Thankfully, Bring It On brought us a fresh and new perspective of teenage life in American society. However, Bring It On is not just a platform that wants to send a strong message; the movie is incredibly witty and smart in how the characters are constructed, and their inclusion in the story elevates the film massively.
Synopsis: Bring It On story is told from the perspective of the cheerleader Torrance Shipman, who is next in line to become a leader of The Toro, her cheerleading squad. Her path and chance to become a leader gets shaky when she discovers that all of the choreographies they performed in the past were stolen from other cheerleading squads by their coach, “Big Red.”
Torrance and her squad need to figure out what to do before the national championship and learn about the state of other squads outside their “safe” bubble.
Peyton Reed directed, and Jessica Bendinger wrote the movie. We know Peyton Reed works on Ant-Man and other popular comedy movies like Yes Man.
The movie received commercial and critical success, earning almost $100 million, and the critics praised the performances of Kirsten Dunst, Gabrielle Union, and Eliza Dushku. Most critics praised the movie’s storyline, and one even called it “a Citizen Kane of cheerleader movies” after giving it a negative review in 2000.
To this day, Bring It On is considered one of the best teen movies made in the 2000s and is gladly referenced today – Ariana Grande included it in her video for her 2018 hit “thank u, next.”
2. Bring It On Again (2004)
Bring It On Again was released in 2004 and is the only franchise sequel that shared the same producers as the original movie. The first movie’s cast did not return, and surprisingly, there are no canonical references to the first Bring It On.
The movie was distributed by Universal Studios Home Video, which meant that Bring It On Again will only be available on DVDs.
The director of the movie was Damon Santistefano and written by Claudia Grazioso. The cast of the movie included Anne-Judson-Yager and Bree Turner.
Synopsis: The movie follows the story of college newcomer Whittier who tries out and joins her new college cheerleading squad to relive her high school days as a head cheerleader.
As a newcomer, Whittier gets targeted by the insufferable team captain Tina and decides to go and create a new cheerleading squad on the campus with her best friend, Monica. Whittier needs to work with the misfits to qualify for the national cheerleader championship.
Bring It On again might be a technical sequel, but the movie is more of a standalone story about another girl that applies to the cheerleading squad and her journey through college life. It has nothing to do with the first movie.
3. Bring It On: All or Nothing (2006)
We got the second sequel in the Bring It On franchise two years later. Once again, the movie was released as a DVD by Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
Steve Rash took over the mantle of the movie and directed it, while Alyson Fouse was a writer. The cast was surprisingly well known at the time and featured young stars in Hayden Panettiere and Solange Knowles-Smith.
Synopsis: The movie follows the story of a senior cheerleader Britney Allen, who has it all – she is the most popular girl in her high school, and everything seems pretty great for her. However, her family falls into huge debt and needs to move to Crenshaw Heights, a multi-ethnic working-class neighborhood in east Los Angeles.
Crenshaw Heights Warriors cheerleading squad leader, Camille, doesn’t like Britney initially, but when the girl shows off her skills, Camille instantly takes her into her cheerleading squad. Now, the girls and the rest of the squad need to oppose Britney’s former high school Pacific Vista – everything is at stake.
The movie was not received very well from the critics and fans, but still complimented Panettiere’s and Knowles’s acting in the movie. Bring It On: All or Nothing was a better sequel than the previous entry on this list.
4. Bring It On: In It to Win It (2007)
Bring It On: In It to Win It came only a year after the previous installment of the Bring It On franchise. This installment is the franchise’s fourth movie, and once again, it focuses on competitive cheerleading.
Director Steve Rash and writer Alyson Fouse returned to work on the film, and the cast this time included Ashley Benson, Cassandra Scerbo, and Michael Copon.
Universal Studios Entertainment released the movie direct-to-video, and the creative decisions for the movie only have a few references to the original Bring It On.
Synopsis: The movie follows a high school senior, Carson, who arrives at the all-important “Cheer Camp Nationals” determined to lead her squad, The West High Sharks, to victory. However, they need first to beat Brooke, a chic New Yorker who leads her squad, the East High Jets, who are also in pursuit of the “Spirit Stick,” the competition’s coveted trophy.
5. Bring It On: Fight to the Finish (2009)
Bring It On franchise continued releasing movies in short periods, and in 2009 we already got Bring It On: Fight to the Finish. Universal continued releasing the movie direct-to-video, and the premise of competitive cheerleading stayed the same.
After working on three Bring It On movies, Steve Rash did not come back for the first time; Billie Woodruff took over the movie’s direction. The writer Alyson Fouse once again co-written the movie together with Elena Song.
Synopsis: This time, the story follows Catalina “Lina” Cruz, a tough and sharp-tongued Latina from East Los Angeles. She transfers to fancy Malibu high school after her mother remarries a wealthy man. Lina soon meets Avery, the snobbish and ultra-competitive all-star cheerleading captain who instantly becomes her rival. Lina now must prove her spot on her new school’s cheerleading team.
6. Bring It On: Worldwide Cheersmack (2017)
As you can see, Universal put the Bring It On franchise on a break for eight years, and in 2017 we got Bring It On: Worldwide Cheersmack. Robert Adetuyi directed the movie, and once again written by Alyson Fouse. The cast included Cristine Prosperi and Sophia Vavasseur.
Synopsis: The movie follows a cheerleading “internet celebrity,” Destiny, an arrogant and victory-obsessed cheerleader who leads her squad, The Rebels. They get the invitation to participate in the virtual battle against the rival group, The Truth, and Destiny needs to put her attitude aside and show her leadership.
Universal distributed the movie direct-to-video.
