22 Full Review Audience Member Eventhough not as strong as the first two seasons, it's still Broadchurch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member We are back to solving. Same detectives but totally different story line and people. Is possible to watch this season on its own without really knowing the plot of the prev seasons ( there is just a few things that connect it, how Miller's life it now etc) This season was intense, good writing and acting. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A very strong third season caps off an all-around great series. Broadchurch season three plays to its strengths and introduces more new characters and another serious crime to get wrapped up in with our two captivating lead characters Ellie Miller and Alec Hardy played brilliantly by Olivia Colman and David Tennant. Broadchurch as a whole has all the ingredients of a great crime drama: compelling characters, high stakes crime, and solid writing and direction.
